Word on the street is that Surrey have pulled out of the BB Cup yesterday ahead of their match with Herts. Does anyone have any insight here?

Yorkshire squad has no players from the only Nat 1 ream - Leeds Tykes, and non from Rotherham Titans

That would suggest that neither Club put forward any players for selection.

Hull Ionians are proud to provide the County Senior Mens Captain plus a number of players in both the Men's & Women's County Senior Squads.

Sadly there are very few players from Rotherham who are fit enough to play! Our team list for tomorrow shows just 18 available for the game. Much as I would love to see the lads turn out for Yorkshire, they need a rest, and our thanks for battling on through 18 consecutive games. Enough is enough.

According to Herts Website, Surrey had 11 players!....and where due to play at Home (Esher) Halliford any views?

Surrey changed coach and management during the season and tried the old-fashioned method of asking players to come along To training if they wanted to play. That generated 11 players from Level 6-8. The official line is that they are still in the BB Cup and will try to get a team out next week but nobody at Esher is interested in playing.

I am told Hertfordshire had a side drawn from Levels 2-4, so it would have been an easy win for them

Most players started pre season last July. To expect them to continue playing through May and into June  if they reach a final when the ground is like concrete and the training pitches are bare is an absolute nonsense and sadly reflects how little those on the RFU Council/committees understand about the physical toll of rugby these days. County rugby has lots of potential positives but none if bolted on at the end of an already too long season. The 15-a-side season should start in September and be done by the end of April, that way players get some kind of rest and there is a chance they may turn up for the following season. If they want a meaningful County Championship it has to be integrated into the season, but with league rugby now so dominant sadly that ship has sailed.

With all due respect, our Club has always supported the County Championship and, even after a hard season, our players are pleased to have been selected for Yorkshire.

I don't see how you can have a go at the RFU here? The County Championship  (when played) has been played at the end of the season for some years now.

You can never please everyone and there are some that you will never please at all.

I have to agree with Marigold here. The County Championship is dead in the water and has been for some time. Admittedly there are small pockets where it is supported but we need to acknowledge that it has gone from being the "stepping stone" to international rugby to a meaningless, unneccesary and largely unwanted burden at the end of a long hard season.
I can also agree with Sid in that it is not necessarily any fault of the RFU but it was certainly the move to professionalism that was the beginning of the end for a once outstanding competition

Blimey I agree with Sid.

Its clear if CBs are prepared to put the hard yards in and you know go and look at players playing for their clubs during the season and then invite them to join a squad you can turn out a team.

The issues at the moment are, some CBs see the CC as a chore whilst others can't wait to get in to it.

Then you have CBs like Gloucester who say we can't run a Men's County side or U20s because we've got less funding off the RFU.......but we'll run a Women's Squad? How inclusive of them.

County Rugby is a different kind of rugby than League Rugby and if you work at it you can get your squad to HQ for the final which for some its the pinnacle of their playing careers. Lancashire have picked players from Levels 3-5 for today's opener against Leicestershire and I'm pretty sure next week's game against Yorkshire will see a sizable crowd and a lot of committed players.

TB, wrong in so many ways - County Rugby is buzzing at the moment albeit with some CBs rolling over and letting the RFU throw the baby out with the bath water.

Like I said - there are areas where it is well supported but "buzzing" it certainly ain't!

I think it is less visceral if you are playing for East Midlands or Eastern Counties than if it is Yorkshire taking on Lancashire or Cornwall v Devon.

It remains an important part of the pathway for youth players of both sexes.

But for the men, outside those traditional rivalries, it is about as relevant as the Championship cup.

I have long felt that the County Championship should be an age-limited competition, perhaps Under 23, as well as Under 20 which would showcase younger players who are, perhaps, better able to add another 3 or 4 games to the end if a season.

The problem often lies with the CB Officers, IMHO, who want to have a show team to illustrate their success.

There was a time when playing county rugby was a pre requisite to playing for England, along came professional rugby, no first class players available and the county game seemed to lose a certain kudos. I know when I played, Leicestershire was very much at junior level with few if any players from the likes of the Tigers, a few of my team mates played for the county, but it was very much a case of old school ties to get a place in the side.

Just seen the Middlesex team for today's game with Berkshire - six players from both London Welsh and Hammersmith & Fulham, with a further four Hammers (and one from London Cornish) on the bench. Only one of the Welsh players would  be a regular 1st XV player, and the rest of the squad is selected from clubs at L7 and below.

Looking at the Kent squad it's a good spread from level 3-6 bigger clubs backing it as well as smaller clubs which I think it's how it's supposed to be. I know we at Combe a very proud to have county players and have done for years. I personally think it adds something to the end of season for players and clubs. Hope it continues yet wouldn't be surprised if it got binned

Club, county, division, possible v probably trail and then an England cap.
Touring sides played a proper tour, against the Divisions and the Universities.

County rugby is what it is. It is still an honour to play for your County.
Why do we have to look back at what it used to mean and why does it have to lead to something else?

In these days, County rugby appearances can lead to England Counties, that is when the RFU provide funding for the England Counties Squad. We have had players move on to England Counties and foreign tours and, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Hushed voice, whispering here.

Well done RFU fixture persons.
Yesterday East Midlands Men and Women played at Northampton Old Scouts against their Warwickshire counterparts.
A situation that cannot happen for every county, but as it did here, having both games same place, same day, same time is a sign of joined up thinking…or an accidental fluke.
I would like to think the former.

I would also like to think, reducing the league sizes in the mens game, that besides the optional club cup games end of season that the County championship could start mid April and the first weekend of May would be the end of group stages,

I might be trying too apply too much sense to RFU fixture planning, and apologise if that is naive.

21 players in the Cheshire 22 from the 1st and 2nd placed clubs in Nat 1, playing mainly lads from Level 4,5 and 6. Added to the fact that Cheshire play Northumberland at Home next week I would expect Cheshire have already booked their Hotel at Twickenham. RFU Comps and the Organising Committee got this one badly wrong schedule-wise

Exactly. The nature of the beast this season with caldy and sale in the top 2 in National 1. Rugby in that area is obviously strong.

Anyone who doubts the importance, credibility or relevance of County rugby should have been at the Yorkshire v Lancashire match yesterday. Two totally committed County Squads battling it out in the sunshine, in front of a large crowd at WP Leeds. The photo in The Rugby Paper says it all.
Yorkshire won 33-31 thanks to a last minute penalty score and now have max points fron their 2 games but, they have to wait on Cheshire's next result before knowing if they will progress to Twickers. Odds are against them following Cheshire's massive win against Leicestershire.

Cheshire are bound to be strong this year with an abundance of Caldy and Sale players, but they can potentially make the final having played neither Yorkshire or Lancashire (with all due respect to Leics and Northumbria) the stronger of the other counties in the North. I'm not a fan of this format

I think that counties only play 2 games rather than 3. In south Div 1, Kent are only going to play 1 since Surrey have pulled out completely apparently. So what does that mean? They get the full 5 points and a 28-0 win?

Posted By: stato
Date Posted: 15 May 2022 at 18:16
Leicestershire battled to the end yesterday, but only 5/6 of the starters could be deemed regulars at National 2. Syston from Level 5 provided a good number as well but there were 3 lads who had never played men's rugby before this campaign and a good number from Level 6 and Level 7 in there. Both Hinckley and Lions have had their squads ripped apart with injuries in the last couple of months and it wasn't far off last man standing in the county to get 22 in the match day squad, with a 39 and 44 year old in the front row and the forwards coach having to start in the second row. Cheshire deserve a lot of respect however, not just for their performance but their humility and attitude throughout the game which was extremely professional and respectful

Kent have already played their game, a 44-43 win at Hampshire, who subsequently lost 78-12 in Cornwall yesterday. I suspect Cornwall will have to win at Herts next Saturday to qualify from the South group.

I note that Warwickshire were battered again.
But then, with just one NL2 player in the squad, and the rest playing at Midlands Prem and quite a few below that, it's not too surprising.
Such a shift away from the dominant 'Coventryshire' days (with the one token Nuns player).
I sometimes wonder what the point of the competition is.

There is none, and any serious reorganization would scrap it, unless you are from Lancashire or Cornwall, when it is the most prestigious title in community rugby.

Or Cheshire.

Having said that, the County championship is a unique type of competition which has possibly had its day. Having said that, any player who represents their county do so with justifiable pride no matter what level they're at.
If we are after meaningful competition however, we might do better with a regional approach, the only issue there would be that given the way the RFU organise things, Cheshire would probably be part of the South West and Leicestershire part of the North East

Not sure if this is still the case, but I believe Kent use to limit the number of players from any single team (which I believe was two).  This obviously had the affect of spreading representation further through the league pyramid.

It's not. They seem to have got rid of it a while ago. For example A few seasons ago, Kent's 7, 8, 9 and 10 were from Tunbridge Wells. Now if you look at their teamsheet, it's mostly Blackheath, Canterbury, Tonbridge and Westcombe Park.

Agree Camquin and certainly here in E Counties there is no buy in from any of the senior clubs so we have players from Level  6 7 and 8...great for them, but does it serve any real purpose?

The Cambridge squad had been running on fumes, I am not sure how many players we used, but it was less than many years. By May, they needed a break.

Many of our players have traditionally played for East Midlands or Hertfordshire, but we usually provide the Counties with a number of players.

Sounds about right in terms of points as the only other southern side that went unbeaten too was Kent and they had a 1 point BP win over Hants and a walkover from Surrey pulling out.

Mind you if Kent had made it, it would have made a good point about how crap this new system is whereby a team can play just 1 game and get straight to Twickenham.

I think the issue is Cheshire clearly have 10 points having won both their games scoring over 50 points and with a massively superior For & Against compared to Yorkshire yet somehow the RFU site has Cheshire down as 9 points and Yorkshire in the final.

Still think the format is completely stupid. Not saying Cheshire wouldn't have beat Yorkshire or Lancashire as they've gone with 99% Caldy and Sale Fc players, but they are getting to the final by virtue of the luck of the fixtures and playing the 2 weaker teams in the group.

But as a Cheshire resident..good luck in the final!

My guess here is that when Cheshire completed the Match Card yesterday they forgot to put the number of Tries scored hence no Try BP.

RFU website has Lancashire Women 34 - 4 Northumberland Women.

They must have got 2 conversions without scoring tries.

(it was actually 34-5) Competitions Department on top form again.......

Well thank goodness no one told Cornwall that this is a useless waste of time. Hertford is chock a block with cornish folk. And all credit to them, not an easy journey.

They always travel to support their county (I guess because there's nothing else to do on a saturday down there beyond support that new club in the lesser code)

Great fun supporting Cornwall. There is always a special atmosphere. The players know what it means too. People seem to just enjoy supporting their teams down this way. I watch Plymouth Albion around the country with a group of fans and it's the passion that keeps us all going. Often think it's probably different living in London etc for people.

Nice words Carlos. Was following from afar for this one and was a bit nervous at 5-0 and 19-21. Hertfordshire have a good history in the competition.

I agree with the comments on the structure in the thread as it may have been Cornwall missed out when they had played two games but knew that was just the way the fixtures went, it could have been Cornwall with Surrey and other counties would have been able to say but Cornwall haven't played etc.

Looking forward to playing Cheshire again, an interesting match ahead after most of their players finished first or second in National 1.

Looking forward to the final ,Cornish supporters are a great bunch think its the only time some of them ever leave Cornwall is to visit Twickenham .Cheshire do have players in the squad who played at level 7 this season so should be interesting.

They have fixed the table.
But Northumberland women are still noted as scoring 4.

20 minutes gone
Cheshire 0 -14 Cornwall.

Cheshire looked to have scored from a kick through and chase, but the ball just went into touch-in-goal before the winger could ground it.

That's half-time.
There has been a YC for Cornwall, they have another five minutes to play with 14.

Somerset and Leicester won the earlier matches.

If Cornwall go on to win this it shows just what it means to them.

Cheshire made up exclusively of now Championship Caldy and 2nd place in Nat 1 Sale FC surely down as favourites

A lot has been said about the Cheshire Caldy/Sale combinations, very little said about the Cornwall chances for todays game.

Today is a proud day for "Cousin Jacks" with our ladies also winning the Gill Burns Trophy at Richmond.

Historic treble for the Black and Gold.
U20, Senior Mens and Div 3 Ladies.
Perhaps Division 1 isn't that good if a side predominately drawn from National 2 and below can defeat the best Div.1 can offer?
