I've noticed some signings and departures being posted for next season. Thought I'd start a new thread and let the 20/21 thread go into retirement if we can get this stickied?

Harry Casson has signed a contract extension at Ealing. these just get released in dribs and drabs, some were signed weeks and weeks ago and are not yet announced.

Being stable makes our retention policy much easier that it was a few years ago.

Now they have announced an extension for James Cannon......

Jeez I much prefer the way that Jersey did it.

Talking about Jersey how has Macauley Cook gone down there?

Experienced winger James Cordy-Redden (JCR for short) has signed a one year deal to bring him back for a sixth season. He has deceptively fast feet, is solid under the highball, but I worry that he lacks top end speed.

Angus Kernohan also re-signed. Has looked very dangerous, but at times doesnt play at full speed.

The Cornish Pirates have had a busy weekend announcing 3 new signings.
Young Cornish flanker Will Gibson has signed a one year contract and he is joined by two players from Dragons rugby 2nd row Ed Scragg and full back/fly half Carwyn Penny who have both represented Wales at under 20 level.

Bedford Blues can confirm that two of our longest serving current players, Will Carrick Smith and James Lennon, have left the club following the end of the 2021 Championship season.

With just under 150 cumulative appearances between the pair, Carrick Smith and Lennon have been great servants to Bedford Blues and we wish them all the very best with their future endeavours.

England sign Ed Robinson from Jersey and Alex Codling (formerly of Ealing) to coach in the summer internationals. Okay - this is stretching the topic a bit, but I didn't want to create a new one just for this. I honestly can't understand what has happened with Codling over the years, but he seems to have landed on his feet at least in the short term.

Ealing have signed Stephen Kerins from Connaght at scrum half. I'm a bit surprised by this, as he stated in an interview that he wants to come to Ealing to get more game time, as he has only had a couple of appearances this year. However, I know that we've re-signed Jordan Burns and I thought that Craig Hampson was due to be re-signed. Perhaps not, though that would be quite a loss.

One departure. Ben Nutley, of Coventry, has announced his retirement from playing rugby.
No injuries or medical reasons, and certainly on fine form, but fatherhood and post-rugby career aspirations seem to be the main drivers.
He'll continue coaching at Luton, and will be missed at Coventry.

I fully understand players quitting rugby and seeking full time employment . Most clubs pay a pittance in relation to the committment and dedication that it takes to play level two.

The risk / reward just does not add up. I am aware of so many players who have been unfortunate enough to get injuries that force them to stop playing. The playing window period is so short and at the end of that window there are so few sport related employment opportunities.

Coaching update ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Richmond Rugby has today confirmed it has made the decision to not renew the contract of Attack Coach Mark Matzopoulos ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Director of Rugby Steve Hill, said: “Matzy has been an integral part of Richmond’s success since I joined the club in 2010. His coaching enabled the Men’s First XV to move from the bottom of National 2 South to the giddy heights of finishing ninth in the Championship in 2017/18. Mark has contributed hugely to Richmond in his time with us and for that we are extremely grateful.

On behalf of everyone at the club we wish Mark and his family all the best for the future and thank him for 14 fantastic seasons at Richmond.”

Ealing sign centre James Little from Mitre 10 outfit North Harbour Rugby. An interesting signing in that he is 23, but already has 4 years of professional rugby under his belt in New Zealand. It will be interesting to see what he can bring to the club at a quite packed position.

With the trivial funding nowadays it really doesn’t matter? One of the “benefits” of reduced funding from the RFU there’s no incentive for playing English players.

That is not the point, new rules will apply, and we are waiting to see what is put in place of the Kolpak agreement which is no longer valid now we are outside the EU. If we replace it with a points based system, then all players without a UK ancestor will have to have a certain level of international experience or perhaps the club will have to justify why they need an overseas player , for example if there are no English players available to fill the role. I am sure that this will increase the numbers in the match day squad. In most leagues before Kolpak clubs were only allowed 2 overseas players in their match day squad.

As in ‘can’t beat three times European champions fielding 12 internationals (900ish caps between them) and 7 present or former Lions’? Maybe a bit harsh. I’m not sure any coaching set up could have substantially altered that equation.

Raft of re-signings today for Ealing while I've been stuck on the parking lot that disguises itself as the M25:

Adam Korczyk (back row) - was gutted with the awful injury he picked up early in the season, so glad to see him back in the fold, and also not just cast adrift.

Simon Uzokwe (backrow) - was very impressed with him early in the season, trailed off (no pun intended) in the last few games, but still a very handy player.

Shane Buckley (backrow) - He's fine, but I feel like he's also hit his ceiling as a very solid Championship squad player.

Ealing leavers list. I don't know where everyone is going, but I've tried to capture below. "Only" 14 people moving on is pretty good for Ealing.

Kieran Murphy - retiring. Has been a stalwart for the club  and a great physical presence in the back row. I will admit that he seemed to have lost a step this year, as I didn't see him crashing through the middle of the field to the extent that he had in previous years.

Elliot Millar Mills - Wasps A big loss. A forward with good hands, and a great scrummager. If you watched the 2nd playoff match, then you'll see how much better the scrum was until he was taken off at 50 minutes. After that, they were destroyed. A real concern, and needs to be replaced (though that will be difficult), as with Walker out, the Ealing scrum was very average.

Ben West - retiring

Guy Thompson - Jersey. Guy was a very rapid over the ball type 7, who brought incredible pace at his age. I am gutted that he is moving on, but he couldn't quite pip (very different play style) Simon Uzokwe. I personally would have started Guy, but I'm not DoR.

Bobby Beattie - Honestly can't remember this guy.

Johannes Jonker - Bath. Looked good when he was on the field, but didn't see much of him.

Dean Hammond - Terrible luck with injuries. Looked great in the Trailfinders cup, horror concussion against Jersey. Best wishes for the future.

Nathan Fowles - 3rd number 9. Didn't see the field this year. Looked fine when he was on last year.

Fraser Strachan - Never quite lived up to the potential that I think people saw. Hope things work out in the future.

Jack Tovey - Haven't seen a lot of Tuvs this year, but I've always liked what I've seen. Sad to see him go.

Michael Van Vuuren - Okay hooker, not accurate enough at the lineout. Clearly 3rd in pecking order.

Jack Rouse - Can't remember him.

Josh Pierterse - Spent most of his time on loan.

Oli Robinson - Spent most of his time on loan.

Blues retain wingers Tapley and Robson.

I think Robinson will be at Blues next season. He did play well but I can see why he was released by Ealing as he is a good Championship player at the moment rather than a lower end Premiership player.

Would prefer to be signing players on the way up career wise, not down . How much game time did Hooley get at Sarries. Also injury prone. Wonder if he'll make the Canada team again? Doubt it for the same reason.

Ealing will announce 4 signing today. So far two hookers, Tadgh McElroy who has spent some time with Bristol, Connaght, Saracens, and Bedford, and Jan-Henning Campher, a South African who joins from Lions. Of the two, Jan-Henning looks the more interesting to me as he is a 24 year old that has appeared for South AFrica at under 20s and has made 29 Super Rugby appearances already. That will make 4 Hookers on the Ealing squad, with Alun Walker due to be out with injury for some time.

Ealing also add a loosehead Dylan Smith. I'm a bit surprised by this as I thought we'd need a tighthead to replace Millar-Mills. Looks a very handy player as he has 2 Super Rugby appearances for Lions and spent the last season at Stade Francais.

Finally, Len Massyn, a huge back rower comes in, also from Lions (I'd love to know how we ended up with so many players from there). He can play 6 and 8, which still leaves me wondering if we have anyone lined up to replace Guy Thompson? Anyhow, has 16 Super Rugby appearances under his belt, and should be quite useful. I could easily see Ealing starting six or seven South Africans and three or four Irishmen in their 15 next year.

Being realistic, it's going to be Ealing. Nobody else has a war-chest like that available, even if they have better crowds.
Moving on to the next 'opening', I'm quite sure Donny, Cov, and CPs will be set up ready for the task on and off field (assuming Current planning comes to fruition).
I'm more interested to see a Championship expansion at the mo, TBH.

Looks like Ealing are following the Sale Sharks plan with loads of Saffers.

Next year has to be the best chance for anyone to get into the Premiership as there is no relegated Prem Side.

Following year - no promotion or relegation from Prem.

Year after play-off between bottom in Prem and top of Championship - so realistically Next year is the chance.

I think we need to be aware of the impact on Brexit on the availability of overseas players as the Kolpak agreement will not continue, unfortunately. I don't see that foreign players coming here or British players going abroad as a negative, young players can learn and the raising of standards of the sport in general is a positive. I agree that limits need to apply otherwise at the top level we can find we have no players in certain positions available for the National sides, so not a limit on how many per game, but maybe limit how many of certain positions in a league, if every side had two props from non EQ, for example, England would be in trouble. Then of course we need to define the word "foreign", is it just South Africans we have a problem with, seems some do.

When the foreign player is a seasoned international, I have no problem - it is when the myriad of average journeymen players are taking up places that should be taken by young English Qualified players that I have a problem.

The fact that most of them are South African is neither here nor their - Young players can only learn so much in training, they need consistent game time to develop (Marcus Smith being a prime example)

On this forum I read that four Ampthill players have now signed for other Championship teams. One has gone to Cornish Pirates and three have signed for Jersey. Yet when I go to the Ampthill RFC website there is nothing about this anywhere. I am therefore appealing to anyone in the know at Ampthill who reads this forum to post an update on next season’s recruitment and leavers.

Really? I can only assume Ampthill are reducing their outlay and looking to re-build the team next season without the threat of relegation. Even so, some communication from the club would be welcome.

How long have you been supporting Ampthill Cherub? As long as I have been aware of them - basically while they've been in tiers 2&3, they have never communicated.

I played for them from 1971 through to 1985 before moving away from the area. And I agree with you about the communication albeit their website is updated fairly regularly. So I am using this blog as a medium to see if their communication skills can improve. Let's see.

Not sure it's anything to do with communication skills tbf. It seems to be policy.

You might be right, Kimbo. Who knows. However, I do think the lack of communication can cause Chinese Whispers. As a club supporter, all I know is players are leaving. Some clarification on the matter from the club would be appropriate and welcome.

It happens at most clubs, at Donny, my club leaves it up to the new club to announce the move

At Roth we also announce players only when they have signed, and then send best wishes to ex players when they’ve been announced by their new club. At the start of the season, there does tend to be an announcement of who has moved on, just to clear up any who might have been missed, or have not yet been signed anywhere.

This might be different this season, due to The Season That Never Was (TSTNW). Do we go right back to the end of 19/20 and announce that? Seems a bit pointless but those guys didn’t really get a thank you, we didn’t have an awards night etc and it all seems a long time ago now.

Well, a batch of departures announced by Coventry this morning.
The two of significance from last season are scrum half Pete White who is moving to Hong Kong, and lock Alex Woolford.

Also sad to see Dan go. Somebody's going to get a very useful out-half/utility. I hope.

that's standard etiquette to permit the new employer to announce any moves (with a 'heads-up' to the former club so they can confirm the move & wish the person concerned all the best); this etiquette is very well-observed among clubs in English pyramid... deals involving clubs from other unions are sometimes a bit less collaborative

Yeah that's confirmed, was announced by Scottish earlier this week.

At nearly 43 Brighty’s best days are well past him sadly. Great servant of LS and good luck to him in picking up further pay as you play opportunities at the RAA.

If he's the same player, i remember watching Tom play for Scottish vs Ealing back in 2019, looked a solid player, great addition for cov.
