Ridiculous - and I thought Twickenham tickets were overpriced.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/67436621" rel="nofollow - Antoine Dupont: France captain willing to make 'sacrifices' to fulfil Paris Olympics dream

Quote
France captain Antoine Dupont has vowed to make "sacrifices" in pursuit of his dream of playing at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Dupont, 27, captained France in a home World Cup quarter-final defeat in the XVs game in October, but will focus on the World Rugby Sevens Series in 2024.

He won the 2022 Six Nations Grand Slam but is set to miss next year's edition to prepare for the Olympics.

"Competing for an Olympic medal is really motivating," Dupont told Canal+.

Speaking after being named the Top 14's player of the season he added: "It's been a while that discussions have been under way for me to be made available for this [Olympic] team.

"We'll have to adjust things. I won't be able to play all the matches every weekend until the end of the season. Sacrifices will have to be made to be able to spend time with the team."

The scrum-half, named player of the Six Nations in 2020, 2022 and 2023, told French media last year he has a "desire" to participate at the Olympics.

The Toulouse player will join the sevens squad in January before tournaments in Canada and Los Angeles.

Danny Care should have rephrased that and said Dupont makes the perfect rugby player, 7s and 15s.

There is a debate as to whether rugby, along with a lot of other sports, is really an Olympic Sport, but nevertheless, I don't blame Dupont wanting a shot at competing in a home Olympic Games. Probably a good time to do it with the most recent RWC cycle finished as well.

It might also give others teams a chance in the 2024 6N, such is Dupont's quality. I see him as the Lionel Messi of the rugby world - and I'm sure he will win a world cup eventually like Messi did.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/68336695" rel="nofollow - Antoine Dupont: France star set for rugby sevens debut as Olympic dream begins

Quote
Antoine Dupont is set to make his eagerly anticipated sevens debut on Friday after being named in France's squad for the Vancouver SVNS event.

Rugby union's star player has left behind the Six Nations in a bid to win a medal at his home Olympic Games in Paris this summer.

The 27-year-old scrum-half is not the first to attempt the switch from XVs to sevens.

In 2016, three stars of XVs rugby - Sonny Bill Williams, Quade Cooper and Bryan Habana - embarked on Mission: Olympic Sevens.

Australia star Cooper and South Africa winger Habana were not even selected by their countries, while Williams' campaign ended in misery when he was injured in New Zealand's first match in Rio.

So why can it be difficult to make the switch and how might Dupont succeed where others have failed?

Fitness and speed of play

Played on a full-size pitch, a game of sevens lasts 14 minutes and includes the shortest of breaks for half-time. Unlike XVs there are few stoppages in play. The pace is relentless.

Former Saracens centre and USA international Chris Wyles had to make a rapid readjustment before he played at the Rio Olympics.

While his club team-mates celebrated a European and Premiership double, Wyles spent the next few weeks getting fit for sevens. It meant running - lots of running.

"I am not going to lie, it was a tough two, three months coming from XVs without any summer tournaments," Wyles told BBC Sport.

"Not the technical side of things, it is definitely just the fitness - the speed of play and the amount of metres ran in training."

Dupont opting out of the Six Nations demonstrates the Frenchman's desire to make the 12-man Olympic squad.

"It shows how seriously he is taking it. More than that, it is a sign for the players in the squad currently that he is sacrificing things to try and make this squad," Wyles said.

"In order to promote the right culture in the team he is deciding to sacrifice quite a bit, which is a bold decision."

'Dupont's high rugby IQ' will help him adapt

With only three forwards on the pitch and wide-open spaces to attack, the three-time Six Nations player of the championship must learn a different style of rugby.

"The challenge with sevens is that you have to be able to do it all," former England and Great Britain sevens captain Tom Mitchell told BBC Sport.

"Everyone has to hit rucks and everyone has to be able to defend one-on-one in quite a lot of space. For me, those are the bigger challenges.

"Dupont is one of the most well-rounded players in his position with his ability to be strong in the contact area and with some of his tackling."

Scrum-half is Dupont's logical sevens position, but Mitchell says the hosts could play him at hooker to get "another ball-player on the park".

His "special ability" to use his body in the contact area and his talent to see space and execute at a high tempo makes him a scary sevens prospect.

"He is probably going to go better than any other convert that we have ever seen before," the silver medallist at the Rio Olympics added.

"Someone like Dupont, who has a high rugby IQ, will not struggle to pick it up but there are different scenarios that he will encounter on a sevens field that he won't in XVs."

That's amazing - if you'd asked a bookie for odds 4 months ago on these 4 being the SF teams for any world series event this year, they'd have been long I imagine?

See these games are watchable online via Rugby Pass TV at 10.08pm and 10.30pm respectively tonight. The bad news for anyone wanting to stay up for the final is that it's at 2.23am! Confused

Did anyone stay up? 'Fraid I didn't. Narrow SF wins for France & GB by 2 & 3pts respectively, French win 21-0 in final for their first 7s title since 2005, fair to say the Dupont film-script is back on track, for now...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/articles/cgee7zvww04o" rel="nofollow - GB men bid to secure last sevens place at Olympics

Quote
Great Britain Sevens men's squad have to win the repechage tournament starting in Monaco on Friday to secure the final place at the Olympic Games.

The event, which finishes on Sunday, is the last chance to qualify for Paris 2024 and only one of the 12 teams competing will make it to France.

Great Britain, who won a silver medal at Rio 2016, finished ninth during the 2022-23 World Rugby Sevens Series to miss out on the top four automatic qualifying spots.

Ireland then defeated GB in the final of the 2023 European Games to gain a spot through regional qualifying, leaving Monaco as the last opportunity to qualify.

Hosts France, New Zealand, Argentina, Fiji, Australia, Uruguay, Ireland, United States, Kenya, Samoa and Japan have all qualified for the men's competition in Paris, with the GB women's team also set to compete.

Who are GB competing against?

Pool A: South Africa, Chile, Tonga, Mexico.

Pool B: Great Britain, Canada, Uganda, China.

Pool C: Spain, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Brazil.

GB start their campaign against China (14:28 BST) on Friday before playing Uganda (11:28) and main Pool B rivals Canada (16:32) on Saturday.

The Canadians came within one game of the Paris Olympics but were defeated by the United States 24-14 in their regional qualifying.

South Africa, who won bronze at Rio 2016, lost to Kenya in their regional qualifying event and pose the biggest threat to Great Britain.

Spain, who qualified for Rio through the repechage, reached the semi-finals of the European Games before being defeated 19-7 by GB and will fancy their chances of qualifying for another Olympics.

The top two from each pool and the two best third-placed teams will go through to the quarter-finals.

Seeding for the quarter-finals is from a combined pool standings, meaning GB will want to maximise their points scored in every pool match to avoid South Africa in an early knockout round.

GB repechage squad: Kaleem Barreto, Ross McCann, Harry Glover, Morgan Williams, Robbie Fergusson (capt), Ethan Waddleton, Will Homer, Max McFarland, Jamie Barden, Charlton Kerr, Tom Emery, Alex Davis.

Semi-finals:

2:30pm South Africa vs France
3:00pm Fiji vs Australia

6:00pm Bronze Medal Match
6:45pm Gold Medal Match

Ireland maintained their tournament consistency - losing at the quarter-final stage - whilst the Bok seem to be peaking at the right time having suffered close loses in their pool matches against Ireland and New Zealand.  Not bad for a team that only qualified last month.

I was interested to see that one of the stand out players in the French team, Aaron Grandidier, was born and educated in England. He played for Kent U18s and OEs, but now plays for Pau.

Perfectly set up: France v Fiji for gold. Hopefully live on BBC, who only showed the SFs on delay on Beeb 1.

Bronze Medal Match @ 6:00pm - South Africa vs Australia

Gold Medal Match @ 6:45pm - France vs Fiji

For a neutral possibly the dream gold medal match - the hosts against the defending Olympic champions.  Hopefully it will be an absolute cracker of a final.

I believe that the Beeb said that the bronze medal match would be shown live on BBC2 and the gold medal match live on BBC1.

Congratulations France! ClapClapClap  Undoubtedly the dream start to the Olympics that the organisers were hoping for.

Commiserations Fiji.  Hugely entertaining but with such a partisan crowd backing the opposition it was probably a challenge too far.

Anyway, tomorrow GB Women take to the pitch in search of gold*.

Sunday
2:30pm Ireland vs GB
6:30pm Australia vs GB

Monday
1:00pm GB vs South Africa
Quarter-finals from 8:00pm

Tuesday
Placement matches, semi-finals and medal matches from 1:30pm

(*other medals (of lesser value/stature) are available)

Being the Olympics in particular it's a pity the media didn't seem to realise the French team had more than one man.

It's always the way.

I'm sure there are other gymnasts than Simone Biles but she is the star.

Indeed Paul. I don't have a problem with Biles though (I'm sure she will be pleased!) because she is at least an Olympic champion who deserves the spotlight at the Olympics.

My (old fashioned I know) objection is to the millionaire "drop ins" who fancy turning up at the Olympics to pick up a medal and then generally depart the day after rather than stay and support their team mates in their events.

Have to say, I'm not that optimistic about a GB medal after seeing us get played off the park by the Aussies yesterday - different levels. Mind you, France looked pretty average on day 1 of men's event, so as long as you make the QFs, anything's possible...

If they can beat South Africa, they could well end up second in the pool.
That should earn a QF against the USA.
Anything is possible.
Either way, they have outperformed the men.
