A nice slow build-up to this year's tournament.

Exeter's in-form winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso looks set to choose England over Wales in a boost for head coach Steve Borthwick before the Six Nations.
The Cardiff-born 21-year-old represented Wales at age-grade level and had been tipped for a call-up to Warren Gatland's squad.
But it is understood he will attend an England alignment camp this week.
While that is no guarantee he will make Borthwick's final Six Nations squad, it is still a significant move.
Borthwick confirmed last week he had spoken to Feyi-Waboso and praised his excellent form for the Chiefs this season, with Rob Baxter's young side impressing in both the Premiership and Champions Cup.
"I name a squad on 17 January and what the players need to do is play well and earn their place in the selection. It is a competitive mix," said Borthwick. |

England don't have a good reputation of consistency with wingers or even a game plan to use them, he would get better remaining Welsh.

He's an interesting one. Rugby has always been something to do before he becomes a doctor. If he chooses Wales he'd need to change university halfway through a medical degree.
Good luck to him but as a welshman I'd prefer him in red.

Wales have a history of doctors, Adam Roberts recently and of course JPR - among many others.
I think he has already switched university, he was apparently at Aston for pre-clinical, which made sense with an academy place at Wasps.
But according to the press has moved to Exeter University, presumably for clinical now he is based there.
While unusual, it is not unheard of.

He had to restart in Exeter Uni. Hence Chiefs offering a 5 year contract to cover the whole period of study.
The most recent example of this is Hal Amos who came home from RWC19 saw out his Cardiff contract and joined the NHS in his late 20s.
As an aside I suspect Educational costs are outside the salary cap so nicely done there Exeter.

You are correct Richard
Players may only transfer once, such that no Player can ever represent more than two Unions for the purposes of Regulation 8.2. 4.3 Applications should be submitted to the World Rugby Regulations Committee accompanied by all relevant supporting documents by the Union to which the Player wishes to transfer.

Watching the Edinburgh v Gloucester match at the weekend, the Scottish commentators mentioned Zach Mercer switching allegiance to Scotland several times.
The basis for this being he lived in Scotland for a number of years as a youth.
However, as far as I can see, he could only play for a country that he or his parents/grandparents were born in?
He was born in England, his dad in New Zealand- I couldn't see any information about his mother or grandparents.

Ellis Genge says he has recovered from a hamstring injury before England's Six Nations opener with healing powers akin to Marvel superhero Wolverine.
England head coach Steve Borthwick is set to name his squad on Wednesday and Genge, 28, says he will be fit to face Italy on 3 February.
The Bristol prop was injured on club duty in December but could return for the derby with Bath on 27 January.
"I'm all good. They said the hammy has healed," said Genge.
"They said miraculous, like Wolverine," he added, referring to the fictional X-Men character who is able to repair damaged tissue quickly.
"They said there is still a little bit of scar tissue that is a little bit immature, so we'll just tick away at that this week. But I should be fit. |

He certainly has a lot to learn and will improve but I think we have seen far less talented attacking wingers playing for England recently with no better and in some cases worse defensive skills.

This is where the old system of County games/Divisional matches, international trial games, A/B internationals would weed out those that aren't ready for the top.
Now a days it does feel that every English qualified player in the Premiership gets the chance to play for England.

Unless the England gameplay changes dramatically, wingers will only be required to defend, chase kicks and be good in the air.

All this speculation of who is good or not for the England squad is basically opinion. My opinion is who is bothered. Total boring .. let's see how far I can kick it before it's returned and lets see if i can kick it further when i kick it back. I know ... let's play to see if we can't lose before let's see if we can win . Forget it boys .. you are hoodwinked every season. Watch national league rugby. It's entertaining and costs 10% of watching sh**e

Have to agree with that Carlos but surely there's much more to it than that. To add to the kick tennis (or Drive back as we used to call it as kids) we have scrums that have to be reset virtually every time they pack down and are no longer scrums but competition to win penalties. And, of course, let's not forget Bingo Ball, otherwise known as the box kick lottery

| Feyi-Waboso is an exciting attacking talent, however he was exposed defensively several time last weekend. |
He certainly has a lot to learn and will improve but I think we have seen far less talented attacking wingers playing for England recently with no better and in some cases worse defensive skills. |
Unless the England gameplay changes dramatically, wingers will only be required to defend, chase kicks and be good in the air.
Not sure he fits these requirements. |
Fair point. Not sure any wingers worth their salt fit that job description. Most stupidly think scoring tries is their main purpose!

I also have no idea what to expect from Italy. A new coach will bring new energy. I can't help feeling that the previous coach had completely lost the changing room. Sooner or later this run of competent italy U20s will bear fruit. Not sure they have the pack to deal with this England team.

England Leak.......
England head coach Steve Borthwick has reportedly decided to go with George Ford at fly-half against Italy over Fin Smith after Marcus Smith suffered an injury setback.
England have been preparing for the start of the Six Nations at their training camp in Girona and Borthwick was dealt a huge blow on Monday when it was revealed the 24-year-old had picked up an issue.
They're looking to get a second opinion on the injury, but there are fears Smith could miss multiple Six Nations games.
With Owen Farrell stepping down from England duty at the end of last year, Smith was seen as the frontrunner to become the nation's new starting fly-half.
But his injury made it a straight fight between Ford and Smith, a 21-year-old rookie who has earned huge praise for his performances with Northampton. According to the Telegraph, the experienced Ford has been selected over Smith to start as England's number 10 against the Azzurri.
Ford steered England to a stunning victory over Argentina at last year's World Cup with a heroic display with the boot, but he ended up being dropped for the knockout stages as Farrell resumed his role as the first-choice fly-half.
But it's elsewhere in Borthwick's line-up that may raise some eyebrows.
The uncapped duo of Ethan Roots and Fraser Dingwall are reportedly set to be handed their international debuts.
The Exeter flanker is said to be in the side to start as blindside flanker alongside Sam Underhill and Ben Earl.
Meanwhile, Dingwall will partner Henry Slade in the midfield at inside centre.
Freddie Steward will reportedly get the nod at full-back while Elliot Daly and Tommy Freeman will provide the speed on the wings.
Ford is set to be partnered by England veteran Danny Care as the number nine with Alex Mitchell reportedly suffering from an 'infected wound in his leg' that has prevented him from training.
Care and Ford will give Borthwick vasts amount of experience on the field with the pair combining for 187 caps between them.
Jamie George will step onto the field as England's captain for the first time in the front row alongside Will Stuart.
Maro Itoje, Ollie Chessum and Joe Marler reportedly complete the tight five with Borthwick going strong for England's Six Nations opener.
But the England head coach has been limited in some of his selections for this year's Six Nations with a host of players moving to leagues abroad, making them ineligible for selection.
Henry Arundell is one of England's brightest young talents, but he moved from Racing 92 from London Irish to make unable to represent his country for the time being.
The RFU's current selection criteria bans players who play outside of England from being selected for the Test side.
Borthwick spoke last year of his hope that the RFU would eventually abandon the selection criteria on players playing overseas.

Law 3 says 15 on field of play which includes the In Play area

Somewhat like the curate's egg, good in parts. I had this down as the 6 Nations decider! I think Ireland have pulled it off, albeit having a few problems in the front row.
I await the rest of the first weekend's matches which I suspect will be inconclusive with pressure on all 4 teams to step up. Rome will not be straightforward but I suspect Scotland will do enough to win in Cardiff.

Even if you took away the red, France were never really in the game.

While I see the reason behind the unchanged selection for the Wales game I would have preferred a little more power and a touch more flair. My offers Feyi-Waboso for Daly, Cunningham-South for Underhill and Smith for Ford. This is assuming the first two can play either side. Any other suggestions / views ?

Restrictions applied by the powers that be in world rugby as to when the international window is open for when players are to be made available for their international teams. England pay PRL for additional time outside of this window before the games to allow for additional training, so players from outside of England do not have to be released out side of the international window. French clubs for example don't let English clubs away from their clubs until they have to, so England chose not to select said players who are not available. The other side of the coin is that players who stay in England are rewarded for doing so with caps that might have gone to those who take the euro, so the players were also behind driving this rule.

One of my favourite rugby facts is that the man who helped build the Ireland development system was later head hunted by Italy to set up theirs.
Stephen Aboud essentially took the Dublin private schools system and replicated it in the rugby parts of Italy.

Last night the Italian scrum was magnificent and had the Irish pack in desperate straits for most of the match. Italy well deserved their half time lead and were unlucky not to close the match out and take the victory.
It was a poor performance from Ireland who looked like they were expecting an easier time following their previous match against France. A deserved wake-up call to the boys in green if they have serious aspirations about achieving another Grand Slam.
Hopefully over the next few years we'll see members of this young Italian pack step up to their senior team and make the Azzurri a more formidable and fearsome opponent.

May not be a shining star but Dingwall is an example of Community Rugby Development at it's best - started M&Y at Cambridge when 6 (or was it 5) and stayed until Northampton came calling.
Key element never addressed at HQ - players made through work of volunteers - but that's the beauty of rugby - the love of the game - until the scavengers come calling.

To be fair Ireland have only been successful in the last 10 or 12 years. They brought in David Nucifora in 2014 as High Performance Director responsible for all professional rugby. At the time Joe Schmidt was Head coach of Leinster and then became head coach of Ireland. Nucifora’s pedigree was pretty good in Coaching in New Zealand and Performance director in Australia. Football isn’t as popular in schools in Ireland with Gaelic Football and Rugby probably more so. Provinces are restricted as to what overseas players they can bring in depending on how it would affect the Irish players I see Nucifora and Schmidt have teamed up again in Australia

Dublin schools have some of the best training bases in rugby. Irish government support (Covid grants not loans) Shared Aviva stadium with Irish FA Irish tax law for entertainers (including sportspeople) much more advantageous than UK.
Ulster has had UK and Irish money thrown at it.
Good on them.

Scottish Rugby are calling on the sport's governing body to acknowledge that a game-defining mistake was made in the last seconds of Scotland's Six Nations game against France.
The SRU say the integrity of the tournament was in danger of being compromised when referee Nic Berry and TMO Brian MacNeice appeared to U-turn on their decision to award Scotland a match-winning try.
The SRU would like to know how that process played out and want World Rugby to state that an error was made. |
Personally I believe that this is a bad route for a union to go down in choosing to challenge in public contentious decisions. It also deflects attention from the team's own poor decision making and performance - in this match spurning a penalty in front of the posts at half time and a second half kicking duel that achieved very little.

I feel sorry for Scotland because I’m 90% sure it was a try but the camera angles did not show it had 100% touched the ground and therefore the TMO couldn’t overrule the onfield decision

It was not clear an obvious that a try had been scored, and if it had not been the 80th minute, I think I would have given held up.
But it does look like it was on the foot, then moved to the side and down. And had I seen that, I might have given it. But I would have to be at the perfect angle - and even then it might not have been clear.
The Scots should have done more in the previous 80 minutes - especially in that second half, they stopped playing.

I do not feel sorry for the Scottish. Earlier in the match they were involved in some of the worst kicking ping pong I have ever seen -- a terrible advert for the game! They should have played more positive rugby in the 2nd half.

Super rugby are apparently going to trial getting rid of the law that if the kicker moves five metres, they put the opposition on-side.
I believe they think that this will give the receiver more options to run, though the result will be the kicker has to chase the kick.
We might see as much kicking, just with more chasing.

In thousands of matches across the world without the dubious benefit of umpteen video replays, the decision not to award the try would have been made in a matter of seconds. Why so? Because the grounding of the ball on or over the line was not clear. The correct decision was made, in my opinion.

I like this.
We could even end up with more kicking as this will theoretically create more space.
Who knows? But a good development nonetheless.

World Rugby has no plans to issue a public explanation of the decision not to award Scotland what would have been a winning try against France.
Scottish Rugby called on the governing body to acknowledge that a game-defining mistake was made in the last seconds of Saturday's Six Nations game.
But World Rugby will be sticking to its stance of not commenting publicly on specific officials' decisions and is not expected to issue any clarification to clear the situation up in the public domain. |

Centre Manu Tuilagi has been included in England's initial 36-man squad preparing to face Scotland in the Six Nations at Murrayfield on 24 February.
Tuilagi, 32, has recovered from a groin injury and is joined by hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie and lock George Martin.
Fly-half Marcus Smith and centre Ollie Lawrence will also join the squad as they continue their rehabilitation.
However, hooker Jamie Blamire, flanker Tom Pearson and utility back Oscar Beard drop out. |

Louis Lynagh has been picked for Italy's training squad before their Six Nations game against France.
The Harlequins wing has been called up two days after announcing he would join Italian club Benetton in July.
The 23-year-old son of former Australia captain Michael Lynagh was born in Italy, where his father also played for the Treviso-based club.
Lynagh joined an England training squad in 2021 but was never capped, although he has played for England Under-20s.
Italy head coach Gonzalo Quesada announced the inclusion of Lynagh, who is also eligible to play for Australia, in their latest training squad on Wednesday.
The training camp begins in Rome on Sunday, 18 February, a week before Italy travel to Lille to face France in their next match of the 2024 Six Nations. |
