It's between Esher and Taunton for drop, Taunton have the easier of the remaining fixtures.

Yeah, Taunton are hosting Leeds, so most people will be surprised if they don't have a bonus point win, whereas Esher have the challenge of beating Rams who will be desperate for a win to secure promotion.

Teams with nothing to play for, apart from pride can cause problems for those who have and nerves can play a big part. Interesting end to season, glad my team out of the relegation mire, but not expecting anything from playing Sale and Cambridge away..

It is a long way from Plymouth to Leeds.
I suspect Leeds will, like Plymouth, travel on the day.
Taunton might be slightly closer, but still a long way.

Until the RFU restore full travel funding, permitting teams to afford to stay over, those games will be dominated by travel issues.

Ironic that next year Leicester Lions mileage will reduce with Plymouth and possibly Taunton the only really long trips.

Statistically whilst competitive away from home, Leeds have only won away twice, against Hull and Esher.
Rams have lost three times away from home at Sale, Albion and Cinderford.

I guess it will be tight and may come down to visiting sides motivations. Rams for the title and Leeds ????

Tough on either Esher or Taunton to get relegated given how competitive they have been in the final run in.

I hate to say it but Esher’s hopes of survival rest on Wasps and London Scottish, together with the RFU and the Championship!

How painful will the second half against Chinnor in March feel, leading by 17 at the end of the first half, losing by 5 at the end of the second half. Wrong tactics and poor performance.

What worries me, especially after the last two weeks, is that in two years time, Cambridge could be playing in an expanded National 1, with not just teams 24-38, but teams 21-49. As could Caldy, Richmond, Nottingham, Sale, Rams - and Worthing, Dings.

Will we need to include a mercy rule stopping a game when one side reaches 100 points?

Depending on league structure and rewards for winning, I think the leagues will eventually balance out. Off course there will always be one sided games but not as many as you probably are thinking about now.

well no, because (much as it saddens me to say) the logic will be an overall decline in standards at the level across the board

This sort of argument was raised when discussing the Nat2 West league with clubs out of their depth getting hammered, well it didn't happen, clubs rose to the challenge and there were plenty of surprise results.

Im sure Mr Inverdale can bend the rules and use his seat on the RFU Council  so the 3rd from bottom does not go down because its his club!

Anybody else would be told the Champ go one less as has happened every year and the bottom 3 of National one go!

I think one season after implementation is a *little* early to discern long term effects - especially on the stronger clubs. I'd say 'let's have another look at level 4 in 5-6 years time', except by then it will probably have been reorganised another couple of times.

I still think the logical end point is not cricket scores against the bottom clubs, but blunting the edge of the top ones.

Furthermore OutOfTouch, if John WERE capable of bending the rules to benefit Esher, I wonder why he hasn’t saved us from demotion in the past . . . 🤔

Maybe try thinking before typing.

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/apr/17/rfu-accused-of-running-down-championship-with-fears-over-promotion" rel="nofollow - From a Guardian article mainly about the Championship:

Quote
In a further twist, however, a last‑ditch bid has been launched behind the scenes to save the Championship’s bottom side, currently London Scottish, from relegation this season. As well as potentially creating a 14-team league in 2023‑24, it would also potentially mean two clubs, rather than three, being relegated from National One this season. With one of those affected National One sides, Esher, due to play their final fixture against the league leaders Rams on Saturday, the RFU Council will debate the motion on Friday.

Whilst the rest of the rugby community want an organising body in charge who are capable of deciding on the terms of relegation more than a day before the end of the official season (assuming the current bunch of clowns can even do that).

This looked like a cracking match, Taunton have some strong runners in there!

Talking of strong runners, have a look at Kalling-Smith swatting off half of Cinderford on the way to the try line last Sat:

https://www.ramsrugby.com/videos/match-highlights-rams-3828-cinderford-150423-189561.html" rel="nofollow - https://www.ramsrugby.com/videos/match-highlights-rams-3828-cinderford-150423-189561.html

Just a shame they couldn't get at least a losing BP in the away fixture Dockham Road before Xmas, going to rue that come this Sat I feel, unless Cambridge slip up at Albion, which I think is unlikely.

I for one would love John to influence the decisions made by the RFU Council. I see no value in either Esher or Taunton going down . In fact I'd be disappointed if a conflict of interest was declared. If his position on the RFU Council is to support National League Rugby, I'm sure I trust him to do the right thing. We are after all talking about the RFU here who generally have no idea what happens below the low water mark.
