London Scottish 4 - 1 Bedford Blues - Could be tight, Blues desperate for points
Nottingham 1 - 5 Ealing Trailfinders - Quality should out Newcastle Falcons 5 - 0 Doncaster Knights - Only one winner Hartpury RFC 4 - 1 Jersey Reds - Pury confident at home Ampthill 1 - 5 Coventry - Too much quality in Cov side. Cornish Pirates 5 - 0 Yorkshire Carnegie - Despite the return of P Davies I cant see him working his magic just yet unless he has secretly added 10 Antipodeans? There's an idea!!!!!!!!!!

That's raising Leeds game by an unbelievable amount to get a massive 1 point away from home (their 2nd of the season)

One thing they haven’t learned is how to make the well draining chalk of Cooper’s Hill into mud.

Predictions: London Scottish 4 v 1 Bedford - I think Bedford will be better after a break but I think Scottish should win at home. Nottingham 5 v 2 Ealing - a good game this one but Ealing have struggled at Lady Bay in the last 2 seasons with, in my opinion, better sides than they have now. Notts to sneak it. Newcastle 4 v 1 Doncaster - Donny are in better shape than they've been for a while so I think they'll give Falcons a good game. in truth I'm being very optimistic in giving Donny 1 point but I just hope we do ourselves proud and compete for the full 80. Hartpury 4 v 1 Jersey - very tough one to call. Hartpury have been good at home this year and Jersey haven't hit top gear yet. Ampthill 1 v 4 Coventry - I think Coventry should eke out a narrow win here but it won't be easy. Ampthill are an improving outfit. Cornish Pirates 5 v 0 Leeds - so will we see a Phil Davies effect this weekend?. I doubt it to be honest. Carnegie may be harder to beat but I think Pirates will win with a bit to spare, maybe by 20-25 points.

When we played Hartpury at home and only won 6-0 I thought they had a good defense.Looking at the league table I can see why. Only Newcastle and Pirates have a better defensive record than Hartpury. Just an FYI for when you make your predictions.

London Scottish 4 - 1 Bedford Blues - will be interested to see if Peter Lydon gets an immediate run out against his original English club. Scottish to pip this one at the RAG.
Nottingham 2 - 5 Ealing Trailfinders - Ealing have never won at Lady Bay, but I think that the coaching staff will have them hyped up for this one, so they won't come out of the blocks as stale as they have sometimes in the past. Could be predicting more in hope than expectation. Newcastle Falcons 5 - 0 Doncaster Knights - Newcastle have been devastating at home. Hartpury RFC 1 - 5 Jersey Reds - Reds backs to break through the stout Hartpury line. Ampthill 4 - 1 Coventry - Battle of the new boys with Ampthill defending their home pitch. They've looked very well-drilled, and they seize every opportunity with both hands. Cornish Pirates 5 - 0 Leeds Yorkshire Carnegie Tykes - Maybe Leeds would get a point with George Ford, but not with Joe.

London Scottish 4 Bedford Blues 1 ... Hopefully the break will have given Bedford time to get some injured players fit again. The break couldn't have come at a worse time for LS following their fine win in Jersey. Tight home win I think. Could be a good one to watch.
Nottingham 0 Ealing Trailfinders 5 ... ET too big and powerful for Nottingham.
Newcastle Falcons 5 Doncaster Knights 0 ... Nothing to lose here for Donny, so they will give it a really good go, but can't see anything other than a regulation bp win for the Falcons.
Hartpury University 1 Jersey 4 ... I was really impressed with how Hartpury defended in Jersey and this could be a tight game to the last. However, Jersey's bench to have the bigger impact and a tight away win.
Ampthill 1 Coventry 4 ... Could be a much tighter game than you would think and if Ampthill's defence can keep things tight, then they may have a shout to win it at the end.
Cornish Pirates 5 Yorkshire Carnegie 0 ... 50+ not out for Pirates.
Great to be back to competitive rugby again. Good luck everyone.

Ealing Trailfinders team to play Nottingham on Friday 10th January at Lady Bay in the Greene King IPA Championship: I'm pleased to see Elijah Niko return to the wing, I think his physicality creates real mismatches. A strong starting second row as well. I'm not thrilled to see Johnson in the squad as I'm sure he'll allow a few more soft tries. Shingler and Hampson were very effective against Newcastle between the 22s, but struggled to finish. Hopefully they'll be more effective this week. Would be great to see someone like Paul Grant get on the field this year...

Scottish 4-0 Blues - At home Scottish by
10-12 points
Nottingham 4-1 Ealing Trailfinders - A close match that
could go either way
Falcons 5-0 Knights Banker which must give
Donny a good chance of a surprise win
Hartpury 2-2 Jersey - Although 4-1 either way probably more likely. The first six
rows of Jersey Royals planted in my small patch of St Ouens this morning for
anyone with an interest in such things.
Ampthill 5-2 Coventry - surely game of the week
between two well matched teams.
Cornish Pirates 1-4 Leeds It could happen.

Nottingham will need to have addressed the failings in the scrummage if we are to compete with anyone for the rest of the season. Coventry pushed us off our own ball so many times it was embarrassing.
Really hope we have used the three week break wisely. If that is sorted we are a good challenge for anyone.

I'm really chuffed that Ealing finally broke its curse at Lady Bay, but the Match Report from Ealing stated that they dominated the scrum, and felt aggrieved that no penalty try was forthcoming at the end of the first half. Given the comment above, did anyone who saw the match agree, or is the Match Report over-egging things? As Ealing had most of its top scrummagers on the pitch, I'd be interested in how they performed.

Tight in the table now with just 13 points between 2nd and 11th with just 5 between 2nd and 6th. Of course, Pirates still have a home game to come against YC and a win will see them 2nd.

https://www.ampthillrufc.com/1stxv-19-coventry-17-sat-jan-11-2020-championship/" rel="nofollow - Ampthill 19 Coventry 17, match report here
Played with a seriously strong quartering wind helping the visitors in the first half, Coventry played well, by comparison with September's drubbing, Amps played out of their skins.
The defensive performance in the first half and in the 8 minutes with 13 playing 15 was key, however, Cov's defence was equally good as A's had 4 or 5 sets of multiple phases in the red zone only scoring once.
Ampthill have come a long way in 4 months!

Jersey left a hatful of tries unscored in the first half and although they always seemed to dominate the collisions never looked to break the Hartpury defensive line which was exceptional all day. Hartpury played the conditions brilliantly in the second half and must be gutted to eventually lose the match with the final play. Having seen Jersey lose tight matches so often over the years a win away from home by a single point when your team don't play to their best form is always a great feeling. Same again next week against Pirates please.

Hartpury are obviously a very strong defensive team, Pirates could only manage two penalties against them in a 6-0 win at The Mennaye before Xmas.

full time score from the Mennaye today: Cornish Pirates 52 Yorkshire Carnegie 0 - this situation with Leeds is disgraceful. they're relying on loaning players from other clubs to put together a competitive side. the RFU should've put them out of their misery this summer. well done to Pirates on the win. I think Pirates are the 2nd best team in this league this season. they go onto 29 points, 8 behind Newcastle.

That's been the arrangement in recent seasons, starting from £75k for 2nd I think - or thereabouts. Not sure if the same applies this season...
Reds' win at Hartpury - yes, agree that we should definitely have put the result beyond doubt by half-time. And that Hartpury's defence was a major reason why that didn't happen. Thereafter it seemed the home team had done enough to edge it, but credit also to the Reds for grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck when it counted. Hartpury understandably devastated, and specifically unhappy about what they saw as a clear knock-on from the penultimate lineout. I didn't think it was that clear - highlights will be done this week so people can make up their own mind.
