Ealing signs Ollie Fox, scrum half from Bath. He's 23, and has 21 premiership appearances for Bath, but I won't hold those against him. I wonder what this means for the future of Craig Hampson (31) and Jordan Burns (28), both of whom are significantly older. There's also Irishman Stephen Kerrins (26) in the mix.

To me, Hampson is a quality Scrum Half, and must still be first choice for Ealing

Joe Gray - Quins Hooker (retiring from playing this summer) joins London Scottish as Head Coach, to work with/under new DoR Bryan Redpath.  Joe has been the DoR at Barnes RFC in recent years also.

Maisey played incredibly well last season so good to have him signed up.

I understand that RP have a good income stream from the advertising hoardings, therefore it is affordable money. The issue is that they have not yet turned it into promotion.

They have been very competitive in the 16-team league era, three second places and two thirds and only outside the top eight once.

There will certainly be a large turnover of players this year at Richmond i know of at least 15 who will be leaving//have left at the end of the season ontop of a further 15 who left during the season.

A few have gone to Australia
A few have gone to Full/Time Rugby
1 went to Scottish
A few have gone to the National Leagues for more money//game-time opportunities

Ealing also sign Dan Lancaster from Leicester. Dan is indeed Stuart Lancaster's son. He is 21 and plays fly-half and centre. Apparently he played on loan from Nottingham. Any view from that contingent?

Also announced today is Ross Kane, prop from Ulster. At 27, Ross has 60 appearances for Ulster, and seemed to be about 3rd choice this year.

Yes, quite excited by this one. Jonah actually grew up in Ealing as well. I heard a rumor that missing out on promotion cost a few other big signings, but this one has come through. Ealing also add David Bridge from Loughborough/Leicester. He plays second and back row.

New man joining!
Welsh centre Garyn has signed a one year contract to join the pirates. He has played at under 18 and 20 level for Wales and at 7s.
He has made over 100 appearances for Cardiff where he won a European challenge cup medal.

Ealing continue to drip-feed announcements. Backrow/2nd Row Rob Farrar signs from Newcastle, as does Will Montgomery, also a back/2nd row. Both are the sorts of young players who get regular appearances, but rare starts as far as I can tell. Not sure why Ealing have raided Newcastle so hard recently, but I wonder if there has been more focus on English talent this year due to having many of the young talents that they signed from South Africa head back home after one season.

Also four academy players were signed to senior contracts: Harry Dugmore, Cam Terry (hooker who scored 5 tries in the cup), Tom Georgiou, and Isaac Shaw.

Dacres was an excellent lineout player, perhaps slightly less effective in the loose -although he did turn up on a lot of my photos of the action.

He spent an awful lot of this last season injured though and I have no idea how his recovery was going. I am sorry to see hileave, but it's not a great surprise. He was a player I enjoyed watching play.

'turn up' is how I remember him - one of a number of our players at that time who just used to pop up all over the pitch regardless of where they 'should' be - George Oram would be another one of those, as would Jack Preece.

Rob Knox is a great player seems to have an ability to give himself so much time and space on the ball. Great decision maker and seems to see gaps that shouldn’t be there. Nile Dacres must be one of the top defensive line out operatives in the championship or national 1, when he was partnered with Tom Jubb they offered a distinctly difficult second row to play against

He's a good bloke, reasonably local, not quite as fast as he once was, but can still break tackles, and has a very good long kick for those 50m+ penalties. He should be very useful to you.

I'd forgotten Knocker's monster kicks. Haven't seen one for  a while. I think we were all a little bemused the first time he stepped up for one, but there was no doubting his ability after the first.

Today's two announcements from Coventry.
Lock, Rhys Thomas retained and promoted from the Academy to the full team.

Hooker Jordan Poole, previously a loaner from Exeter signed to Coventry.
The latter had been signposted during the cup when he started as Captain on two occasions, despite being a loan player.

Both players are very welcome retentions.

The speed issue probably won't matter so much in National League 1, but monster kicks could be very useful.  Our kickers have been decent, but long range hasn't been an option for them unless there's been a strong trailing wind.

They'll be all change in the Richmond Front Row - with a further player being confirmed to have moved to full-time rugby.

Alun Walker (hooker), Max Northcote-Green (flanker), Jordan Burns (scrum half) and Luke Daniels (full back) Simon Linsell (2nd row), George Davis (prop), Barney Maddison (2nd row), Simon Uzokwe (flanker) and Angus Kernohan (wing) all re-sign for Ealing, while David O'Connor, Munster second row signs for Ealing, having been on loan for the cup.

That's most of the heart of the squad re-signed for next year. A good mixture of old and new talent shaping up. I'd be surprised if there wasn't one or two experienced premiership players snaffled up as salary cap casualties yet.

The latter had been signposted during the cup when he started as Captain on two occasions, despite being a loan player.

Both players are very welcome retentions.

Great retention from Cov with Jordan Poole was great at DMP I think he will end up as a premiership player certainly has all the attributes

How has Simon Uzokwe performed this season he was earmarked for great things at Falcons but seems Jamie Blamire and other took the rains? He was suggested to develop as a winger once upon a time

Uzokwe was in the Championship dream team, garnering over half the votes. He regularly looks the best player on the pitch.

An incredibly quality player. This is the kind of signing that I expected to see more of to be honest, as high level talent just couldn't be retained under the new salary cap.

But of course Bedford is a semi-pro club.

Ah this old chestnut. Of course, we are also secretly training during the week and just pretending we only train Monday, Tuesday and Thursday eves. All of the day jobs the players have are merely fronts.

Even Rich Lane had a proper job before Bristol signed him.

May be true, but he was on 45k a year at Bedford.

There was a stage when Bedford did train during the day however i think this was pre-covid.

It helps when you have a crowd average of 2,658… say 1,500 above the average at say £18 p.p by 11 league game = £297,000. Plus we have lost Lane and Atkinson who wouldn’t have been cheap.

Semi-pro vs pro has nothing to do with what you pay players. At least not in my view. It’s whether your team consists of full time professionals who’s sole income is from Rugby, or whether it consists of part time players who supplement their rugby income with other jobs. At no point since the Frank Warren era have Bedford ever been a full time club or trained as a team during the days in the week. I’m amazed how often I’ve clarified this over the years. There have been players who have chosen to focus solely on rugby and do individual gym/analysis sessions etc in the day, but at no point during the Championship era have we ever trained more than 3 nights a week as team. I’m also not clear how you are privy to Rich Lane’s salary given this would be confidential information not in the public domain (I’ve certainly got no idea if that figure is correct or not).

Anyway way off topic now so will try and end this so people can get back to signings.

Edit: I have googled the definition of semi pro and it basically fits what I described above:

receiving payment for an activity but not relying entirely on it for a living; semi-professional”

Player retires from professional rugby and returns to former club in a player-coach capacity.  Nothing to see here.

Possibly a move to full time?
If I got it right he was a teaching assistant. The Cov full timers (if he is one) do a lot of work (15-20 hours per week) with local schools.

First stint which was a few years ago after signing from Ampthill was not great.

He only played a few games for us since but seemed like he had developed quite a bit and did well. He certainly has the size to be good and should be a good signing for Knights.

Garside played a few games for Notts as well.
Seemed fairly anonymous but got the job done.

I am sure that Steve Boden will help him develop as he has with all the other young props that have come under his wing both at the Knights and, previously, at Jersey. He certainly seems to have the physical dimensions to become a good one!

Has Kane signed for Harlequins? Or signed for Scottish with a view to move to Quins?

He is finishing a masters at Brunel. As per his agreement with Ealing within their senior academy whilst being aged 26...

Kane and Cardew were the standout players for me on the couple of occasions I watched Richmond last season.

Ethan Benson is slightly younger than Cardew, and started getting a fair bit of game-time towards the latter part of the season.

If he is staying alongside the likes of Bright and co, the back row will be in a good place.
