Some decent fixtures in this final round:

Ampthill 5 - 1 Bedford ... Cracking local derby to finish the group games. Ampthill have been playing some decent stuff and scoring points. Blues have been below par due to injuries, but are on the way back. Cracking game this one, but I think that the home side will prevail by the odd point out of 101.
YC 0 - 5 Nottingham ... Same old for the season so far.
ET 5 - 1 Coventry ... Another good match up, but I think that Ealing at home will just be too good for Cov. They won't worry about the surface though.
Newcastle 1 - 4 Jersey ... Just have a feeling about this one, but that probably means a huge home win. If Jersey click, then it could be really close. If Falcons are off form, then Jersey could nick it. If Jersey play like they did last week then it will be a cricket score....to Falcons that is
CP 5 - 0 LS ... LS seem to be alive in this competition this season, but I don't think that they will come away from the Mennaye with very much to show for their efforts.
Hartpury 4 - 1 Donny ... Th8is could be a really enthralling game. Both sides are showing some form and both look strong. I have gone for the home side as I think that they are better than their bottom of the group position suggests.

Ampthill 5 - 1 Bedford  3 in a row against Blues? Amps will score plenty -playing for a last 8 slot
Yorkshire 0 - 5 Nottingham No shock here, hard for Carnegie to get motivated for this one
Ealing 5 - 1 Coventry Ealing underperformed last week and will bite back
Pirates 1 - 5 LS  Scottish will fancy this against inconsistent Pirates
Falcons 5 - Jersey 0 Hard to envisage a Reds win. Prediction: 32 - 12
Hartpury 4 - 1 Donny Pury backs too strong and Donny's cup over

That'd be 5-2 then. (Unless Bedford are going to score an awful lot of penalties and/or field goals ).

Pool 1

Trailfinders 3-3 Cov Although 5-2 either way more likely Ealing to top the group as winners but Cov to secure a home Q/F draw with 23 points.

Ampthill 3-3 Blues Again 5-2 either way most likely but Amps to just miss out on a Q/F place.

Pool 2

Falcons 1-5 Jersey Jersey wingers to cut Falcons defence apart and win and score 6 tries although no doubt the behemoths will maul a few short range tries to secure a bonus point. Falcons to top the group as second seed and Jersey to play Cov away as 5th seed.

Hartpury 1-4 Donny Very close game but I fancy Donny's experience to secure 8th seed and an away Q/F at Trailfinders.

Pool 3

Is a great pool. I predict:

Yorkies 0-5 Notts

Pirates 5-2 Scottish

and three sides finishing on 21 points. Pirates to top the group and secure a home Q/F on points difference followed by Notts & finally Scottish who can visit Falcons.

Ampthill 5 - 2 Bedford - Having watched Ampthill and Bedford in back to back weeks, I have to say that Ampthill looks the much more professionally drilled side. Can't see the Blues getting much from this.
Leeds 0 - 5 Nottingham - men against boys, again
Ealing 5 - 1 Coventry - I'm very curious about what team Ealing will put out for this. They have a season defining tilt with Newcastle the following week, but this decides the pool.
Pirates 3 - 3 LS - No clue. Both teams wildly inconsistent this year.
Falcons 1 - 5 Jersey - Jersey are due for their annual upset against the relegated club.
Hartpury 4 - 1 Donny - Hartpury to pip this at home.

Ampthill 5 - 2 Bedford  - Battle of Bedford . . . Bedford awful this year, why invest when you know there is no threat of relegation.
Yorkshire 10 - 5 Nottingham - One way traffic
Ealing 5 - 1 Coventry  - Probably but Cov up for this
Pirates 5 - 1 LS   - CP seek revenge for reversal at RAG
Falcons 5 - 0 Jersey - One way traffic
Hartpury 5 - 1 Donny  - Donny really poor this season, see Bedford comments, the same applies.

Get what you say Runitback, but it would keep 2500 LOYAL supporters happy, after all that is where most of the money comes from.  If we haven't spent it, the next balance sheet should make interesting reading.

Slightly stronger Cov side than I anticipated. I assumed a couple more of the youngsters were being brought in (after Wednesday's local radio programme), but good to see another Cov Kid Academy product on the bench (McNulty).

Yes, I agree with Kimbo this is a more ‘core’ squad than Rowland Winters was hinting at on Wednesday. Two young front rows on the bench, and a small surprise at 4, but overall a pretty good 23. Surprised not to see Flinn at 9/21, but both the other two are fit and on form.

Ealing Trailfinders team to play Coventry in Round Six of the Championship Cup at Trailfinders Sports Club on Saturday 14th December: This selection is absolutely barmy. First off, we've swapped out the whole squad again. Secondly, there is no cover for any centres or wingers on the bench - we've got 6 forwards, a scrum half (who should be starting) and a fly half on the bench. Hope no one gets injured. FFS. Otherwise, the starting line up is okay, although Shingler and Hampson haven't had a run out together in ages. I guess our plan is to outmuscle Coventry.

15 Tommy Bell 14 James Cordy Redden 13 Lewis Jones 12 Pat Howard 11 Reon Joseph 10 Steven Shingler 9 Craig Hampson 1 Jordan Els 2 Alun Walker 3 Craig Trenier 4 Dave McKern 5 Harry Casson 6 Andrew Durutalo 7 Jordy Reid 8 Rayn Smid ©

Replacements:

Gerg. Ealing play Falcons next weekend and if you want to beat them then you need to win the battle up front first. Perhaps there is method in their madness to try to get a huge, powerful front 8 working together to give them the best chance in the league.

I can understand the logic of what you're saying, but given the number of injuries this year I wouldn't be confident enough to go into a game with no replacements on for 11-15.

Not 100% sure but I think that makes the 4 top seeds (home QFs) to be Falcons, Ealing, Nottingham and Pirates, with the other qualifiers as Cov, Scottish, Reds and Donny. Pairings to be confirmed - reminder that it's not guaranteed to be 1v8, 2v7 etc as draw may be adjusted to pool opponents don't play each other again. We'll find out next week...

Fairly sure Donny qualified on PT's difference (which is the tie-breaker used before tries scored). Before today Ampthill were -95 & Knights -68. The match report says that now - it may have been edited (like this post Big smile )

I wouldn't be sure about that JD - I think the draw might be adjusted & wouldn't bet on where the Reds will end up. Unlikely to be Falcons (pool oppo) but could be Nottingham, Pirates or Ealing

Back from my coldest ever trip to KP and finally starting to thaw out and determined to look for the positives. For Jersey thankfully no inside Centre called Mark ended up with a broken arm or leg and although the game was a total mismatch the lads selected tried their hearts out and their heads never dropped. Although it seems likely that there will be lots of changes for the match against Scottish next week those lads in the starting 15 stood up to the big lads on Saturday and didn't buckle. Great to see Kuki make the trip and be involved with the team even if only in a support capacity - his absence has been a huge loss this year. Well done to Flybe for two exhilarating flights which got me  to Newcastle Airport by 10.15am having left home in St Ouens at 6am and Jersey airport at 7.10am - who needs Alton Towers when you can bounce around in a small plane? I'm ever hopeful that Jersey will meet Falcons in the final at KP later this season and perhaps both clubs will select their strongest team if it happens. Falcons are a proper premiership club with great support and if there is a better place to watch club rugby than the South Stand at KP I've not found it yet. Great to meet Sam, Gary & Mark again and see them play a full part in Falcon's march back to the premiership - you are always welcome back in St Ouen's lads as is Charlie Maddison who hopefully will be involved in the match down here in the spring.

Brilliant draw Jersey couldn't get Falcons until the final so Ealing were ideal next best. Will Jersey get a home semi final if we beat them?

Brilliant draw Jersey couldn't get Falcons until the final so Ealing were ideal next best. Will Jersey get a home semi final if we beat them?

Not sure CC, but imagine clarification will follow at some stage. It would be a nice (ahem) 'carrot' for the winners, although you'd think that beating our old rivals and twice holders on their own patch would be incentive enough regardless of where one ended up for the next round.

QUOTE.
speaking to the Reds players following a first half mauling at Ealing, they said that ET really ran out of puff and another 10 minutes and they really thought that they would have had them.

"ran out of puff ".......not the first person to mention lack of  fitness at the end of the match. Maybe the Jersey reds will exploit this lack of fitness this time round. Ealing have shipped a few points at the end of games but often match the end of the game points scored tally.

Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

I wonder if this was the logic behind 6 forwards on the bench last weekend. Led to Craig Willis coming in to play 12. Maybe a trick from Eddie Jones' playbook. Wink

Does anyone have any inside knowledge on the potential merging of the Prem and Champ Cups? I seem to remember it was a two season deal and after that they were going to consider a combined cup competition...
