Predictions:
Nottingham 1 v 5 Jersey - Nottingham are a tougher prospect at home but Jersey are looking good
Hartpury 5 v 1 Richmond - Hartpury on paper should have this but a lot of their results this year have gone against the formbook, could be anyone’s
Coventry 1 v 5 Bedford - Cov are having a very poor run at the moment, even at home I can’t see them stopping Bedford
Ealing 5 v 0 Ampthill - you really don’t want to be going to Vallis Way after an Ealing defeat, just ask Nottingham. I fear A’s could be in for a long afternoon.
Cornish Pirates 1 v 4 Doncaster - This is the hardest away game in the league but Donny are really hitting their form now. If we play like we did against Ealing and Jersey, Pirates could suffer a very rare home defeat.

Nottingham 2-5 Jersey - In my dreams an Away win by 2 or 3 points but both sides score 4 tries.
Hartpury 4-1 Mond -Could go either way but at home Pury should just take the win
Coventry 5-1 Bedford - Cov have too many quality players to keep losing but Blues to get 4 Tries
Ealing 5-0 Ampthill - Amps were outstanding at St Peter but at home Trailfinders will want 5 points
Pirates 5-2 Donny - The two teams most likely to chase down Ealing but at home I just give Pirates the Aaarrgh! Hope a total of 7 points accrue in this game rather than 4.

Having only got two of yesterday’s results correct, I fear my time at the top of the prediction table will be short-lived. And my predictions for this week will continue that trend.

Nottingham 1-4 Jersey. Nottingham might be strongest at home on a Friday night, but Jersey are a top four side and should get the win.
Hartpury 5-0 Richmond. The home side’s win at Ampthill yesterday might have kickstarted some confidence and I think Hartpury will win comfortably.
Coventry 0-5 Bedford. Let’s face it. Coventry are to date this season’s under-achievers. Bedford’s backs will run in four tries or more and seal a victory.
Ealing 5-1 Ampthill. It breaks my heart to predict this. One possible bright note is that Ampthill do pick up bonus points.
Cornish Pirates 3-3 Doncaster. I really cannot pick a winner here and it has the makings of being a classic.

Nottingham v Jersey 1 - 5 (I think Jersey will bag the bonus try win but Nottingham will make them work for it)
Hartpury v Richmond 5 - 1 (Hartpury seem to have found their mojo)
Coventry v Bedford 1 - 4 (Shocked by Cov - the injury list must be grim calling Bedford based on Cov recent form)
Ealing v Ampthill 5 - 0 (Sorry Amps but the Trailfinders will want to reassert their authority)
Cornish Pirates v Doncaster 1 - 4 (riding on the crest of a wave the Knights will hold this close fought battle - although could just as easy go the way of the Pirates as they are class).

Nottingham v Jersey 1 - 5 - Jersey firing on all-cylinders.
Hartpury v Richmond 4-1 - Richmond not
Coventry v Bedford 0 -5 - Coventry a shadow of its former self due to injury.
Ealing v Ampthill 5-0 - I suspect that the Ealing team will get another rocket up the backside, and come out firing in this one.
Cornish Pirates v Doncaster 4-1 - What an incredibly tasty fixture. I'll be paying to stream this. I think Pirates hold serve at the Mennaye.

15 out, we're told, although one played his first game of the season on Sat, so maybe it's only fourteen now?
We seem to have at least two debutants (DRs and or Academy boys) every game, so continuity is non-existent.
Still, it's a dead rubber for most sides, and I'd rather still have a club going into next season, by which time the ground build-out should have commenced.
Whether we'll have any fans left by then is quite another question.

I see absolutely everyone writing off Ampthill's chances away to Ealing this Saturday. I mirror Donnyknightman's view. Keep doing it.

The only issue here is that Donny might just have a better chance of a win than the As

Feel we’ve chosen a bad week to play Cov. Looks like they’ve got a lot of their injured players back and they’ll be fired up for this after last week. Their league position is a bit of a red herring atm because the team out for tomorrow is a top half team. I fear they’ll turn us over. Our centres are also considerably weaker when Litchfield is unavailable.

starting Fifteen for Ealing vs. Ampthill: This is a 'you screwed up, all change' line up. I genuinely don't know much about several of the players such as Little and Massyn. I'm worried about how long club captain Rayn Smid will be out injured, as he's replaced this weekend. Willis and Burns are always an exciting pairing, so I'm glad to see them, and thrilled to see Will Davis back in the 23. Ealing are in an odd place, with quite a number of recruits from New Zealand and South Africa only joining in the last few weeks. I hope they make an impact, but don't disrupt team chemistry too much.

Yes Gerg. Maybe a separate thread called for ?

Poor game management from Bedford today.  Several kickable penalties passed over, which would have won the match.  Coventry brilliantly denied Bedford possession when they were down to thirteen players. When Bedford did find some opportunities, they messed up.  Too many penalties given away.

To the Bedford 'fans', who are glad they didn't come to Coventry, because their side gave away too many penalties, thanks for not attending, and grow up.

To be clear, we had a premiership referee who punished both teams, and particularly with sin-bins was harsher on the home side. Even the Bedford Twitter feed was puzzled by his definition of a high tackle against Coventry.

To the Bedford supporters who did attend, and made a noise, thanks for coming, joining in, and supporting your team.

At 83 minutes it was 15-7 and a 4-0 result. With that try, I suspect every Coventry supporter was just hoping we couyld get through the final moments without Birthday Boy Will Maisey getting a chance to kick a penalty.
As it was, Bedford offended, and Fenner checked time with the referee, before putting the ball into the grandstand, for the certainty of the win.

In may not have been for the purist, but with 4 yellow cards to Bedford's 1, to keep them out when down to 13 men was a monumental effort & just reward at the final whistle.

12-7 at the break. Donny dominant in 1st 20, the penalty count must have been 8-1 at one stage & 2 Pirates binned, so visitors probably disappointed not to be more than 7 ahead at that point. But then hosts roared back, scoring 2 close range tries to lead. They couldn’t manage another right on HT altho Donny #9 binned just before the break. Visitors will play towards Newlyn end with appreciable wind at their backs in 2nd half…

I think it was the Donny scrum half sent to bin just before half time. Wind in Donny's favour second half but they will be down a man for first 8 mins or so. Brilliant streaming quality - easily worth the £7 fee but the commentators are Aarrrgh. Wish I had the technical skill to overlay Radio Cornwall. It should be a very close second half with both teams fancying their chances.

Quite. Mind you, if you follow the Cov Twitter feed you'd be little better off anyway.

That's why I've pointed it out as an option  - I'm keeping tabs on the Donny feed and it's pretty good and plenty posts (not just when there's a score)

BP try now to Pirates, after 3 close-range efforts they score a fine counter-attacking effort through the backs, with Wyatt making the key break & Kessell finishing by posts so suddenly it’s 26-7 with half an hour to play…

Pirates survive a 3rd sin-bin without further concession & the 19-pt lead should surely be a winning one with approx 15 min to go…

Despite my thoughts on the ref the better team by far is winning this game. Pirates have been much better in terms of putting good phases together. Donny have barely strung a good attack together in the second half

I thought Sir was ok & certainly didn’t feel his decisions especially favoured one side over t’other. Donny need to look at themselves - when the ref awards at least 15, perhaps as many as 20 penalties against your opponents & sends 3 of them to the bin, & yet you can only manage one score in 80 minutes, you are under-performing, albeit that Pirates deserve great credit for both their defence & ability to take scoring chances…

Felt the stream was decent value for 7 quid…

Do you know what, you’re right. Donny just made far too many basic errors. I enjoyed the stream. I actually had it on without the commentary. The picture quality and camera angles were excellent. It definitely was worth buying, albeit my enjoyment was slightly dulled by Donny’s performance!. The first 20 minutes was where we lost that game, just nowhere near clinical enough. 2 man advantage and all the territory and yet only one try. I thought we really lacked any attacking rhythm today. Even with two men less early on Pirates were comfortable in defence.

We were shocking - Pirates deserve the win - we have a lot of questions to answer about why we didn’t perform in any area - 29 unanswered points…..? Only us to blame

The ref was dreadful and completely inconsistent. No one could work out what the second yellow card early in the first half was for.
A succession of penalties given away by Donny in Naughty Boys Corner late in the first half yet no cards. In the second half, in the same corner, Caleb Montgomery carded after being on the field for less than a minute, for a first offence at a line out and mall.
Head high tackle on Pirate runner late in second half led to penalty but no conversation with offender, contrasting with early first half yellow for Kiri Kiri for the same offence.
I’d be interested to see what the officials’ observer thought.
I thought Donny were very disappointing after their heroics of last week and it was, in the end, a comfortable five pointer for us.
Great to see our captain Nico de Battista back for his first appearance of the season after a lengthy injury.

The succession of penalties given up by Donny late in 1st half was punished by a YC to DK scrum-half…

So it was , my mistake. Doesn’t obviate the comparison with the speed of Montgomery’s card though.

Fully agree with all of this imo the ref was generally clear in his decision making and always impartial.. These two teams are still the most likely to make Ealing work hard for promotion but the penalty count was frankly woeful for both sides. Indiscipline was a huge factor in Pirates defeat at St Peter but in the second half with that wind in their backs Donny didn't have the forwards or game plan to turn that indiscipline into points. Stream quality was excellent for £7 but happy to pay a few quid more if they could upgrade the commentary.

P.S. the second yellow card was for a head high tackle - unfortunately the guy who was carded was the second tackler so the tackled player was on his way down. It was the correct decision as it was still the tacklers responsibility to be safe in the tackle.

I do not think any of the YC decisions were wrong - the Donny scrum half got the team penalty card

So head high tackles are an immediate yellow card except for the Donny high tackle late in the second half, penalised but no card?
Come on!
I’m not having a go at the Knights, I’m persisting in the view that the ref was inconsistent, as well as highly intolerant at the breakdown.

I wasn't impressed by the officiating, but you have to try to manage it somehow. I don't think I've ever seen a team concede 21 penalties and three yellow cards but keep the opposition down to one try and win with a BP.
The Pirates forwards were brilliant and the defence was rock solid. The, when a bit of space opened up the backs began to show what they can do. This team is coming together nicely.
I reckon the Donny guys suffered, especially in the second half, from their massive efforts last week and understandably ran out of steam a bit.

I understand what you are saying but the impacts and points of contact I think were why the calls were made differently. The Cornish card was a shoulder to the front side of the head (close to square in the face) the Donny was high and from behind and an arm. Not sure if that influenced things. TBH if he carded him I would have thought ok fair enough

In may not have been for the purist, but with 4 yellow cards to Bedford's 1, to keep them out when down to 13 men was a monumental effort & just reward at the final whistle.
I will be interested to read Bedford's match report.Emoticons

It was basically we couldn’t take our chances, which sounded like it was down to your defence, I’d expect us to score at least a couple of tries against 13. Most common theme was the number of penalties we gave away, and can I be absolutely clear, I’m not blaming the officials, and I wasn’t there so can’t give my own opinion (too cold, so I decided not to travel). The players who were interviewed after were really disappointed with their performance and the number of pens they gave up.

Im fairly sure that John (Cov Kid 42) knows the story of the game quite well, being at the game, and doing the commentary for the BBC and all.

Having actually been at the game I can tell you that Cov probably had more chances with the line in sight than Bedford.  But for last ditch tackles from both defences, the score could well have been in the 30s for both sides.
As for the penalties, sometimes these are down to opposition pressure you know...

I appreciate the compliment - I was kind of returning it with reference to the defence of both sides.  It's just a bit of a bug bear of mine when supporters, coaches etc talk about penalties being 'given away' as though the opposition had nothing to do with it.
Both sides will play better and I'm sure it will be a different story at G.R.  I hope to be there - no matter the weather... Wink
