Predictions: Hartpury 1 - 5 Jersey - Jersey should be able to bounce back from their horror show against Cov. Ealing 0 - 4 Doncaster - I realise there’s probably a hint of bias in this but Ealing didn’t look unbeatable against Bedford and Donny have had 3 weeks to prepare for this, with two free weekends in a row. If Donny can compete upfront then I think we have every chance of doing this. We need to make it a grind. Coventry 1 - 5 Saracens - is this a potentially awkward game for Sarries given the 5 day turnaround and possible resting of some big names?. Coventry are no mugs at home, especially with a noisy crowd behind them. Sarries to win but get a scare. Ampthill 4 - 1 Richmond - Amps will be tired after their exerts against Saracens but at home I think they’ll have just enough to overcome a short turnaround. Nottingham 1 - 5 Bedford - Nottingham are improving but I’ve seen Bedford in their last two games and they’ve played well without getting the rewards that they’ve deserved. Blues should take this but expect tries.

A far more difficult set of fixtures to predict than last week when only Coventry surprised everyone, but here goes.
Hartpury 1-5 Jersey. Jersey will be on a mission following last week's reversal, but Hartpury can also score tries. I expect Jersey to win, but I can see the home side scoring 4 tries. Ealing 5-0 Doncaster. I cannot share Donnyknightfan's optimism here and I expect Ealing to romp this one, but like last week, not by 50 points. Coventry 0-5 Saracens. Saracens have one goal in mind, and that is to win every single remaining game by as many points as they can. They are ruthless. I cannot see Coventry stopping them, even if they themselves are on a role. Ampthill 5-0 Richmond. Despite last Monday's heavy defeat, Ampthill played far better than the scoreline suggested. They will be playing with confidence, hopefully in front of a crowd, and will want to be winning the last two games of the season so they can cement a 6th spot. Nottingham 5-2 Bedford. This one is hard to call. Nottingham are improving with every game, but Bedford play fast attractive rugby but keep slipping up. Could go either way.

Very few low scoring games in the last few weeks, lot of 5 pointers and expect it to continue:
Hartpury 5 - 2 Jersey - Not a lot in this, plenty of tries. Reds to slip up at the death. Ealing 5 - 1 Doncaster - A tight first half but Trailfinders to nick it. Lets say 24-17. Coventry 0 - 5 Saracens - talk of a Cov scare is surely deluded. Sarries to kick on in inevitable fashion Ampthill 5- 0 Richmond - Richmond done for the season I feel. Amps to bounce back at home. Nottingham 2 - 5 Bedford - Notts have a little spring in their step but Blues too strong and will have their sights on the battle of Bedfordshire

Hartpury 1-5 Jersey - Jersey will avenge last week's loss. Ealing 5-0 Doncaster - Last week Ealing rotated quite a number of players, but they know that this match is almost a must win for the playoffs, so I think that they come out full strength. Donny also know that they need to win this one and blank Ealing, but I think Ealing will pull this one off, and go over 50 on the fast track at home. AND I'LL BE THERE TO WATCH!!!! Coventry 2-5 Saracens - Saracens to be a bit beaten up, and Cov to come out flying with supporters, but fall just short. Ampthill 5-0 Richmond - A's much better than the score against Sarries suggest. Nottingham 0-5 Bedford - Nottingham may have beat Richmond, but they are really not good. Bedford is better than their record, and can always be counted on for the try of the week.
Of course, I only got one prediction right on the number, and only guessed even the OUTCOME correct on 2 games. So ignore me...

Turns out Ampthill won a pre-battle of Bedfordshire with try of the week! I thought it was probably 4th best.

Hartpury v Jersey -1-5 Hartpury flattered to deceive, after a great first game never hit the mark since, Jersey smarting from last week
Ealing v Doncaster - 5-2 A lot closer than some think but money talks
Coventry v Saracens - 0-5 One way traffic 5 day turn around or not!
Ampthill v Richmond -5-0 Ampthill by far the better of the last two promoted sides. Richmond look a band of journeyman from National 1 clubs thrown together with no quality in the side, they have been very disappointing and very poor in the last two games v Bedford and Nottingham
Nottingham v Bedford 2-5 Saints 2s to pull through, but Nottingham have made a decent fist of it as last week showed, well done them!

A bit harsh on Richmond - it was a great effort to get a squad together and take part in the competition IMO.

It was a view that Richmond in my eyes, have been poor in the playing department. Agree outstanding they are playing! Agree great effort to get off the ground unlike London Scottish. But my view is they have been poor and lack Championship quality!

Richmond looked like they have struggled last couple of matches but did well earlier v Saracens and also beating full time Jersey. I understand there have been some key players missing and instead of raiding Prem academies have given their other squad members the opportunity to play Championship rugby. Ampthill very good in matches when they have their full list of dual reg players available from Saracens and Wasps. I understand the regulations are there to be used but something sad really when historic clubs like Bedford and Coventry plus the likes of Hartpury and Ampthill have at times more than half of their teams coming from clubs other than themselves.

Somewhat of an exaggeration there. While I absolutely agree that clubs should use their own assets where possible, when you lose more than half your squad during the lockdown, plus a couple of million quid minimum in income, you do what you can when the devil pishes on your cornflakes. Just checking the last three games (and I can't see any of the earlier ones being any different given how many are actually registered), Cov have started five loaners each time, with one on the bench (while also making space for young Academy players. More than half?

More than half? | Excellent summary of both sides of the argument in these posts. Given the nature of this truncated season I'm happy with whatever clubs are doing to beg, borrow or scrape together the best playing resource they can to field a team each week. The performances of many clubs are bound to be inconsistent given the difficulties clubs have faced but its surely a great effort to come through all this and be playing in front of supporters again.

In my dreams the Ealing vs Donny game is very tight coming into the 80th minute Donny lead 21 to 20 (three tries a piece) Ealing are attacking our line when Kyle Evans intercepts a pass out wide, which if made would have sealed the win for Ealing, but Kyle sprints the length of the pitch touches down under the posts for an emphatic win, Olver converts, Ealing 20 - Donny 28 (0 - 5) and Ealing are now dependent on Donny to lose against Nottingham the following week. To make the play offs
Now in reality - the above is a possibility but I know there is another possibility and I am not going to dwell on that.

Ealing Trailfinders team to play Doncaster - Interesting selections for this week, a little bit concerned about lack of continuity with 5 changes, however the changes mostly come from folks who didn't have their best game last week (with the exception of Rayn). Excited to see Burns get a start, great to see Dean Hammond recovered from that horror concussion against Jersey. Slightly surprised to see Uzokwe not on the bench at all. This seems like a slightly speedier side than the one that has ran out lately. Yeeealing!

And the simple fact is without the time limited link with the Saints, there would be no Bedford this or next season. It is surely a sadder prospect to lose an historic club like that altogether than them playing a couple of seasons with borrowed players. Now if that link extends longer than a couple of seasons then there is a debate to be had.

It will be interesting to see Burns from the off - I think it's fair to say on his time at Bedford he was always more effective coming off the bench than in the games he started, but how we'd love that gas back at GR!!!

So when is the time for the debate?
Those with longer memories will recall Squadron Leader being pilloried on this forum for his remarks on 'dual reggars' as he called them. Much of what he forecast seems to be happening. We have had teams fetching players in to save their place in this league at the expense of others, none of whom broke the regulations at the time (although some were changed later). Are we so desperate to keep our Historic clubs at this level that we are happy for them to become 'A' teams? If that is the case then we may as well go back to the 70's and send all the teams who have fought their way up the ladder back down, so the cosy clique can continue.

How have the ET DRs looked so far this season? |
Robinson has played well and looked good with ball in hand and winning turnovers. He was probably meant to be back up No 8 but has impressed to become 1st choice. However, I think he is a good Championship player rather than a bottom end Premiership one, so I think he would be released and maybe join us.
Fenley has been 3rd choice so his game time has been limited, so hard to say anything about him, as he has played so few minutes.

Let’s not forget the league could have been a division of 4, so I think fans from all clubs should just appreciate that 7 other clubs have got together a squad to play and give more variety for ultimately nothing but some debt!

Going forward when this horrible COVID mess is behind us I hope we can have the debate on the future but for now lets get back to playing quality Championship rugby in front of supporters and if that needs DRs or loan players that's fine by me.

I’ve been really impressed with Oli Robinson and agree he is probably our best 8. He’s a Bedford lad so wouldn’t be at all surprised if we actually sign him permanently from you. Apparently we tried to sign him when he first went ET. Whilst not a prem player, he’s too good to be 5th choice of whatever he must be at Ealing.
Haven’t seen a great deal of Fenley, but has looked comfortable at this level in the game time he has got.

Ampthill 4-1 Richmond Could go either
way but I just favour a home win
Coventry 1-4 Saracens This should be a
great evenly contested game but Sarries usually win games like that.
Ealing 1-4 Doncaster If Donny keep their
discipline & 15 on the pitch they could win a close match if not carnage.
Hartpury 0-4 Jersey A St Ouens lad to
score the winning try from a 5 metre scrum
Nottingham2-5 Bedford Should be
entertaining

I think the ref has probably been too quick with the whistle but I think he’s been the same for both sides. The Ealing number 4’s antics have been irritating at times but to be fair I’d love it if he played for Donny so you can’t have it both ways. Very good game so far.

I think we’re going to need it!
Much better from us in the second half but Donny were possibly edging it until 50 mins. Olver guilty of over playing it when still only 2 scores down, unfortunately killed the contest in the end. A couple of great tries from Thomson, Johnson and Daniels proving we do have a good attacking game.
De Wee is definitely a marmite player, the sort you hate when in opposition but love when on your side. Didn’t have the benefit of the camera or replays so can’t comment on the incidents. The whooping is unnecessary though.
Itoje vs De Wee will be a mouthwatering contest.

While admitting that Hartpury aren’t in the same calibre as Coventry, who spanked the Reds last weekend (& beat Hartpury by a similar margin) the Jersey display was unrecognisable from 7 days previously. Winners up front to secure the possession that enabled them to play with pace that ultimately Hartpury couldn’t cope with - they kept trying to play, but 3 tries in 6 mins late in 1st half took the stuffing out of them. Shame for home supporters at their first/only game - a BP would have been nice for them. But pleased for Max Argyle in his 100th game with mum & dad there to watch. Let’s hope the Reds perform in the same vein next w/e v Pirates so that it’s an end-of-season cracker...

Donny played with huge ambition and attacked from all over the pitch. The ill-judged cross field kick late on really put the nail the coffin though. Ealing in the first half left a lot of points on the field, not converting several rolling mauls, and utterly failing to take a number of restarts. The restarts were a point of emphasis for them also, so disappointing. The second half as the subs, especially the front row subs, came on was a different story. I agree with other folks who said that De Wee vs. Itoje will be a very interesting match up - that combative edge was missing from Ealing in the first tilt. Biggest concern coming out of this for me was that Malton went off with a hamstring issue - we're down to just one hooker if he can't go, but 3 weeks to recover at least.
In terms of the refereeing, I disagreed with a huge number of calls. I'll wait to see the penalty count in TRP, but seemed unbalanced to me. I hope that top quality officiating is lined up for the playoffs.

Right. It's a bright grey day at Dillingham Park with a naughty cross wind across the pitch. It is Ampthill's last home game of this shortened season and although there are numerous team changes, they will not be under-estimating Richmond. Let's see what happens.

And although the wind did play its part, that was without any doubt the worst 40 minutes I have watched this season. It was like watching two average Division 1 sides making mistake after mistake. It was not Championship standard.
This is the first glimpse I have had of Richmond so I cannot really comment, except to say they look very ordinary.
Ampthill on the other hand I have seen all but one of their games. They continue to give away far too many penalties and even their handling, which is normally excellent, is letting them down. I am hoping Mr Turner will give them a good rollicking and I can look forward to a much better second half. At least Ampthill will have the slight wind advantage.

Not the best ever game but it did improve in the 2nd half.
Ampthill score 5 tries to one and yet could have lost because of the penalty count. Something to work on before next season.
Time now to concentrate on Bedford away next week.

Well, with Nottingham v Bedford it’s 7-0 to Nottingham, not a classic, the two best features have been Bedford’s defence and Nottingham’s scrum. Bedford had a YC, didn’t concede any points, Nottingham start the 2nd half with a YC.

Nottingham win with the final kick after Bedford took the lead with what we thought was the last kick of the game. Some poor decisions from Bedford to give Nottingham 3 penalties from their 22 after the restart, let them work down the pitch, and, fair play, they took them to score with the last. Final score was 22-20, 3 tries a piece.Pretty much sums up our season, inexperience of the youngsters showing a bit possibly, but Onajefe had the ball knocked out of his hand while over the whitewash, a real d’oh moment, which should have put us in the ascendancy. Hey ho, roll on next season 🤪

So the P-O match-up is known, although order of top 2 still TBC.
Still a few minor battles for next weekend to hopefully provide a bit of interest/edge to last round: - Donny (31) & Pirates (30) for 3rd/4th
- Cov (25) unlikely to move up or down from 5th
- Amp (20) & Jersey (19) for 6th/7th
- Bed (12), Hart (12) & Nott'm (11) for 8th/9th/10th
- 'Mond (4) certain to finish 11th
