Well, that should make a major improvement to the playing conditions at the BPA.
More significantly for the club as a whole, it’ll remove the need to train elsewhere, and allow the other users of the pitch to continue, without over-using the ground.

surely the sporting kit that is available these days would circumvent the abrasion issues associated to 3G pitches (i.e. skins other sporting brands are available)

i was on a pitch where a ref made a player (one of those skinny backs) pull up leggings until there was "clear visible skin between pulled up socks and shorts/legging bottoms" I don't know if that was his interpretation or something codifiedSo I guess shorter socks and 3/4 length leggings that went to just below knee would comply and protect

The laws of the game say Shorts, Underwear, Ankle Supports and Socks - only Ladies may wear leggings (Cotton blend tights).

A player wears a jersey, shorts and underwear, socks and boots.
- In addition, women may wear:
- Cotton blend long tights, with single inside leg seam under their shorts and socks.

Law 4 specifies that a player will wear jersey, shorts, underwear, socks and boots. Female players may also wear, among other additional things, long cotton based tights under shorts and socks (rationale is probably for cultural/religious reasons). The implication appears to be that men are not allowed full leg coverings.

One would think that with the advent of artificial playing surfaces that this may well be in the pipeline for review.
As a male player I would claim my rights are being infringed if women could wear "legging" style tights and I couldn't - thus creating a very quick knee jerk reaction of "ok but must be of matching club kit" criteria.

I have also been at a U15 girls game (in January) where a ref refused to allow play to start until 3 players removed leggings despite being offered a view of that rule (I believe it is reg 19 from memory) - hilariously one of his boots fell apart during the game and his whistle stopped working so Karma rules
What i meant was a set of long undershorts could reach just below the knee protect knees whilst still conforming to the regs as "underwear" not leggins

Pretty sure James Pritchard had some leggings type clothing on a particularly cold day a few years ago and was made to remove the clothing, which he did on the side of the pitch.

Have a look at one of the England games where a winger had large plasters on both knees and was in obvious discomfort but could not come off.

Do you know if any or all of the retained playing squad were consulted. I assume they would be and obviously the player welfare would be discussed in detail.
It seems that most clubs relish the idea of 3G or hybrid surfaces. the two grass pitches at Ealing have been transformed into quality grass pitches, now that they are not over used by the whole club. Ealing Trailfinders have invested in a fully floodlit second 3G pitch.
The 3G are used by local schools, Universities, the clubs mini`s and youth teams, three Academy age groups and occasionally the England Squad. This is in addition to Ealing Trailfinders Pro squad and the professional rugby league team , the London Bronco`s . All of these teams generate income for the Trailfinders sports club.

The discussions with players have been ongoing for over a year, and the intent to change the pitch has been part of contract negotiations. Some were extremely pro-change, some less so. It may have affected some renewal decisions.

It was on the same pitch, however I don't think his obvious discomfort was because of that (the pitch and his grazed knees) - I think it was from a tackle collision

Meanwhile, back at the BPA the tarmac layer is complete, apart from the locations of the pop-up irrigation sprays, which are expected to arrive very shortly. It all felt very peaceful down there this morning. It's still a controlled site, but much of the heavy equipment has gone, and only about half a dozen truck-loads of spoil needed to be collected and removed.
Sp, now the irrigation sprays need to be fitted, and their six locations competed and tarmacked, and then the soft top layers can start going down. Sockets need to be fitted for the goalposts, and for the various flags needed for both codes and football - apparently slots will be put in for the flags, and then the final exact sockets fitted in the slots at the precise positions to match the pitch markings, once the green top is down.
Anyway - pictures of pristine level tarmac available here...

Thanks Eel. There’s a lot spoken about AGPs, but very little detail about how they’re built, or how they work. I’ve found that making a weekly visit has been fascinating (even if just seeing a complete coat of tarmac slightly less so), and seeing the process from end to end has made me realise how big a job it is to get from a muddy grass pitch to (eventually) the artificial replacement. I’ve been particularly impressed by the precision, and attention to detail.
As it’s technically a building site during the process, access is limited, and as it’s the sort of job that most clubs only do once. I’ve considered it worth posting the updates here. Ok, the pictures are of Coventry, but the process would be much the same elsewhere - and generally invisible to the average supporter until it’s finished.
There should be another update next Monday or Tuesday. The heavy equipment used so far has gone, and now it’s jyst the top three inches to do.

Latest updates from the ground.
The six irrigation spray heads, and associated access manholes are now in place just off the pitch, and their holes are being tidied up so that they can be tarmacked and have the top layers applied. The water tank to feed them is in place. Very shiny it is too. Flag and post holes have been set into the pitch. There are a lot of them as Rugby Union, and League, and association football all have flags in different places. The main runs of fences are in place, with gates being fitted on t he Broomfield side. While I was there today, the laying of the shock absorbing layer of bonded rubber particles was started.
