Due to a couple of cancellations Blackheath are looking for a preseason friendly on weekend of 27th August, as it’s bank holiday weekend Friday night under lights at Well Hall would be a decent option still allowing for the 3 days holiday. Please reply on here or PM me and we will get back to you ------------- So many Christians not enough Lions |

| Esher have scheduled pre=season matches against Sutton & Epsom, Newport (Wales) and Rosslyn Park during August. Can't help Blackheath, I'm afraid. |

Forget that post! Esher have confirmed Blackheath (H) on 20th August and Rosslyn Park (H) on Friday 27th August.

Bit more to it than that - however I am very annoyed with this ruling. It would have been great to see Roth at Castle Park. And we wanted to give Challinor and Flockhart a nice send off after such great careers with our club. I think the lower league clubs could have had rolling subs etc. To reduce the perceived ‘danger’ but the covid thing…anyone got any ideas? Hope we get to play them later in the year ------------- Onward and Upwards C'mon Donny! |

| We (Roth) are away at Sale tomorrow but according to the local paper the game is being played with uncontested scrums as Sale have unavailability. As we have lost the Donny game, I'm hoping that Leeds do have a squad for the week after. |

I don’t think they would want to face our front row. Seeing as most of them are from Doncaster I wouldn’t blame them. Can’t understand why the Donny game was called off….for our safety??? It’s Roth we’re talking about, not the Bolshoi ballet. I also hear Old Elthamians have withdrawn from Nat 1 in which case we should take their place, given we shouldn’t have been relegated in the first place.

I remember when Hayward's Heath did that the Thursday before the league started once, it annoyed all the other clubs in the league. If they knew they had no money to fund travel, the honourable thing would have been to say so at the first opportunity. Rotherham are probably absolutely fuming because that could have reprieved them.

I wonder sometimes about us armchair warriors comments! From the point of view of one who did see the 'hammering' it has to be seen in the context of a first run out in some 518 days I think. Big scrummaging pack was restricted to uncontested scrums at the request of Sale and the nimble Sale backs given plenty of early fast clean ball as a result. Like most things these days not just black and white. Disappointing yes but glad to see the lads be able to get a pre-season run out. Something to work on but still high hopes for the coming season. Bring on Leeds (hopefully) is what I say! |

Just for clarity, I was at the game  I'm not sure how much of a difference it would have made if the scrums were contested, yes we have a strong pack but Sale were no mugs. It's also a stretch to suggest that the score-line may have been impacted by the lack of game time, given that Sale were in the same boat and TBH we do have some players who gained game time at Donny. I don't know whether the Sale squad is quite established, I know we have a lot of new players so time is needed for them to gel. I have since found out that there were lots of mitigating circumstances relating to the game, so I can now understand why perhaps the team were not as effective as I hoped. Having said all of the above, I believe we have recruited very well and expect good things from us this coming season.

I too was at the game. Scoreline was probably not reflective of the game itself with Rotherham having a lot of possession. The Sale backs definitely made a massive difference and any mistakes were capitalised on with points. However, that's sort of the point of these games. To find out where you're likely to make mistakes etc. Rotherham were no push overs and I suspect that given a few players back in the squad and ironing out the kinks, they'll be formidable opponents. During the game we had uncontested scrums, but for 20 minutes post game, Neil Briggs did a coaching session with both sets of forwards with live scrums. That for me is the spirit of the sport we all love. Both teams having serious fun and learning.
Putting all that aside The "shed on tour" are amazing travelling supporters and having them down at Heywood Road is something we will miss this season. The play hard, drink hard and don't make a mess :-) Perfect house guests. |

Friendly Hull RUFC v Leeds due to be played tomorrow cancelled by Leeds who are unable to field a team. There seems to be big problems at Leeds this season. ------------- If Rugby is the game they play in Heaven ..... Why does it hurt like Hell when you retire? |

Rochford 100 12 - 52 Cambridge Rochford looked pretty decent - and a nice little club. I am sure will do well in Nat 2. Cambridge had quite a strong side out. If you are visiting, leave yourself extra time to get there, traffic was terrible once you are off the main road. Not that they can do anything about that. ------------- Sweeney Delenda Est |

Sedge 14 Sale 31. A very competent performance by Sale FC today. Their forward play was excellent and to be honest we struggled to cope with it for large periods, unlike last week. If I'm being honest, I think we'll be heading into the 22/23 season at level 4. Unless the stars align and all the other teams in N2N this season have a severe drop in form then I don't think we'll be close to finishing 1st or 2nd. I think we'll have enough to finish somewhere in the top eight. We've lost some very good players - notably Shay Owen and Mark Dixon, the former heading back to Wales and the latter joining Sale FC. Two very good players that will definitely be missed. I hear we're meant to be getting a new, experienced, No. 10, but he wasn't part of either of our warm-up games so it could just be a rumour. I think the changes are ridiculous, but there's not much we can do about it.

Went to see my mates son play for Richmond 3s against Tunbridge Wells 1s- really good game TW won 34-12 (I think) TW scrum strong, Richmond defence very aggressive. Both teams made a no of changes at half time which seemed to weaken Richmond more than TW. Stayed and watched Richmond v Ampthill (26-7). Both teams used a lot of players. Ampthill stronger in scrum but their lineout was poor-looked like a lot of new players not yet on the same page. Richmond scored a couple of cracking tries and looked more together. Over 500 in the crowd. Thankfully not too many injuries. Great to attend a proper rugby day (including significant amount of rain!)

Leeds Tykes 26 Rotherham Titans 13 We (Titans) in my opinion were unlucky to come away with a defeat, we were a completely different team (not literally) to that who turned up at Sale a couple of weeks ago. Leeds scored some great breakaway tries to come back from 13-0 down, no argument there, but we shouldn't have given them the chances. Our forwards were very strong all game. Looking forward to the first game of the season with confidence.

Sheffield Tigers 12 Leicester Lions 15Following the trial match involving both 1st team and development team players last week against Bourneville, the Lions took a trimmed down squad to National 2 North side Sheffield Tigers. However with a number of 1st team regulars from the 19/20 season still missing the squad again involved a number of the development squad. In the absence of captain Ollie Tapscott and vice-captain Ollie Taylor, Devon Constant led the Lions for the first time. The early exchanges saw the Tigers dominate possession although resolute defence kept them pinned in their own half. Two penalties led to a 5m lineout though and the Sheffield outfit drove over from a rolling maul for the first score of the day. 5-0. The Lions responded positively though and looked threatening as they attacked wide. Following a series of attacks that got the Lions in to the Tigers' 22, it was the captain Constant who got the Lions on the scoreboard with a powerful pick and go from the back of a ruck in the corner. 5-5. Both sides struggled to win clean lineout ball in the first half but it was from a rare clean take that the Lions launched an attack. Ethan Godefroy provided the ball from the lineout, Luke Veebel hit up in midfield and following an uncharacteristic Johnny Murdoch carry, fly-half Cameron Coates found blind-side Constant who drew the defence and fed Alex WilHuckleberryson. The full-back showed great footwork to turn the covering defence inside out and create space for new signing Jake Sterland to hand-off his opposite number and run in at the corner. 5-10. The Lions attack was now firing and it was second row Ed Sumpter who broke the Sheffield line following an offload from Coates who was starting to control the game. Sumpter drew the fullback and found scrum half James Stubbs on a good supporting line who had the pace to finish off another slick move. 5-15. Head Coach Gareth Collins made a number of changes for the second half, giving opportunity to a number of development players. Sheffield dominated possession and territory but the Lions defended stoutly, conceding only one converted try following sustained pressure on The Lions' line. Final score 12-15. There were a lot of positive signs for this young Lions side. New signings Isaac Thompson, Zach Bean and Jake Sterland all made positive contributions and development player, Cameron Boyd, had a fine game on the back row. Two further development players, Augy Clark and Ben Duke, and two former development players who have progressed to the first team squad, Henry Martin and Will Helliwell, all came off the bench to claim valuable experience. The Lions' next game, the season opener away at Redruth, on 4th September will be a very difficult challenge but with some senior players still to return things are looking good. Team: 1. If that was RP's first choice side, it is a stunning result. I assumed RP still had their income from the big billboards, so would have kept a strong squad and would be there or thereabouts for promotion. Having looked on RP site, it was officially a Park Rangers (2nd XV) side. Still a good result.

Not even close. Bench was stacked but apart from that at Dave Lewis at 9 not a lot of these guys will be seeing game time in National 1 unless there are mass injuries

Redurth ( if they travel) now Fuca is coaching them. They should have gone up last time before season ended IMO and would have done instead of Ton Judds had it been played out. Bury have put together a tidy side and Clifton have as well now they have the Bristol link working again. Id say Esher 3rd behind Redruth and Clifton.

Im sure a number will go up (with the re-org more places potentially up for grabs) Redruth i agree are another contendor, Bury not so much DoR & Head Coach leaving so close to the season a big issue for them. How many Bristol players will Clifton get with the current regulations? |

Bury have Ford as head coach, possible the best coach in some peoples eyes in the league. I am not sure, I would not bank on more than 1 to go up, unless Esher finish 3rd, the the rules may be bent! As we know the leagues are going to 14, they will reduce the numbers coming down, instead of those going up, to keep the strength in the leagues. Clifton can field up to 7 in a league game, be it a mixture of qualifications and routes to get to that number. They have already beaten a full stength Taunton side on the road and Cardiff Met.

I seem to recall the last time (ok one of the last times) the RFU bent the rules it ended in Esher being relegated!
