At the AGM, we were told that the Board had done some research and found that at least half of the clubs in the league charge for entry, and the price ranged from £5 to £10. I've paid £10 to watch London Irish at L5 in the past. Personally I'm not in favour, but given the increased cost base (primarily travel, plus energy bills - we don't pay players!) I can understand the rationale.

We don't. We tried that one before.
It didn't work.
Last season, we paid £5 to get into London Irish Wild Geese.
It was disguised as a 'raffle ticket'.

Why do we in Rugby sell ourselves short and think the product we put on display does not warrant people paying to watch? It is the norm to pay to watch in Football at far lower levels than what we are talking about, and yes I know we are very different sports, but we should not be afraid to mirror some of their practices. It does not have to be about paying players....as we can all work out, a 100 people paying £5 isnt going to make many players rich! To me it is recognising the effort done by clubs and the lads that put on a bloody good afternoons entertainment. From my experience at my club, the initial decision to charge was concerning but gates did not drop, and in fact some people commented that they stayed away as they thought it was "private members only" but because we charged they could now come and watch.

I think raffle tickets are exempt from vat, where as gate receipts are taxable.

When we first reached the dizzy heights of level 6, dragging ourselves out of the chip shop leagues we were surprised to be charged at away games. This would have been 12 years ago if I remember correctly. We introduced a small charge which ballooned up to £5 when we first rocketed up to level 5. Thatās probably 8 years ago and itās still £5, it gets you safe parking and a little brochure/programme. We still donāt pay players to play for our Club.

We don't pay our players nor do we pay our coaches, we tried that donkeys years ago and the club nearly went jugs up ! I remember when my boy was playing for the club and for several seasons trying to ask for £3 for a program that let you into the stand on match days! Blimey it was murder I can tell you! We haven't got a " money man" but just look at where we are without all of that, we get a decent crowd on a Saturday who are very thirsty and chuck a fair few quid behind the bar and our superb clubhouse is hired out regularly Don't get me wrong I'd love it for our players and coaches to get a few quid, they deserve it....but it just ain't there to be had, what boils my pee is when some club's say they don't pay but we all know they do by various "pretend" coach methods etc. Anyway I digress If we tried to charge £7.50 for people to get into hooks lane then you'd get told to "F" off... or something similarly spicey

I'd say that we're probably the biggest and best example of the perils of living beyond your means, hence why we don't pay our players now - although the DoR is remunerated (the limit was £10k at L6, not sure if it increases at L5). I'm not going to get into a forensic discussion of our P&L, but I would be very surprised if we're the only club in the league charging for entry this year.

Quite surprised by this discussion. In the north weāve paid to watch games for years. Iād say average is £5 even at level 6 and 7.

I obviously can't vouch for clubs asking for money in the North being the fact that you can't really get any further south than my club Havant , unless you want to swim to the channel islands!! but I ain't paid a penny anywhere for years at level 6 and below But it looks like level 5 is gonna be different...Will be fun trying to dodge paying though

I love this 'I know more about what's going on at your club than you do'. Frankly, I don't give a hoot who pays players and who doesn't, as long as they're living within their means - I don't want another club to go through what we've been through, as most clubs don't have the support base to enable them to rebuild the way that we have. And it annoys me that I have to keep clarifying our amateur status, especially for those who think that the only reason their teammates are dropping down a level is because they're getting paid to do so, or that winning promotion is proof that you pay players.

National League matches will go ahead unless a pitch inspection, under the existing RFU Rules, deems the pitch unplayable.

I can only assume this is because of the dry weather and hosepipe ban affecting hard pitches ,but even so, surely this is a bit early to predict the weather in 3 to 4 weeks time...or at any stage in England?

The issue is not just about the pitchss on Sept 3rd ;some clubs will not have been able to play any pre season friendlies

Yes, itās the dry weather and lack of rain. Ironically our main pitch has been relaid with a sprinkler system this summer but the grass growth has been restricted so we are cancelling anything due before 10th September. We have 2 other pitches that have had drainage put in them and the grass has yet to grow back, 2 more which have not been watered and are like concrete. Our new 6th pitch has been delayed until the ground is soft enough to dig!!

That's probably for the best as those with 4G pitches (or their friendly opponents) would be at a bit of an advantage over those who had no pre-season

I was wondering, looking at the lower leagues, it seems that Jersey Athletic have done a London Irish/London Welsh and split from their parents to become a legally separate club and are positioned in Counties 1 Hampshire (level 7 in old money). I wonder if they are there because of the Reds' Hampshire RFU membership or if in future, they will do a Guernsey and use Gatwick Airport as their "home" ground for geographical allocation purposes.

Maidenhead edged the first half and then ran away with it in the final quarter. Their forwards were tiny - I reckon even after our openside was sent off our pack probably still outweighed theirs - and we completely dominated them in the scrums but lacked the imagination to do anything with the possession. And our bulk didn't reallly help us in the latter stages, when fitness became an issue, falling off loads of tackles. Maids ran good lines (not surprising with Will Greenwood as Attack Coach) but it was like a training drill by the end. Quick and nimble on the 4G but I think they'll struggle in three inches of mud. A rude awakening for Welsh, sets up a bottom of the table clash with RWB next week.

Correct me if I'm wrong but maidenhead's pitch is now over ten years old and on our visit last season it looked worn out in places a fair few of our lads said it had hardly any give at all in it !

A good day under the shadow of the Kew gardens pagoda at London welsh yesterday (managed to swerve the £7.50 entrance fee and £2.50 for the programme by arriving on the team coach as per usual) Thanks to michael for the hospitality and to Terwyn for some stories of previous games in the early nineties between us and welsh, also for showing us around the trophy room. (some great history there) . Some good banter with their lot afterwards and a few beers The highlight of the day for me was our rolling maul, welsh couldn't cope with it at all and also coming away with a BP win

London welsh were bound to find a league where they found it tough, especially after the successive promotions they've had, they gave us a good game at their place and I expect to see them improve We haven't been in much trouble in our matches so far apart from that first half at Brighton where it took 40 minutes for us to get off the bus ! Our game on Saturday against bottom of the table Wooton Basset was another game where we looked comfy especially in the second half even though we had a ref who did his best to become invisible by wearing the same colours as us, however he certainly made himself known by being a tad yellow card happy throughout the game Wimbledon look strong going on their results so far, but it's much too early to predict anything yet Looking forward to some carrot cruncher accents at Oxford Harlequins this weekend, never been there before so it's another newbie to add to the list and hopefully we come back with a win

A great day at Oxford Quins yesterday, we really hit the ground running and the game was all but over at half time, we were a joy to watch. Credit to quins for not giving up and in the second half their backs moved the ball around quickly but our defence was on top form and we were more than a match for their effortsIt was an honour to be presented with the biggest bleeding carrot I have ever seen in my life by Ron their club president in response to my "carrot crunching" comments in an earlier post, I'm certain he wanted it shoved somewhere the sun don't shine!! But I disappointed him by eating it instead Also thanks to Jack.. aka " Mike hunt" for the superb hospitality, that man can talk the hind legs off of 15 donkeys, no wonder his Mrs went away for the week Look forward to the return game at the lane, where I won't be calling them carrot crunchers!!

An eagerly awaited game at the lane yesterday was totally and utterly ruined by a stunningly bad referee Wimbledon are a very good outfit, but when a referee dishes out four yellow cards you effectively play half a game of rugby with 14 men. Admittedly one of those cards was justified after a high tackle on their winger but we all new it wasn't gonna be our day when our scrum half was blatantly taken out off the ball after kicking ahead with a certain try on the cards and nothing was given All in all a frustrating day which left the majority of a large crowd stunned

It's amazing how many people can't tell the difference between a comment on posts on message boards and a comment on a specific game.

An eagerly awaited game at the lane yesterday was totally and utterly ruined by a stunningly bad referee Wimbledon are a very good outfit, but when a referee dishes out four yellow cards you effectively play half a game of rugby with 14 men. Admittedly one of those cards was justified after a high tackle on their winger but we all new it wasn't gonna be our day when our scrum half was blatantly taken out off the ball after kicking ahead with a certain try on the cards and nothing was given All in all a frustrating day which left the majority of a large crowd stunned |
He was that bad he gave you a try that wasnāt a try, so a birdie tells me.

Yes he did, our fullback had his foot in touch our touch judge flagged it up but the ref ignored it and gave the try....we all laughed of course!

OK here is a post from a South Central club - there are even fewer comments on that board! Think people have got out of the habit of this site and splitting the league hasn't helped much. From our league it looks like a dog fight between Wimbledon, Camberley and Havant all of whom are stronger sides than last year. Wimbledon seem to just have the edge at the moment but we hit a wall last year so we shall see - it was good to see that last Saturday we navigated the potential banana skin that Sutton & Epsom often are for us. What are people thinking about the new league structure? We used to look at Nat 2 South as the promised land of exciting trips to the West Country but Nat 2 East just looks like London 1 as was.
A bit underwhelming?

Hi Boaty, am sure Havant Tony is doing his best to elicit comments on your board. Normally have a good drink with him when we meet, and I do have a look at the results of your league. Am not surprised at all to see Wimbledon there, having watched you annihilate us in the pre-season friendly with what I thought was a much changed set of players compared to the league matches last season. Quite a few Southern hemisphere accents flying around that day. The new League structure could never please every club and must have been very difficult to administer. It has certainly provided the opportunity to play against and visit new clubs, which I particularly enjoy. It may mean a bit of extra travelling time but that is partly offset by the reduction of fixtures. Midland and Northern clubs may well disagree on this. I also like the introduction of the Cup games for levels 5 and below, which are non-compulsory but which I hope are well-represented - A bit of a throwback to the old days of County Cup winners being offered a chance to progress and get some juicy fixtures. Am probably in the middle, neither underwhelmed or overwhelmed.

I agree level 4 has been diluted in quality with the introduction of a number of teams at that level, I do agree reducing the number of games to 26 from 30 was the right thing to do, 30 game league with that travel and intensity was extremely challenging on the players.
I think level 4 in the South has lost a lot of kudos. For clubs in the South East, losing the trips to Bristol, Cornwall etc. the league has lost a lot of what made it such a challenge and enjoyable. Its has become an extension of regional rugby as opposed to National League IMO. Preference would've been to reduce the league to 14 sides but kept the boundaries the same, decrease numbers and increase quality.

Your not wrong there. The jump used to be from Nat3ldn to Nat 2. In a couple of seasons it will be between Nat 2 and Nat 1.

Regional 1 South Central is definitely not as strong as last year's London South East premier but having said that I'm thoroughly enjoying it dodging the never ending trips anti clockwise on the M25 has been good with 6 new clubs to visit Wimbledon are the best side we've faced so far, and we have been run close by London welsh and maidenhead away from home and had a mare at Brighton so I feel there's a few twists and turns to come but I'm confident we will be at the right end of the table at the end fighting for promotion Good to see westcombe Park doing well in regional One South East but quite surprised by Hertford and Medway's positions!
Not quite sure Sevenoaks and North Walsham will agree with the national leagues being watered down as their position in the table suggests otherwise, Dorking on the other hand are flying. The National League's YouTube channel is worth a watch, would be good if they could do the same for Regional 1 but I think that is gonna fall on deaf lugholes !!

I think that jump is already there. The Esher coaches were confident about our ability to cope at National 1 with the team that won promotion. The facts are not supporting that confidence! Nat 1 is tougher than it used to be.

Possibly due to the Premiership standard rising and full of foreigners thus forcing better players down a league and then having a domino effect downwards ?

I have been surprised at the results in region 1 south central. London Welsh have failed to find the form of previous seasons, having pushed Havant close at home they went down to a big defeat to Camberley?
Havant, Wimbledon and Camberley look to be breaking away.
With only the top team being promoted, itās going to be an interesting season. Havant have to travel to both Camberley and Wimbledon yet - does that make them least favourite to win it?

"LEAST FAVOURITE TO WIN IT"....That'll do me, nothing worse than being toted as Favourites, I'd be happy for us to bear that cross of motivation until the fat bird grunts WIMBLEDON are a good side but beatable ( just ask Camberley!) a very good move off of a lineout led to their winning score apart from that we matched them in what was a very tight game CAMBERLEY never got near our line for the whole game at our place Both of those are gonna be tough places to visit ...can't wait

Not sure about the first part of that question! Certainly I have noticed that the last two teams we played - Cinderford and Cambridge - were way more experienced than the Esher team. We celebrated someone making their 50th appearance against Cinderford who averaged 70 appearances and had 3 over 150, all at National 1. Last week the Cambridge side had a similar level of experience and their newer players had all come from the Championship or other National 1 Clubs. There are a lot of good, experienced players in National 1 and we need a larger share of them!

Wow, some close results today! Oxford quins pushed hard by Banbury. Havant dropping another bonus point away from home, and Wimbledon winning a close one against Bracknell.
Any news from those games?
I enjoyed my trip to Brighton to watch Welsh throw away another half time lead!

Totally agree with this appraisal. Nat 2 South should have been dropped to being a 14 team league but otherwise left alone - the trips to Redruth, Barnstable, Cinderford etc were great fun. And I think level 5 could still handle being 14 team leagues.

So I was having a good chat with a friend, who happens to be a supporter of Bournemouth. We was discussing the teams in the league and couldnāt agree if they Camberley pack was any good?!
I watched Brighton give them a good game and wasnāt massively impressed!
Thoughts?

I think Camberley are the most well-rounded team I've seen in several years. Threats across the entire fifteen, sharp backs, ultra-effective lineout and seriously powerful scrum. Maybe they had an off-day at Brighton

Hope it's OK for an insurgent from the East Side to join in.
Havant 5 v 0 Bracknell, (Tony would not be best pleased if I predicted anything other than this)LWelsh 5 v 1 Bournemouth. Welshies getting to grips with this league but won't be easy, Maids 5 v 0 S and E - On a rock hard playing surface it could be A and E as well Quin's 0 v 4 Camberley, Can't see Camberly losing this, but expecting a close game RWB. 1 v 4 Bton, Another close call Dons 5 v 0 Banbury, A no brainer, just like most Saturday nights out.
