Predictions:
Hartpury 1 v 5 Doncaster - I think Doncaster should start with the maximum 5 point haul.
Ampthill 1 v 4 Nottingham - really close game but I think Nottingham should win it.
Jersey 4 v 1 Coventry - a really good game in store but Jersey at home are formidable.
London Scottish 0 v 4 Newcastle - LS will be ready for this one and will make it hard but Falcons will pull through relatively comfortably in the end.
Cornish Pirates 2 v Ealing 5 - Brilliant game for round 1 but I think Ealing will edge a high scoring thriller.
Yorkshire Carnegie 1 v Bedford 5 - Blues have had a shocking start to the season but surely they can’t lose to Carnegie at present?.

Hartpury College 4 v Doncaster 1  - Close run game, home advantage
Ampthill 1 v Nottingham 5 . . . Notts normally start season well
Jersey 2 v Coventry 5 - Are Cov the real deal this year? A win here would say so . .MOTD
London Scottish 0 v Newcastle 5  - Banker
Cornish Pirates 1 v Ealing 5 - Tough , but if Ealing are serious it starts here!
Leeds 0 v Bedford 5  . . even a very poor Bedford side should have too too much for Leeds

Hartpury College 1 v Doncaster 5 Donny too strong
Ampthill  4 v Nottingham 1  Amps boosted by win against Bedford and home support
Jersey 5 v Coventry 2 Expect points, Cov are decent but Jersey to take it
London Scottish 0 v Newcastle 5  Newcastle too strong
Cornish Pirates 2 v Ealing 5 Tough one to call but Ealing mean business
Yorkshire Carnegie 0  v Bedford 5 Poor start for Blues but perfect bounce back game

Ealing will feel the pressure playing in front of a large crowd in PZ.

Hartpury 1-4 Donny This could go either way and will be hugely influenced by the loan influx from Glos/Wuss/Briz
Ampthill 2-2Nottingham  This one should be really competitive. I predict a low scoring draw although 4-1 either way probably more likely

Jersey 5-2 Coventry As its Mrs C's 65th birthday I will miss this one but hope to follow the match on Radio Jersey from a boat somewhere a bit warmer than St Ouen.

Scottish 0-5 Falcons Banker away 5 pointer which surely gives Scottish every chance of a win.

Pirates 0-5 Ealing Another Banker away win so Pirates have every chance of winning it.

Yorkshire Carnegie 4-1 Bedford Could go either way but I expect a decent crop of loan recruits to strengthen Yorkies.

Hartpury 0-5 Donny I think that the cavalry won't be available until after the World Cup, so I think that Donny wins this one handily.

Ampthill 4 -1Nottingham Ampthill come into this one with all of the momentum.

Jersey 4-1 Coventry Coventry very impressive against Ealing in wet weather last weekend, but I find it hard to bet against Jersey at home in the regular season.

Scottish 1-4 Falcons Scottish have impressed in the cup, and I like to think that they'll continue that by containing Falcons.

Pirates 4-1 Ealing I've been looking at the schedule to start the season with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach for a couple of months now. After watching Ealing fail to pick up the BP in Coventry at the same time that Pirates smashed Nottingham, I can't say that I find myself relieved.

Yorkshire Carnegie 0-5 Bedford A "get well" game for Blues.

Hartpury 4 v 1 Doncaster

Ampthill 1 v 4 Nottingham

Yorkshire Carnegie 0 v Bedford 5

Hartpury 1 v 5 Doncaster

Ampthill 4 v 2 Nottingham Hard one to call, Ampthill buoyed by their derby victory

Jersey 4 v 1 Coventry clash of the week, just calling Jersey based on home advantage

London Scottish 0 v 5 Falcons LS done well but I suspect Falcons will swoop in for the 5

Cornish Pirates 1 v Ealing 4 Ealing will be made to work very hard for their points, could go other way

Yorkshire Carnegie 0 v Bedford 5 YC managed to get points on the board this weekend but cannot see Bedford not managing to get the Win (even with their current woes)

Hartpury 0 v 5 Doncaster ... Donny way too strong for the students

Ampthill 0 v 5 Nottingham ... Real Championship life starts here. Nottingham to give a lesson in how to contro0l a game.

Jersey 4 v 1 Coventry ... The weather forecast is fantastic for this one (at the moment) and this could be a brilliant game. I have to go with my team to win a thriller and turn over last seasons last game shocker.

LS 0 v 4 Falcons ... Falcons to be professional and strangle the life out of LS.

Cornish Pirates 1 v Ealing 5 ... Trailfinders to turn up the heat, but not without a few worries on the way. Great game on paper.

Yorkshire Carnegie 0 v Bedford 5 ... Don't care who YC pick, they are in for a tanking!

Ealing Trailfinders team to play Cornish Pirates at 14:30 on Sunday 13th October at Mennaye Field in Round One of the Greene King IPA Championship: Very solid side. I prefer Sloane to Tovey, and I don't like Johnston at 15 - would prefer Bell. A bit surprised to see Willis getting the start - if he beats Pirates, that could leave a nasty taste in the mouth for them.

15 David Johnston 14 James Cordy Redden 13 Jack Tovey 12 Pat Howard 11 Reon Joseph 10 Craig Willis 9 Nathan Fowles 1 Jordan Els 2 Alun Walker 3 Craig Trenier 4 Sam Dickinson 5 James Cannon 6 Kieran Murphy 7 Jordy Reid 8 Rayn Smid ©

Replacements:

16 Matt Cornish 17 Will Davis 18 Elliot Millar Mills 19 Dave McKern 20 Andrew Durutalo 21 Jordan Burns 22 Tommy Bell 23 Steven Shingler

I will admit that I'm curious about injury status on a lot of players. The following folks who I had expected to see on the field all seem to be MIA: Lewis Jones, Peter Lydon, Alex Lundberg, Paul Grant, and Seb Stegmann. Maybe they are just getting beat out, but I would have expected to see SOMETHING of them.

I am likewise surprised not to see Tommy Bell starting at 15 - especially as it might be a bit wet and windy.

An update on the injury status of the MIA players would also be useful for us supporters.

Wow! Well done LS. A force to be reckoned with this season I think.
Just back from St. Peter where Jersey did their best to gift Coventry a win but managed to eventually secure a bonus point win 22-15 despite 3 yellow cards to none.
Really poor discipline from the Reds, but magnificent defense. In truth Coventry never looked like scoring from open play and Jersey were worthy winners.... but only just. I think that Cov will play a lot better than they did today, but their 10 was superb.
A special mention to the forwards for Jerseys 2nd try as their efforts in defense from an attacking position 5 mtrs out pushed Coventry outside the 22 before forcing a dropped ball which was kicked the length of the field for the Jersey backs to finish off. A real example of turning defense into attack.

Agree  with that assessment and both teams will play better as the season progresses but really gritty win from Jersey.  Fantastic defence from Jersey gave them the platform to get the win and Jersey's discipline will improve. Expecting Cov to be up there at the end of the season, they will be better but some really smart tactical work today to keep them in the game.  Great game to watch, well done both teams.

Ampthill 20 Nottingham 44, https://www.ampthillrufc.com/1stxv-20-nottingham-44/" rel="nofollow - match report here , Nottingham well worth the win

Amps discipline dire, 4 yellow cards, 2 for 1 player meaning more than 45 minutes played a man down.

The home side might feel aggrieved that so many decisions went against them but gifting 20 points (2 converted tries and 2 silly penalties) isn't going to help. Nottingham were much more street smart, hopefully the lessons will be learnt.

well Donny won ugly, too many players out of position in my opinion although the lads who played out of position did well enough. Hartpury, were up for the challenge, their number 8 was on fire (red head as well). We will take the 4 points willingly, and sit above Falcons on the table (great work LS), one suspended key player back next week, a few more injured players hopefully returning soon.

Rory Pitman came off injured yesterday, I hope it was precautionary and nothing serious.

Massive win for Pirates in the opening round of the season. Pirates kept their foot on the gas the full 80 minutes and never really looked like taking it off. The Pirates defence was absolutely relentless and Ealing simply couldn't find a way through, apart from one extremely soft try by Jordan Burns after a lapse in concentration. What a start to the season though. Well chuffed to have slain the giant in that fashion, with a bonus point no less.

Pirates well worth the win. Came out of the blocks fast and got themselves in front. Ealing had a lot of possession and territory in the second half, but the Pirates defence was superb, then when we finally got into Ealing territory we got the BP try.
Happy days.

Well done Pirates, sounds like a well deserved victory. A successful Championship needs to be more than just a two horse race, I just hope they can repeat the feat when the Falcons fly into town!

We'll give it a good go.

So Scottish beat Pirates, who beat Ealing and restricted Falcons to a 4 point win. Must be Scottish to be challenging Falcons for the top spot -

Especially as Ealing play Newcastle on the 21st! Given the hot water I'm in with the wife for moving our flights abroad at Christmas to let me catch the game, it better still be relevant!

Great first match at the Mennaye yesterday on the newly laid pitch and in unseasonal warm weather.
In truth the margin could have been wider as three Pirates placekicks hit the post.
Ealing seemed a bit devoid of ideas when it became clear that the one-outpower game wasn’t working. The half time replacements made a difference and they enjoyed much more possession in the second half, with only a very well taken individual try to show for it.
Bit disappointing to hear James Lowes’ expletive riddled rant at home supporters late in the first half.

Lowes did nothing but moan, whinge and rant at all and sundry for the whole game. Nothing wrong with a bit of passion, but he was out of order. Hope he enjoyed the long trip home.

Who is James Lowe? Is he the NZ player?

No - he's the unsuccessful Yorkshire Carnegie coach who Ealing brought in for some reason. He isn't even listed as the Head Coach - slightly unclear what his role is to me, but I'm embarrassed to hear that he didn't comport himself well.

Ealing has had massive trouble finishing at the try line for some time now. Per my analysis of the Ampthill game, most of their tries were coming from open play, but when they were near the line they couldn't find their way through the majority of the time. I don't know what the answer is, but it isn't to just keep canonballing into the defense. That just leads to Jordy Reid coughing up the ball.

Good for us but bad move by Ealing not to start Burns for this game, He ran the show at the Mennaye last season and scored three tries. His try yesterday was the best move by Ealing the whole game but by then  Pirates were  all but home and dry.

Googled James Lowes. Spent most of his career in Rugby League playing at Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls. Very little on his CV involving his experience in Rugby Union. Perhaps that explains his Frustration/Rants on Sunday. Ealings DOR Ben Ward gave a good summary of the game on their website.

From the twitter feed on the match it looks like a couple of sloppy restarts gifted the Pirates scrums in the centre of the pitch from which they scored tries on both occasions. Not to take away anything from what was very much a top class performance by the Pirates!

Newcastle did not renew Evan’s contract following his short term deal, so he was a free agent.
