Bit early but as I was looking who was playing whom next week

Some big games against some of the Top 4 contenders and also at the other end of the table.  Somehow Knights got 2 home games and Chinnor 2 away to start.

We will find out a lot more about Chinnor against Ampthill, which is always a tricky place to play.
Ealing have a tough test at Pirates. Whereas at the other end Caldy v Cambridge is a big one.

Friday
Pirates v Ealing Trailfinders

Saturday
Doncaster Knights v Nottingham
Hartpury v Scottish
Ampthill v Chinnor
Caldy v Cambridge
Coventry v Blues

It has but the matrix they use needs changing, there is no reason for it and I have never understood why you play the first game and last game of the season against the same team!

If every club had strict alternation of home and away games, the teams who were t home on the first week could never play one another. As in any week, the two teams both need to be at home, or both need to be away.

As a result, every club has to have two home games and two away games at some point in the season.
One club starts with two home games and one has to start with two away games.

Similarly, one club has to end the season with two home games, and one ends with two away games.

I realise that, but the season really doesn't have to start and end like that.
Biggest disappointment for Cov is the fact that there are no home games (three away) between 12/10 and 23/11.
That's poor - and avoidable.

Kimbo, at least you have games those weeks.
Some of us don't.
It is an artefact of there being two different competitions.

But you are right, you do not need to start and finish against the same team.
Indeed, the second half of the season could be in any order.
In fact, you do not need to play every before playing a side twice, so if there was a good reason to have the derby matches close together, you could.

Totally agree with you on the utter iniquity around the Prem Cup, but I will say that not all of the away games in that six week period are cup games.
We play Caldy away in the league.
Edited to add: ironically, you DO have a home game during the six week perio when Cov don't Wink

That's right. The RFU are notorious for their favoritism towards Ealing....or is is it that they are famous for their incompetence? One or the other.

I do like the recent team announcements from Bedford, openly stating how many loans they have in the matchday squad.

I think other teams including my own team Donny,  should do this.

5 in this week's squad for the blues
Donny playing 2

Confusion reigns this evening in Oxfordshire.
Are Chinnor away to Saracens in the Prem cup tomorrow or are they playing Ampthill in the Championship?
My understand was that a gentleman's agreement not to include anymore than 6 DRs in match day squads was reached between clubs, which seems to have gone straight out of the window down at Ampthill with their inclusion of 9 Saracens DRs in the starting line up and another 2 on the bench.
Are things really that bad down at Ampthill already, so early in the season that the inclusion of all of these DRs is on an "absolutely necessary" basis.

I can't help thinking that Ampthill are slightly hamstrung by the Welsh SRC (Championship equivalent) being better organised than it's predecessors.

This has removed a pool of players which Ampthill have done well out of in the past.

Pirates 1 - 4 Ealing - attritional in the mud and rain
Doncaster 5 - 1 Nottingham - think Nottingham will run 4 tries in
Hartpury 5 - 0 Scottish - can't see Scottish getting anything here and Hartpury were running Ealing close for a while
Ampthill 5 - 1 Chinnor - Try bonus for Chinnor
Caldy 4 - 1 Cambridge - Caldy didn't look great last week, but should still win
Coventry 5 - 2 Bedford - really wanted to say the other way but I think we are lacking a couple of players for the win.

My edit was fixing spelling!

What a finish. Pirates box kicked, and I think it would have been full-time if it had went off. Ealing then went through about five phases before the ball got spun wide to Rob Farrar, who ran the slowest final 20meters I have ever seen, and crashed over for the game winner.

Well done Ealing. Sign of a champion team managing to grind out the win and getting the 5 points even at the death. Toughest away day for them and will be glad to get it out the way early season. Long journey home, or will they stay over in Penzance tonight?

It is frustrating, especially for a newly promoted side like Chinnor who didn't expect to be playing a Sarries 2nd XV in week 2.

However, as you've seen a 'gentleman's agreement' doesn't really exist in the world of semi/fully pro rugby as there is too much at stake and so if the rules allow it, which in the case of DR numbers they do, then clubs will inevitably do whatever they need to do for a win. I don't agree with it but why wouldn't they I suppose. There is a real risk of losing any individual club identity by going down that path though.

Richmond found this out a couple of seasons ago when Scottish stacked their side (all within the rules) with Quins players in a must win game to decide who got relegated to Nat 1. Needless to say, Scottish prevailed that day and Richmond went down.

After last week's showing though, Chinnor will have enough to make it a decent close game today. Good luck to them.

For anyone who hasn’t seen Nick Easter’s tweet:

“ Thanks @AmpthillRufc for your support in allowing @ChinnorRFCThame to realise what it would have been like to play in the prem cup by fielding a zombie @saracens squad.  Earlier than expected but looking forward to it nonetheless. #champclubsupport #hugeappreciation”

I counted 9 sarries in the ampthill starting lineup and another on the bench.

🅰️ Good luck to Ampthill for their home clash with @Champrugby new boys Chinnor. Pleased to see a strong sprinkling of @Saracens dual-reg talent with Hadfield, Beaton, Sylvester, Pearce-Paul, Sodeke, Eke, Jackson, Hallett, Hall, Isaacs & Murphy in the 23. #SarriesFamily

Bedford doing their usual trick of turning up to BPA and looking like a team that have never played rugby before. Penalty count must be something like 12-2. We’ve got out of our half once. Another key injury to add to our ever growing injury list. But other than that, it’s going to plan.

A long way to go. However some at HQ might have to ponder…excluding teams from the cup…was it a sound idea?

The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.

6 blank weeks for Chinnor + Cambridge Confused
Maybe the numpties at the RFU think that they should play 6 friendlies against each other LOL

Congratulations to Nottingham on a great performance today. They got stuck into us and really disrupted our rhythm. A massive improvement is needed from Donny before Ealing next week - we looked off the pace. Nottingham were faster and sharper all over the pitch.
And the RFU is on the ball as usual.
When I looked, just now, they had Donny as having won by 30-14.
FFS.

And even The Rugby Paper league table shows Donny on 9 points, 2 wins!

Although they have the result correct. They evidently don't check.

I see in the Nottingham match report, Charlie Myall was mentioned, so although listed as a DR with Leicester Lions, I doubt we will see him this year, a player on the rise with an England U 20's elite squad place recently earnt, wish him well.

The stupidity in the RFU trying to wipe out local players with their DR rules they can be registered at multiple clubs

Leicester Tigers have formal arrangements with clubs within their RFU defined catchment area, this includes amongst others, Nottingham in the Championship and Leicester Lions who are the only Nat1 side in the area. This is I am told part of the player pathway to help players reach their full potential, eventually feeding into the National side for a few.
This is nothing new, Leicester Tigers have in the past loaned players to both these clubs, some players have stayed at Nottingham. Some who were at the Lions did go onto higher things, George Martin and Jack van Poortvleit both had a season at Lions in National 2 as part of their introduction into adult rugby from the academy.

Truly excellent performance & result for Cov; in honesty they made Bedford look very ordinary indeed. Mike Rayer & Co plenty to ponder.
Great pity their offy web site was, well, just Bedford, apart from one point of congratulations to the victors. No mention of the 7 Cov tries !Unhappy

No quite sure what you were expecting to see on the Bedford site John.

The report concedes that Coventry were better in all areas and says they were exceptionally well drilled and barely put a foot wrong.

Bedford do tend to show all tries in a match in their video highlights (when they manage to upload them) Wink

I might have missed it but is a prediction league still being run for the Champ this season, week 3 fixtures commencing tomorrow evening?
