Ealing Trailfinders to face Doncaster Knights: As you might expect, a strong squad to face Knights. I see many players still missing due to injury, and I would like to see Josh Taylor or Will Montgomery in the squad, but Rayn Smid captaining will have the team working like a well-oiled machine. A strong Welsh pairing at 9-10 as well will bring plenty of experience pulling the strings. - Lefty Zigiriadis

For their game at Northampton, Ampthill made 10 changes from the starting XV last week against Chinnor, and got heavily beaten.
In unrelated news, Saracens A played Edinburgh A last night.........

If Saracens A played Edinburgh that's probably why Amptill made so many changes, their baby sarries weren't available

Ealing 21 (3T) - Donny 20 (2T) 28' - Ealing have been unstoppable with ball in hand, but they have been utterly been utterly boneheaded at the breakdown, giving Donny possession inside the 22 three times.

Ealing 26 (BP) - Donny 28 (3T) HT - as I said, Ealing unstoppable with ball in hand, bit giving up possession and penalties in their own 22 when trying to exit.

Donny have taken full and fair advantage of every Ealing mistake. But they honestly might only have 50 meters made.

Smash and grab job from Bedford against Hartpury. Led for a grand total of about 4 mins but fortunately 2 of those were at the end. Hartpury unlucky to lose, thought they were the better team but Bedford slightly more clinical.

We played without the ball and then butchered try of the week and tried our best to do the same for the winning try.
Always felt we were going to win it.

BBC as accurate as ever, got Donny as played 3 won 2 lost 1 on 9pts, should be 10, only one point but that could be difference in being top, or .....

An enjoyable day and entertaining match at Chinnor.
Playing with the traditional breeze Chinnor led 24-10 at half time, and could have been further ahead. The second half was tight, and with 12 minutes remaining, Chinnor missed a relatively straight forward penalty which would have left Caldy needing three scores. Caldy came back to make it 24-17 to set up a tense finale, but Chinnor scored with the final play of the game to deprive Caldy of a losing point.
A full review is attached for anyone interested https://fatbearssportingdiaries.blogspot.com/2024/10/chinnor-31-17-caldy-att-1622-202425.html" rel="nofollow - https://fatbearssportingdiaries.blogspot.com/2024/10/chinnor-31-17-caldy-att-1622-202425.html

This league is bonkers. Pirates win away at Nottingham. Nottingham win away at Doncaster, Doncaster win away at Ealing. Pirates, albeit with a lot of injuries to key players lose at L Scottish a week after running Ealing very close.

I think Pirates and Ealing probably suffered a little this week after their physical battle last week.
Blues up next for Pirates, so 2 of the harder away games to start off with. Hope we actually turn up for this one!
Chinnor have had almost the nicest possible first 3 games to start the season and ease themselves in.

The Rugby Paper (as per) isn't much better. Just check the top try scorers list. Olowofela and Martin both under-credited - and having not checked further I wouldn't be surprised if others are similar. It's not hard.

You have clearly upped your offering to recognise Chinnor's new Championship status despite easier access to the beer. Interesting background information and a great advertisement for the club (as long as you don't plan to sit in the roofless stand)....and you resisted mention of the Mob's selection this week.
A couple of questions which you may be able to help with. Has Jason Worrall retired and do you know what happened to Joe Browning...has he signed elsewhere?
The RFU are not the only governing body to screw things up. In league, London Broncos were relegated before a ball was kicked following a review of clubs with their brightest stars signed by other clubs before the end of the season as a result. I dislike it when people make decisions that lead to the playing field being as level as Caldy's pitch.

It looks like Jason Worrall has retired, his Linked-In profile has his rugby career ending in May 2024

I was surprised and disappointed by the turnout yesterday, for what should have been one of the standout home fixtures of the season. It was a nail biting match but the performance and atmosphere was subdued imo.
Genuinely I think this is what happens when you neglect a competition with no/unrealistic promotion and relegation (at both ends of the table). That doesn’t excuse Ealing from not really building on their core support but when there are a lot of alternative entertainment options on offer within 30 mins travel time, there has to be some meaning to the competition otherwise how do you attract local casual rugby fans?
Anecdotally round here, Champ rugby is seen as being on a par with non-league football and that really is the fault of the RFU and PRL.

Except that Vanarama attendances often top 5000, and Southend average over 7k. Way ahead of the Champ.
