Saw this headline today, and thought that it was somewhat interesting in light of what is going on in English Rugby. Scotland seems to think that it can't even support 6 semi-pro teams, and wasn't getting value from them. I believe that many of their matches were also televised. Also interesting to see that they were not consulted at all, seems familiar.

Soo glad that London Scottish didn't go there when it was 'offered' and we decided to remain in our rightful place at L2 in England (how on earth would we have unravelled from that one...) the person pictured in this article, outgoing chief executive Mark Dodson, is reported by the same media outlet to have been paid £676k last year, and "almost certainly in excess of £6.5m over his 12-year stint at the top of Scottish Rugby".

Meanwhile on the western side of the Severn, Wales are building an Elite Championship League (or something). 9 sides are involved. They wanted 10 but Cardiff haven't joined yet so there's a blank space for now. At least that's how I understand it.

The trouble was that the not so Super Six consisted of six franchises with absolutely no history or tradition. Added to that the competition was appallingly marketed, changed format regularly, games were cancelled in order to play other fixtures at the last minute and teams were told they had to play home games on their opponents ground without consultation. And as mentioned elsewhere the SRU CEO was paid a fortune for introducing this basket case of a competition. Does this ring any bells with events in Wales and England in recent years?

Saw a Super six game last September. One of the Franchises was a Scotland development team, one(Southern knights) was a Borders Franchise playing out of Melrose. The rest were club based I believe (Watsonians, Ayr etc). The guy who was explaining it to me said it wouldn’t work as the Borders were so parochial they wouldn’t travel between the towns to watch them and the franchise had no chance of getting the best players from the borders as they would only play for their Borders town ------------- Winning isn't everything, it just makes the beer taste better |

I'm afraid this is incorrect. The
original Super Six teams were all franchises based on club grounds. The only
difference between the franchises at Melrose and those at Boroughmuir,
Watsonians, Stirling, Heriot's and Ayr was that the Melrose based one chose a
neutral name (Southern Knights) whereas the others had variations of the
names of the clubs on whose ground they played. For the most recent competition the Melrose-based Knights signed Chris Bell (Gala) and Monroe Job (Selkirk) to join fellow former Borderers Anderson, Borthwick, Rutherford and Wilson (all ex-Gala), Greer and Sutherland (ex-Hawick) and Cottrell (ex-Selkirk). I hesitate to say the guy explaining it to you didn't know what he was talking about but ..... |

| No-one it seems have grasped the reality that no-one in the borders will support another club/franchise that is not their town team. The Border Reivers was another failed example of lack of any knowledge as to what exists. It perfectly highlights the total lack of any planning or understanding of the game in Scotland by the SRFU, we think the English RFU is living on another planet, well the Murrayfield lot are not even in the same Universe. |
