Unfortunately Hawick have pulled out stating they can't turn a team out, so Gary is looking for an alternative fixture.

Not sure what the logic behind all this
Traditionally Mond only play 2 pre season games and every year the first couple of games we are slightly off the pace
Luckly these are against Blackheath and Rossyln Park away !!!

Rams travelled to Welsh Premiership side Aberavon today for their first pre season game, running out 35-28 winners in what sounds like a great back and forth game with plenty of tries and good performances from some of the new signings.

Off to Chinnor on BH Monday for what I'm sure will also be a quality match. Will be interesting to see how Chinnor are looking before their Championship bow in September.

Good having some rugby back.

Was at RP yesterday  sunshine, a few beers ,burger and some free flowing rugby
Park looked dangerous in the 1st half Leicester were a bit shell shocked .
Lions improved in the second half particularly their pack but I could not see much threat in their back division.

Jester 10.

It is strange, but thank heavens DMP did take the game option up. What a good  run out for both sides.

The usual best combination IMHO for pre-season first games is: one level up, and  the last game one level down.

I think Cambridge and Chinnor are trying to fix something up whilst other Championship clubs play in the Premiership Cup. Sometimes it's a question of needs must to give your players game time. Ironically, theirs is also the first league game!

Rabbie

Now that’s a huge and, very diverse hard pre-season campaign!!! Brutal comes to mind.

We at Sedge stopped doing such intense pre-season as yours some seasons ago. Mainly as we lost 5 very key pivotal players in one game  in a major pre-season Championship friendly. We went on to be relegated. I know big leap but was a huge factor that season.

So be careful what you wish for in pre-season.

Halliford, interesting view of the game. It was in fact 7 a piece after the first quarter and then 26-12 in Canterbury's favour at half time when both sides had used their strongest teams. Esher scored 33 unanswered points in the 2nd half as further players were used on both sides.

Newport was a late addition as it is the start of their 150th season. It is also the oldest Anglo-Welsh fixture and was a regular fixture before the advent of league rugby. Both clubs then visited on special occasion like their centenary and then our 150th. There was chat that it will become a regular preseason fixture alternating home and away.

Re-read my notes and stand corrected! Not sure Esher used their strongest team in the first half, more a pick and mix. Good afternoon for all, though.

Results for all the Nat 1 teams playing pre-season games over this last weekend, for those fans interested as the start of the season gets a bit closer.

I would say on the whole the results aren't too much of a suprise, given the different match ups. Early days of course, but Stortford, Richmond and Rotherham putting that many points on three of the stronger Nat 2 sides is impressive though.

Moseley 36 v Pontypool 19
Blackheath 40 v Barnes 19
Stortford 63 v Tonbridge J 21
Dings 36 v Bargoed 19
Esher 45 v Canterbury 26
Albion 52 v Camborne 12
Rams 35 v Aberavon 28
Richmond 52 v Dorking 7
Rosslyn Park 48 v Leicester Lions 12
Rotherham 40 v Leeds Tykes 7
Sale 75 v Macclesfield 5
Sedgley Park 36 v DMP 26

A couple of the fixtures to be played in the first round on Sep 7th that caught my eye were Rotherham v Rosslyn Park, Blackheath v Richmond and Albion v Sale. Should all be close and physical encounters!

I'm not sure how much should be read into these results.  So many player changes throughout the game, trialists etc.

Team news (courtesy of Titans Rugby for Rotherham Titans away to Guernsey Raiders (6pm) Saturday 24th August:

Rotherham Titans continue their league preparations on Saturday with a trip to the Channel Islands to take on National 2 East side Guernsey Raiders; kick-off at Footes Lane is 6pm.

Last week the South Yorkshire side began their pre-season with a fine performance against a lively Leeds outfit, who to be fair made them work hard for their 40 – 7 win.

Nevertheless, Titans impressed by scoring 6 tries as they brushed aside the cobwebs and integrated a number of new players to the squad.

The chance to have a look at more of the squad has been taken by Harvey Biljon, as a raft of changes sees just 4 starters from last week retain their place.

There’s a whole new front row of Charlie Capps, Jack Bergmanas and Andrew Foster, whilst the second row sees John Okafor make his first start of pre-season; he lines up alongside Harry Gilson-Fox who keeps his place.

The back row sees Travis Gordon retain his spot and he is joined by Harry Newborn and Callum Bustin.

Along the backline there’s a new half back combination of Max Green and Rob Povey.

Joe Mounsey starts for the first time in the centres and he is joined by last weeks starting full back Ronnie Du Randt.

The back three sees Jamie Cooke retain his spot and he will link up with Travis Gideon on the other wing and Jack Townend at full back.

Titans: 15 Jack Townend, 14 Jamie Cooke, 13 Ronnie Du Randt, 12 Joe Mounsey, 11 Travis Gideon, 10 Rob Povey, 9 Max Green, 1 Charlie Capps, 2 Jack Bergmanas, 3 Andrew Foster, 4 John Okafor, 5 Harry Gilson-Fox, 6 Travis Gordon, 7 Harry Newborn, 8 Callum Bustin.

Replacements: Loma Kivalu, Luke Cole, Rikki Stout, Curran Maguire, Ben Copley, Zak Poole, JB Bruzulier, Corben Ollivent, Lloyd Hayes, Frankie Gascoigne.

Only a friendly, but impressive win away to a championship side.

Two very good results there for Stortford and Rams. I know many people will say 'it's only a pre season game' and 'we don't read much into the scoreline', but the fact remains you have two local derbies being played out, with the teams from the lower league being the underdogs but prevailing in both.

Whatever they might say, Richie Williams and Nick Easter will be disappointed with those results, and will certainly have plenty to mull over before the Champ season begins. Well done to Stortford and Rams Clap

I can't speak for other leagues or regions, but definitely not when it comes to Rams v Chinnor and Stortford v Cambridge!

There is always a lot of pride amongst those clubs and these losses will hurt, especially given that they are competing in the league above now.

Full Time from Clifton Lane :

Rotherham Titans 41 Durham University 17.

After leading 17-5 Roth conceded 2 quick tries to make it 17-17 at half time.

Rotherham looked a different team in the second half, which is not surprising given it was a completely different team.

The scoreline did flatter Roth a little though as Durham were a very attack minded team. Having said that Roth looked a very powerful team, very strong up front but playing with much more pace in the backs too.

Pre season over. Up next Welcome to Rosslyn Park when the season proper kicks off at Clifton Lane @ 2pm Saturday 7th September.

I think the answer is Yes.

When I played (L 6,7- first and second teams) there was always a difference between a league game and anything else.

Going to watch Carmarthen Quins v a Scarlets XV today. Some of it will be feisty but it is a friendly.

Tell us more TB (I've been brought up not to click on unexplained links that say 'Facebook') Ermm

Looks like it was Lions 32 - Luctonians 17.

Either that or I've just given my mobile something akin to a sexual disease by clicking that link...

Leicester Lions match, kinda tricky following who is who in the second half as the Lions had 2 number 4's, 2 number 20's and later on 2 number 17's on the park at the same time!. A pretty good game with Luctonians showing well.
