A very hospitable club Nottingham - I'm sure they will be lending some players to Leeds to make up the numbers if required. I'm hoping the pie & Bovril will be up to Donny's usual high standard when I come up in a few weeks.

Think we will wait and see who the RFU and Yorkshire have got lined up to be DR/Loan players Bath and Sale have been mentioned .

On their website Bath have a 1st team squad of 49 and I think only4/5 are off to the world cup so they could happily lend 10 or so to Yorkshire for some match practice. On the other hand Sale show a squad of 31

Top man Capt. I extracted the original list from http://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/scores-fixtures/2019-09-21" rel="nofollow - https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/scores-fixtures/2019-09-21 but Pirates & Scottish confirm that it is the RAG so I have amended the original & apologise to Silverfish who should properly review his predictions particularly the one where he predicts Falcons will beat Jersey and score five tries - more chance of Falcons lending Jersey Sam Lockwood & Gary Graham for the match than that Falcons winning at St Peter next week - a home banker surely.

You may need to click on the 'x' next to Pool 1, and then it should show the fixtures for all 3 pools. Not that easy to navigate around IMHO, but anyway...

London Scottish vs Cornish Pirates

Assistant referees: Clare Daniels, Michael Woods Mr Turvey's last trip to St Peter was a tad eventful for the visitors London Scottish who had a journey from hell to get to the Island on a foggy day. Having spent over 5 hours on the plane including circling around overhead the airport they eventually got in after a pre-match meal of airline biscuits. A 20 minute warm up and ultimately conceding 6 tries to Jersey in a big defeat before dashing back to the airport. I'm sure Falcon's enormous budget will fund flights and accommodation to avoid the need for a similar day trip.

Wohoo!!...been looking forward to seeing some rugby for months and here we are only 4 big sleeps away
So let's get cracking with some well informed predictions based on form and which way the wind happened to be blowing up at the airport this morning:
Nottingham 5 v 0 Yorkshire Carnegie ... no brainer really considering the absolute turmoil that has been going on in Headingley. Anything other than 5-0 would be a huge shock
Ampthill 0 v 5 Coventry ... Cov had a cracking season last time out and will want to have an impact early on against the 'newbies' even though we are only in the Cup Group stages.
Bedford Blues 4 v 1 Ealing Trailfinders ... Cracking game first up. Going to be close I think and Blues may just scrape this one, but an open encounter nevertheless.
Cornish Pirates 5 v 0 London Scottish ... Long way to travel for a season opening cup game and I think that the Pirates at home will just be too strong. I do expect LS to improve as the groups progress
Doncaster Knights 5 v 0 Hartpury RFC ... I can't see the West Country 'imports' playing in this one, so a hard fought, but comfortable win for the Knights.
Jersey 4 v 1 Newcastle Falcons ... Here we go then. Not too sure how the Falcons pre-season has gone, but Jersey have had some good challenges with highs and lows. I expect a really hard game and a very tight home win for Jersey to complete the PL set.

Nottingham 4-1 Yorkshire Carnegie -I hope it's a good game and no one
gets hurt.
Doncaster Knights 5-0 Hartpury I
don't expect many Barbarians to turn out for cup matches so banker bonus point
home win.
Ampthill 1-4 Coventry Could go either way but Cov to have a
great season.
Bedford Blues 2-5 Ealing Trailfinders Tie
of the round by two great attacking teams but Trailfinders will want to start
really strong
Jersey 5-1 Newcastle Falcons Banker home win and Jersey to hold
Falcons to a single losing bonus point
London Scottish 1-4 Cornish Pirates These two sides usually put on great contests and
the end result could go either way.
------------- Dont kick it. Pick it up and GO FORWARD.

They will `loan` players from other clubs during the league fixtures throughout the season
------------- Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

Finally the waiting is over:
Nottingham 5-0 Yorkshire Carnegie - Hopefully Notts start well Doncaster Knights 5-0 Hartpury - It will be interesting to see Hpury squad, Knights better than last year.. Ampthill 4-1 Coventry - Great start for Amps Bedford Blues 2-5 Ealing Trailfinders Tie of the round by two great attacking teams but Trailfinders will want to start really strong - agreed Jersey 1-5 Newcastle Falcons Pre-season opener for Falcons, but expect they have too much for a very good Reds team London Scottish 1-5 Cornish Pirates Pirates stronger than last year, think Scottish might struggle this year.
------------- Run with it

LS 2 - 5 Pirates ... A long way for the Pirates to travel, but I think that they will still have too much for a LS side that will give it a good go up to the final whistle. Could be a few points in this one.

Friday 20 September Nottingham vs Yorkshire Carnegie 19.45 - 5-0. I don't believe that Carnegie will look anything like a professional or semi-professional side. They have admitted that they are treating this as their preseason. Saturday 21 September (All at 15.00) Ampthill vs Coventry - 1-5 - Some interesting recruitment from Ampthill, but Coventry has real ambition and I think that they will be targeting the cup (based on no evidence). Bedford Blues vs Ealing Trailfinders - 0-5 - Probably coming out too optimistically, but Ealing looked exceptional against Nat 1 teams, and had seasoning in inter-squad scrimmages against England and Saracens. Their preparation is the exact opposite of Leeds, and I think that they come roaring out of the gates. Ben Ward has rued the loss to Blues last year several times, as well. London Scottish vs Cornish Pirates - 1-5 - I find myself unconvinced by the London Scottish recruitment, while Cornish Pirates brought in a lot of players who helped lift Leeds out of the basement last year and a great DoR. Doncaster Knights vs Hartpury RFC - 4-1. Glostolpury will presumably be playing their kids during the cup, and with the World Cup on, I can see there being less loanees available, so Donny to grind out a solid win. Jersey vs Newcastle Falcons - 4-1. Jersey played a very tough slate of pre-season fixtures. I think that those serve them in good stead against Falcons, who haven't had equivalent pre-season work. Plus, let's face it, this is Jersey. They beat the relegated side at least once every year (though I'd prefer that they did it during the regular season).

Friday 20 September Nottingham vs Yorkshire Carnegie 19.45 - 5-0. Could be a BIG margin of victory Saturday 21 September (All at 15.00) Ampthill vs Coventry - 1-5 - An 'easier' start than it could have been but they will find life tough Bedford Blues vs Ealing Trailfinders - 0-5 - Cash talks London Scottish vs Cornish Pirates - 0-5 See above Doncaster Knights vs Hartpury RFC - 5-1. Donny to beat a side that will not be seen again due to the changes week in week out that Hartpury seem to have Jersey vs Newcastle Falcons - 1-4. Falcons not to find it as easy at L2 this time around but probably too much for most.

Just got back felt very sorry for some of the LC players as they were out of their depth, Nottingham played a hard well organised game with some great back play. Baths Mike Williams was only let on with 5 minutes to play !!!!!!!!!!! it may be something to do with the Bath statement that he will be back in Bath on Monday to resume training. Tom Varndell looked a shadow of his former Premiership self although Guy Graham when he came on after 50 mins looked very useful. Leeds will get better they have been together for a couple of weeks whereas Nottingham have had a 15 week training block and it showed. Remember this was the first game for both sides so don't read too much into it I think when the league starts both will be a lot better

No actually it’s Newcastle 156 Rugby Lions 5 I also remember Cov beating Notts 102-22 and Roth beating Moseley 102-3 but Newcastle’s result is by far & away the highest.

S'right. Iirc the Newcastle and Cov results were on the same day too?
Quite a contrasting day for the team I follow, and the nearby team from the town I was born in!

HT Blues (1 try) 5 - 24 (BP) Ealing
Blues go down the slope 2nd half.
I can’t believe how many penalty offences Ealing can give at a breakdown without a yellow.
Scoreline flatters Ealing. With a try against the run of play at the end of half.
Blues have been playing without a proper fly half since the 4th minute.

Blues (1) 26 - 57 (5) Ealing
I think Ealing will be more worried from the game than Blues, as the last 10 Blues went to play and Ealing looked unfit as Blues ran in 21 points with a variety of players taking drop kick conversions.

Why 14 men? I was watching the ticker, and I didn't think that I saw a yellow?

I live close enough to see Trailfinders practices regularly. After a 14 week preseason, I doubt that they are unfit. I'm more minded to think that it was a bit of a mental slip, being up 45 points going into the last quarter. Neither are good things, but if they aren't fit after all the running I've watched, then they never will be!

Ealing went down to 14 as they lost both tighthead props. 1st Trenier came off after 58 mins to be replaced but then the replacement got knocked out almost immediately. He was stumbling all over the pitch (shouldn't play next week). Trenier came back on, but then was off injured 3 mins later.
After a 5min delay where Ealing were trying to put a prop on who presumably couldn't do tighthead they tried to be sneaky and take a prop off to leave a backrow player on, eventually ended with the backrower coming off and uncontested scrums.
Ok... Ealing couldn't match the superior fitness of Blues in the last 10 mins. They had almost a minute timeout after the 3rd try presumably to get organised and not let a 4th try in.
Score line flattered Ealing (who did score a few good tries) but doesn't matter, as soon as our flyhalf went down we weren't going to risk him, so from that point onwards I felt the bonus point was the aim.
The Blues had a prop at hooker in the 2nd half and a backline who hadn't played together with a couple just coming back from injury. I would imagine the league game will be closer game.

Just back from the game at St. Peters. A tight game which I think Jersey deserved more out of. Matched Falcons in every department apart from 2. In the scrum (for most of the 1st half) and the lineout. Both were more even once we shook the front row up a bit. Sir was poor IMHO. He didn't manage the breakdown at all well for either side. Lots of naughty blocks going on which all went unpunished. Jersey had 2 yellows (both justified). the 1st to our loose head who had a horrible 1st half and was penalised time and time again after engagement. The 2nd was to our 9 who lay all over the ball following one of the few Falcons breaks, about 5 or so out from the line. The ref had blown his whistle for the infringement and Newcastle seemed to carry on playing/took a quick one????....it just would have been nice if the 'tap' had have been taken in the same post code to the infringement. It did gift Newcastle 7 points that took the game away from Jersey. 4-1 would have been fairer than 4-0, but I'm not disputing the result. If I were the Falcons, I would be more worried about what an unfit, poor Ealing have done to Bedford away from home. The league games between the two could be really interesting affairs, even when the Internationals come back. Anyway, great to be back watching 'almost' meaningful rugby again, just a shame that we need to wait a few weeks before the next home game.

Admittedly I didn’t see the game but to go down by over 30 points at home Is a stuffing. Raises the question of whether Bedford are ever deservedly beaten? 😳

How can you say that when you were not at the game? Ealing certainly deserved the victory. They were more clinical and Blues blundered some opportunities.
On one hand you had a squad of players who have had an intensive training camp against England and Saracens ready to hit the ground running.
On the other a squad of 30 (1 is away on International duty), where several have been out injured having had ops etc. getting ready for the league season to start.
Ealing went as they usually do against us, to infringe at the breakdown and slow the game down. The referee allowed them to do this and get away with it in terms of not giving a yellow. There must have been 8 penalties in the 1st half for a breakdown offence without action. When Ealing could no longer do this, as they couldn't get the breakdowns as they had the Blues ran in 3 tries.
Just before half time was a key turning point having just scored Blues looked like they would score again only for a charge down and then Ealing to run 65 m the other way. So it could've been 12 - 19 instead of 5 - 24.
Ealing have to come to Blues in late October and that should be a better gauge of how good they are.

A very enjoyable game at RAG with both sides committed to playing quick, aggressive, running Rugby. Result could have gone either way.
As an LS supporter, and accepting that it was only one game, I thought that a vastly superior performance and a huge improvement on most of what I saw last season. A cohesive side delivering an eighty minute performance and little sign of the lazy indiscipline that cost us so dearly and so frequently last term.
V happy with that. A shame that there were not a few more there to see it.
