Evening,
I have heard that Darlington MP have gone into administration.
Does anyone know if this is the case? There seems to be very little information online about this. Hopefully just rumours.

No that is not the case from what was said today. It’s not my place to put on a public forum. I’m sure that they will put something out but meetings only happened on Wednesday so still pretty raw

From what I gather it’s something with the ground?

I didn’t get any details other than they have plans in place for the rest of the season. Perhaps to get best information talk to the club otherwise you are going to get possibly duff information

I heard a similar rumour on Tuesday from someone who normally knows what they are talking about. I hope in this instance they are wrong.

DMP have not gone into administration. There was an EGM on Wednesday where the clubs problems were explained. The club will fulfil its remaining fixtures and then regroup for Nat 2 next season!

That’s great news and very reassuring! Thank you!
Will the arena still be home? Would make sense to move away but not sure where else could accommodate?

The Arena will still be used next season. One massive problem we have is expenses for away games....most require overnight stays, some 2 nights. Plymouth costs, I've been told, but not from the horses mouth, between £8,000 and £10,000. We would love to see Nat 1 go north and south as this is the only way to sustains a decent standard of Rugby in the North East. Newcastle are haemorrhaging players and with a £40million debt.....things in the North East are looking bleak! But as usual the RFU just bury their overpaid heads in the sand!

Every year the same story reappears about the Football Club coming back to the arena and a ground share happening.
Obviously it wouldn’t be ideal but I’m not sure why that hasn’t come about as would surely bring in a good chunk of cash when the ground would otherwise be empty.

From a purely personal point of view hope the football does not come back because of traffic etc. Regardless the Arena would need a lot of money spending to be able to reopen the three sides which are currently closed.

I think I’ve heard every rumour going about the Arena.
The sporting village etc proposed seems to be completely dead in the water. There was always talk of making the ground smaller and using it for the football but even demolishing a couple of sides would cost hundreds of thousands no doubt for little real benefit.

I do so enjoy the rugby rumour mill. In the past two weeks I’ve been told directly and indirectly so many conflicting stories about DMP that it makes my head spin.

Players can come and go as they wish. The RFU can't prevent someone leaving if they want to.

If they’re under contract and the club breaks it’s part of the contract by not paying them they can’t then insist they continue to play for the club.

The rumour at the minute which seems to be the most apparent is that the ground is going to be demolished and something built in its place. Are there any ground requirements for National 2?

Yes, not great at all.
Does anyone know the biggest defeat at this level as I really worry for the rest of this season. Obviously doesn’t matter long term if the club survives but I really worry there will be some dark days in the next couple of months. Will take some strong characters to stick it out when things get tough.

Going back a few years I remember Manchester getting totally smashed when they lost a load of players, can't remember which league it was in though.

Esher beat Manchester 148-0 in 2009. Not quite sure what division this was but it must have been a national and not a regional one.

It was the first season on the current National 1, the first match at Manchester.
Manchester had run out of money the previous season and only won two games.
Esher were among five sides relegated to reduce the old National 1 to the 12 team Championship.
I am told Esher had a parachute payment, so kept most of their squad. Manchester had none of the professional players, and had a very inexperienced squad.
Esher only won 119-0 at Esher
Manchester lost all 30 games, scoring 114 points and conceding 2626. They also lost all thirty games the following season, in N2N almost as badly. I cannot now find the North Premier fixtures, I believe Manchester did finally win a match, but suffered another relegation.
Esher were promoted back to the Championship, but only lasted one season.

I hope things turn around for DMP. Me and my dad were very surprised to get the result we did away to DMP this year.
If the club own the ground then demolishing it and selling the land off maybe a good revenue stream and help the club out in the future.
The football team play just around the corner, could a temporary ground share work out?

It is indeed the greatest white elephant of the North East, and akin to the madness of King George to assume it would get anywhere near a quarter full, let alone to capacity. A good summary in that article.
Nevertheless I do wish DMP well, and hope that they can at least stay in the National Leagues following their likely relegation this season. Maintaining some top level rugby clubs in the North East must be a good thing for rugby in England.

The football club local to me, S/thorpe United were in a similar position to DMP - big money struggles. Their ground, Glanford Park is situated on the outskirts of town in a shopping area. S/thorpe were going to sell Glanford park for re development and move to a newer ground. I think this is still in the pipeline and would be a wise decision for them.
In DMP's position it would certainly make sense. A smaller ground more suited to national league rugby and some much needed cash in the bank to help sustain a great club.
I do hope things turn around for them.
EDIT - I just realised the forum has an auto correct on any swear words, not easy to spell the town in between Doncaster and Grimsby...

I Believe that the club is no longer a members club, but is owned by a businessman Ged Quinn. There is a company that owns the Arena but Mr Quinn resigned as director of that and the club 8 months ago.
The accounts for both look very sad indeed. Pretty sure the ground will be sold, but I thought there was a sporting covenant on any possible future sale, but may be wrong.

I’ve heard that an announcement is almost imminent. Strong speculation that the current stadium is going to be demolished. Land sold to a supermarket and in return a 6000 seater stadium will be built on the current footprint in return, this will then be shared with the football club. No idea what timescales will be but I imagine it will take a while for planning etc.

Does either club need 6,000 seats? Is there a risk it could be another - albeit smaller - white elephant?

From what I understand if the football club ever want to play in the football league their ground needs to have a 6000 capacity. I assume that’s why that number was arrived at. Think the football club get around 1800 for most matches and DMP probably around 700 on a good day.

You can play in the FA Premiership in a 5000 capacity stadium, apparently. It's similar for the Football League too. Technically it's 4,000 capacity, but increasing to 5,000 (with 1,000 seats) by the end of the first season. This must increase to 2,000 seats after 3 years. Having said this, 6,000 is more typical in League 2 and Darlington FC are only 2 divisions away from this level.
