Leicester Lions can confirm that a number of 1st team players and coaches won't be returning for the 24/25 season.
The details of those departing can be found below:
Jamel Hamilton
Last season's vice captain has moved to Bristol for work and will be joining Clifton RFC for the upcoming season. Jamel leaves having made 142 appearances for the club.
Dan Lewis
Dan played all 26 games last season having signed at the start of the season from Moseley. He leaves the club having taken up an exciting new job opportunity with the Red Bull F1 team.
Dan Martin
Having reached 100 games for the club last season, the former club captain calls time on his rugby career to focus on family and work commitments.
Drew Rudkin
An absolute club legend, Drew has decided to hang up the boots after 312 appearances for the club spanning an impressive 17 years.
Will Ward
The second row has decided to end his playing career having played 83 games for the club since signing from South Leicester in 2019.
Joey Patrick
Having joined halfway through the 22/23 season the full-back was one of the stand-out players last season. Joey has decided to focus on work and family commitments and will turn out for his local side, Northampton Old Scouts, when he has opportunity to play.
Devon Coulson
The second row made 6 appearances for the Lions last season but leaves to join Hinckley RFC in search of more game time.
Oscar McCarthy
The scrum half made his debut for the Lions in 2023 as a 17 year old and went on to make 3 appearances before heading to play in Australia last season. Oscar will go to university when he returns.
Dale Ager
After 4 years as head forwards coach the former Lions hooker has stepped down from his role to spend more time with his young family.
Lloyd Warner
The backs coach has left to take up the head coach role at Broadstreet RFC.
Jason Aldwinckle
The former head coach has called time on his coaching career having been involved with the club ever since it's inauguration in 1999.
We thank all of those departing for the time and commitment they have given the club and wish them all the best with what comes next. Having all been part of the most successful two years in the club's history, they have all certainly leave the 'shirt' in a better place than they found it.

A further signing by Rams, a fairly local move for another young player, tight head Nick Barry from Camberley. Quite a step up from Regional 1 to Nat 1 but good luck to him:

A fourth signing for Rams. Nile Dacres - an experienced lock who's been playing in Spain for the last two years. Prior to that he was at Cov, Albion and Moseley, amongst others. I'm sure he'll add further strength to an already solid pack, and another dimension to the lineout. Good luck Nile.

PS - Yet to see any new backs added to the roster!

Another signing in the forwards, or rather a re-signing of Tom Vooght.

An absolute quality openside flanker and master of turnovers. He spent the last two seasons with Henley in Nat 2, not clear why he moved there as he was a Rams stalwart and frequent Nat 1 TOS candidate at 7. Good to have him back though, and it'll be a very competitive back row this season!

You have 2 former Blues players

Burns - is absolutely electric acceleration!  Probably lost his top end, but he get there in a blink of an eye.  He will score and create so many tries with more space in ND1.

Hirskyj-Douglas until he got seriously injured I thought he would make the step up to the Premiership.

Interesting read RamSale.

Looks like Blackheath are the team to watch out for based on it.

I don't really understand why some teams don't say who they've signed and let go though. Surely better to keep supporters in the loop?

Slightly surprised that they say Esher wouldn’t say. We have announced several signings and I have posted them on here. TRP don’t look at Club websites or this blog, it appears.

One more new name this week:

Scott Butterworth, hooker, from Exeter Uni

Darlington Mowden Park have signed Ethan Hall-Lyon, who played for Fylde last season.

He can apparently play Number 8, openside flank, and lock, so could be a replacement for Ollie Hodgson, who retired at the end of last season.

Pack looks very strong but I’m still very concerned and also disappointed that a new scrum half has not been announced

Knowing there wasn’t a natural 9 retained by DMP last year you would think they’d be keen to settle supporters nerves

It is a little concerning that we are close to the season opener and there isn't a single scrum-half on the books, but I hope that will change in the next few days as further signings are announced.

Speaking of new signings, Mowden have brought in a 21-year-old hooker, Jacob Newnam, who previously played for Glamorgan Wanderers, Barnard Castle, and Wensleydale. Because of these new additions and no-one leaving apart from Ollie's retirement, the pack could be stronger than last season.

Darlington Mowden Park are delighted to announce the signing of George Speakman. The 24 year-old scrum half joins the club ahead of the 2024/25 National One campaign, and has already linked up with the squad's pre-season preparations. Asked about the switch to DMP, Speakman said: "I’ve really enjoyed pre season at DMP, and I’m looking forward to the season ahead."

The former Northampton Saints academy scrum half joins the club having recently represented Guisborough. Speakman has previously earned England Counties U18 honours, and DMP Director of Rugby Garry Law was excited to see the young scrum half in action: "We're pleased to have George join up with us this pre season. We didn't know a lot about George but he has shown up very well during pre season and we are looking forward to seeing him get going when the games come around."

Big step up from Counties 1 last season to National 1 this season for the new Mowden scrum half - he has big boots to fill after Pascoe leaving for Chinnor.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see a duel registered scrum half from Falcons, who have about 6 or 7 on their books, to be added to Mowdens squad.

Ollie Hodgson hasn't retired, he's left to play elsewhere

Louis PeaHuckleberry becomes DMP's fourth signing of the summer ahead of the upcoming National One season. The second rower returns to the North East having graduated from Loughborough University, and was excited to get going: "Looking forward to the season starting, after 4 years away in Loughborough it’s good to be playing for a club close to home."

PeaHuckleberry joins having previously represented Newcastle Falcons academy, and is able to cover both second row and back row. Speaking about the latest addition to the squad, DMP Forwards Coach Joe Cain commented: "Louis comes to us after graduating from Loughborough University where he has played for the last few years. He’ll add some size into the second row, giving us another good lineout option and someone who will add some weight to our scrum. He’s fit in really well and someone I’m looking forward to seeing play in a Mowden shirt."

Although I understand the desire to dissuade swearing on this forum, can't something be done so we can see the name of Mowden's latest signing?

Is anyone going to be offended by the name of a male peahen?

Callum Pascoe was brilliant for us last season, appearing in every game, and becoming a reliable goalkicker by the end of the season.

I agree that moving from Counties to National 1 is a big jump, so it'll be interesting to see how George Speakman goes in the preseason games.

As you say, Newcastle have more scrum halves than they can give gametime to, so it makes sense for the Falcons, the fringe players, and for Mowden to have at least one duel registered with DMP, possibly to play the full season so he is sharp and match fit in case he is needed at Kingston Park.

Darlington Mowden Park are pleased to announce the signing of fly half Will Groves ahead of the 2024/25 National One season. Groves joins from rugby league side Castleford Tigers, and was looking forward to running out for DMP: "I'm really excited to express my talent and style of play in National One. With the club's ambitions to perform and play fast I think it’s the perfect place for me to excel."

The 20 year-old back joins DMP having previously represented Castleford and Lindenwood University, after playing for North England U18s. Asked about the newest addition to his squad, Director of Rugby Garry Law added: "Looking forward to having Will for the upcoming season. He comes fresh from full time rugby league with Castleford Tigers so is ready and raring to go."

"He has already shown he is a quick learner during the pre-season period. He's a playmaker and someone who can help control the team moving forward."

This is an interesting signing because, as far as I can see, Will Groves hasn't played rugby union before, so is definitely a 'prospect'. Rugby League does require skilful attacking players to break suffocating defences, so I hope can bring some flair to DMP's attack.

It isn't on their website yet, that Mowden announced the signing of prop Jamie Aureka Maoate Dunn on Instagram. The New Zealand-born prop can play both sides of the scrum, was with https://www.grfc.gg/news/new-signing-jamie-aureka-maoate-dunn-2794710.html" rel="nofollow - Guernsey Raiders last season, and also enjoys powerlifting!

No second team. Not sure how you keep 48 players interested without reasonably competitive second team games.
