Week One 1st / 2nd November
There are some tasty fixtures coming up - issues include DR (regrettably) but main interest, for me, is Caldy at home to Newcastle. Caldy are quite capable of turning over higher clubs but then Newcastle went and beat Exeter. Caldy's performance will be interesting, notwithstanding their bottom position especially after their decent showing against Coventry. Saints fixture also looks tasty - but it's Premiership clubs so doesn't count )
Pirates v Exeter (possible DR issues??)
Doncaster v Sale (testing for Doncaster)
Northampton v Leicester (home win)
Nottingham v Coventry (Cov looking to make a point)
Ampthill v Bath (good gate £ for Amps as Bedford are far away)
Caldy v Newcastle Falcons (chance for Caldy)
London Scottish v Harlequins (possible DR issues)
Hartpury RFC v Gloucester (possible DR issues)
Bristol v Bedford Blues (tough nut for Blues to crack)
Ealing Trailfinders v Saracens (Ealing have point to make)

From a Chinnor point of view, waiting to hear how much compensation Chinnor and Cambridge will received for their loss of income after being shafted...........
Shame on all the Championship clubs for gleefully taking the money..........

I feel your pain and think it's a disgrace the way Chinnor and Cambridge were treated. But this is the reality of where we are.

Looking at the fixtures above it's going to be an extraordinary day at the tills for a few Championship clubs. Not sure what parking Ampthill have in place.

Same as usual; zero
It is also not a town blessed with large amounts of car parking
Should be an interesting day for residents

Can't remember the number(s), but there was a perfectly decent bus service from Flitwick Station, and I believe Bedford too, for those prepared to devise their own park 'n' ride options, or indeed to train the whole way (2' 56" from Bath Spa according to Trainline)

Of these two teams, 11 from both sides have played for Leicester Lions in past couple of years(one when they were in Nat 2). Nice to see Nat 1 is involved in the players development, sure some other clubs will have also had some of these young players turn out for them. Four of the Tigers squad have played in Nat 1 this season and one of the Saints players played for Lions last week, will be a big step up for him. 15 George Pearson *

I remember when Will Wand was playing for Cambridge Exiles before he cemented a fist team shirt.
Tom Whiteley had a couple of games with us.
Archie Vanes had five.

Chiefs vs. Pirates is a sellout. So that is 3000 tickets and hospitality for Prem cup vs. Probably 500 for a champ cup fixture. If I estimate £25 per head on average (ticket, bar takings), then that is am extra £62.5k of revenue for Pirates that has cost the RFU and PRL nothing. I approve.

Alas Scots don't have full use of the RAG (being tenants) but should be a decent enough crowd to bring in some income. Richmond have opened up a 'pre match hospitality venture' for England matches, which is a good move for them and should generate some ££ (I just hope our London Scottish Piper doesn't drown out any speakers or cause too much of a distraction for those attending on Saturday )

Weird that LS v Quins game is Sat, 2pm, 70 mins b4 the ENG/NZ game down the road at 'Ally Pally' kicks off. I guess Friday may have been out as Quins played the previous Sunday, and Sunday as they play the following Friday, but you'd think an early or late KO might have resulted in a few more attendees...

Nottingham 15 v 34 Coventry (0 v 5)A harder fought and more competitive game than the final score would suggest, but largely dominated by the referee's whistle with a balanced but very high and pretty evenly balanced number of penalties.(30).
I'm glad to see the 5 points to nil, but somewhat concerned by the state of the Coventry fly half Richman, seen on crutches after he was taken off, and the failure to return from an HIA of Coventry high-scoring winger Hutler following a hands-free charge head-to-head tackle when another wise clear run to the line beckoned. This did result in a red card for the Nottingham player, and could reasonably have been given as a penalty try. Hopefully both these key players will recover and be available for the next round. Equally hopefully the disciplinary panel will ensure that the defender is not available for some time.

Ryan Hutler did return after his HIA i gather Tommy Mathews is back in training which might ease the fly half situation given as you say Liam Richman was seen on crutches. Pity there are still refs who believe the crowd have come to see them perform !

Ealing 29 (BP) - Saracens19 (3T) FT - Ealing just gave up one of the all time stupidest tries that I have ever seen. With a wing flying downfield for a sure try, he passed inside and the man was hauled down. At the next phase the ball went loose and Saracens hacked it down field for a length of the pitch try. Ealing have had at least two tries go begging in the last 5.

Meaningless?
Did this match move the world off its axis? No. Did it change the fortunes of Saracens? No. Did it improve Ealing future prospects of Premiership rugby? No.
But …
Did 2000+ have a good afternoon out? Did 46 professional players bust a gut for themselves, their teammates, their fans? Did Saracens fans turn to their Ealing neighbours and congratulate them on their victory? Could Ealing have done more than beat the 23 chosen to oppose them? Did Ealing improve their chances of progressing in this competition? Does the Championship not gain some vicarious kudos from this match? …
Meaningless? Shame on you.

Thanks for the correction John. I must have missed that in the very busy commentary.
It's tricky keeping track, especially with the 6'2 ratio of forwards to backs on the bench when Coventry needed at least three spare backs this time with injuries and yellow cards.

Interesting how the results have gone especially with many of the Championship clubs losing their Prem DR's for the cup and it shows in the results The championship clubs who have little or no DR's doing best. Not sure of the logic of the cup going forwards if that situation continues especially if the RFU want Prem clubs to have 15 DR's. What happens in the Cup then when effectively Prem Clubs team faces their Championship clubs
