Hartpury 0 Jersey 5 - Jersey on form.
Ealing 5 Nottingham 0 - I suspect that Ealing will bounce back at home after their first back to back losses in a long time.

Coventry 5  Bedford 0 -  Depends on who they send out.
Doncaster 5 L Scottish 0 - Nope

Richmond 1 Ampthill 4 - Richmond tend not to take this competition too seriously.
Pirates 4 Caldy 1 - What a long trip.

Hartpury 0 Jersey 5 ... This will be a very tough test for the Reds. From what I can see, Hartpury will have their 10 starting DR & loan players from the PL. However, I think that Jersey will win this from the bench. It will be tough though.
Ealing 5 Nottingham 0 ... I'm not so sure that the Archers hearts have been in this competition and this could be a big home win.

Coventry 2 Bedford 5 ... I agree with CC. Tie of the round. The surface will suit Bedford, but Cov are very good at home. This could be a very high scoring affair, but i think that the Blues might just sneak a win here.
Doncaster 5 L Scottish 0 ... Donny at home, looking to wrap the pool up. Regulation 5 pointer for me.

Richmond 0 Ampthill 5 ... It may take a bit of straw clutching, but Ampthill aren't out of semi-final contention yet and I fancy them to put a marker down in this game.
Pirates 5 Caldy 0 ... The Pirates cup juggernaut to keep rolling on. A long trip for Caldy, but I hope that you enjoy it. The Cornish are a great bunch of complete loonies...great hospitality though.

Ealing Trailfinders team to face Nottingham:

Odd team for Ealing, I suspect a lot of players recovering from niggles. Bodilly back at FB, though that isn't his natural position. Speaking of which, the Shingler at 12 experiment continues, hope this week is more successful than the last two. A strong front row, with a second row that includes a player that started at 8 a couple weeks ago. Andrew Davidson joins the team from Glaws, and immediately shows up on the bench. Hope to see his debut.

15. Max Bodilly

14. Jonah Holmes

13. Reuben Bird-Tulloch

12. Steven Shingler (C)

11. Cian Kelleher

10. Dan Lancaster

9. Jordan Burns

1. Kyle Whyte

2. Alun Walker

3. George Davis

4. Will Montgomery

5. Simon Linsell

6. Rob Farrar

7. Simon Uzokwe

8. David Douglas Bridge

Replacements

16. Kevin O'Byrne

17. Will Davis

18. Jimmy Roots

19. Andrew Davidson (Debut)

20. Ollie Newman

The results certainly highlight how pointless the Cup is. We can say that there are only 5/6 teams that can ever win the cup, Ealing, Jersey Pirates, Doncaster, Coventry, Bedford. All the others are simply resting players for the remaining league season and becoming cannon fodder for the top teams.

So why a cup competition in the first place. The logic seems to be a small league of 12 to have a bigger cut of RFU money which this year was £140k  less £40k insurance. If it had been a 14 team league then the share would have been £120k but two more home league games which would have brought in more that the £20k lost in the share out, and the games would have remained competitive. However those clubs, who rely on DR's from the Premiership would have been affected by The premiership cup and Internationals  when these players are called back.

I take your point, but surely there are only a few teams who can win the league as well - does that make it a pointless competition? Pirates have a small (in numbers) squad and are struggling a bit in the league this season as we rebuild. Therefore the cup has become quite important for us. Yesterday a few players who don't get regular starts in the league games were able to show what they can do. Having said that this competition doesn't compare to the old B and I cup, which was great fun.

That is true also but perhaps the new proposed format of 2 x 10 Premiership sides will resolve that , with the second league having entry criteria and both leagues getting good funding from the RFU. I would think the Prem 2 league would include Ealing, Doncaster, Coventry, Pirates, Jersey, Bedford, Wasps, plus one from the premiership. All clubs fully professional with no relegation unless the winner of Nat 1 (Championship) can satisfy Prem 2 criteria.

At risk of hijacking this thread, Iā€™m struggling to see why Wasps and Wuss (or whatever they will be called) would be a threat in the Championship. Unless I am mistaken, at the moment neither side has any players at all. So where will they get them from and what with? If the debt has disappeared, then the other Championship sides should call foul and they should be made to start from the bottom of the pyramid. If the debt has been cleared, then how will they be able to afford to muster squads good enough to compete at the top of the Championship?
As much as I find some Championship clubs relying on PL loan/DR players to compete annoying, I understand why they have done it and I think that this is the most competitive the division has been in years.

Sixways Rugby intend to take Stourbridgeā€™s place in National 2. They donā€™t intend to play in the Championship.
As for Wasps (who I believe will still be called Wasps) thatā€™s a good point. No idea. That said, who knows whatā€™s going on behind the scenes? Granted they wonā€™t have their biggest players but if they can field a couple of teams at Champ standard they should be okay.

With regards to the Cup- thereā€™s been some interesting results. For instance- Ealing were absolutely shocking when they came to Lady Bay. We were extremely unlucky not to get anything they were that bad. They just looked disinterested and we ran rings around them. I spoke to some of our players after the game and some seemed buoyant as we had ran them that close. If Ealing had played as badly as they did in that one game they would have got precisely nowhere.

I went down to Vallis Way yesterday knowing we would get destroyed and we duly did. The second half was much better than the first Nottingham wise though- if only because we actually got a decision our way! Easy to win when youā€™ve got 16 men playing for you! Sounds bitter- Iā€™m in no way bitter, it was absolutely expected, we tried our hardest but Ealing are just superior in every way- but that ref was shocking. Even when our fly half went down first with what looked like his knee and then went off with a nasty facial injury (which Iā€™m sure he didnā€™t inflict on himself) Ealing were given the advantage!

I have to agree with Stalwart though. Bring back the B&I! Have some great memories of B&I trips.

I am so weary of reading about what might happen next season. Will the top side go up? Will the Premiership get ring-fenced? Will Worcester play in the Championship? No they won't. Will Wasps play in the Championship? Who knows. How many teams will be promoted from National One? How many sides will compete in The Championship? Or will there be two Premiership leagues consisting of the top 20 placed teams? What funds are available for rock solid clubs like Caldy and Ampthill? It goes on and on and on. The fact that there is such confusion is a disgrace. Rant over.

The only certainty Cherub is that however badly tiers 1 & 2 are mismanaged, however many professional  (sic) clubs go to the wall, however many rugby creditors remain unpaid, however many rugby supporters have their hearts broken and however many semi-professional and amateur club volunteers are taken advantage of...

No one in the RFU hierarchy will lose their jobs, fall on their sword or even have to face honest questions...

The policy of protecting the business of the RFU (instigated by Ian Ritchie) at the cost of it's member clubs & rugby facing employees MUST end. IMO Sweetnam, Bujalski & Day and especially Borges should all be summarily sacked and lose any benefits including pensions.

The RFU is a Provident Society, not a personal fiefdom for fatcats Angry

Recognise many of your concerns Cherub, tho' in your frustration you are asking questions about next season to which the answers are known:

- Will the Prem be ring-fenced? No, not if Ealing win the Champ & their ground's passed as compliant. Update - Ealing's ground non-compliant. So closer to ring-fencing, but not actually there yet
- Will Worcester be in the Champ? No
- How many sides promoted from Nat 1? 1
- Will there be a 2 x 10-team Prem? No, not next season

Still some uncertainties - hopefully one of which (Wasps) may be answered in the week ahead

The problem with the B&I cup was that the Scottish and Welsh sides were not interested and the cost of flying to Ireland to take on the Irish districts 2nd XV proved a step too far. That was the reason the cup died.
