Coleman gets 4 week's for his 3rd red card in 3 consecutive matches against Sarries, all for high shots, and Marler get 6 for sledging. The game has lost sight of what is important

Four weeks of Marler’s six are suspended and , if the stories are right, it went well beyond “sledging”.

Marler has form for this kind of thing.  Perhaps he was lucky to be treated this leniently.

Agreed brb,
Physical abuse must be treated more seriously than some verbals.

Surely if it was a homaphobic comment it can't be swept under the carpet, otherwise where will lead it to imo.

How does the old proverb go? “Sticks and stones May break my bones but words will never hurt me.” Sadly less true these days.

Exactly my point.
If Hennan had had the self discipline to front up to Marler rather than attack him, he would have made Marler look like the embarrassing idiot he is.
I note Marler was wearing 'tights' during the match. Was this in preparation for a future career with other 'C' list nobodies in pantomime as the villain?

As far as I can see absolutely no one anywhere has suggested it was a homophobic comment.

The 'what was said?' uncertainty cleared up by Telegraph today...

Audio from the incident in Tuesday's match between Harlequins and Bristol has been released on social media following Marler's ban by the Rugby Football Union.

In the exchange prior to a scrum before the end of the first half, Marler can be heard saying to Heenan: "I'm clearly not your brother, am I? There's no way I'm from the same mother as you. Your mum's a f***** wh***."

Marler's initial comment is met with no reaction from Heenan, before the prop repeats: "Your mum's a wh***".

Following the second remark a scrap broke out between the two packs of forwards. Heenan was penalised as a result of the fight by referee Karl Dickson, who did not hear Marler's comments but insisted to Heenan and the Bristol captain, Steven Luatua, that Marler would be punished retrospectively if the comment was picked up over the various broadcast microphones.

Heenan could then be heard over Dickson's microphone saying: "Karl, my mum's in hospital with cancer".

Apologies for my inference above.
Now that what he said is out in the public domain, a shocking thing to have said.

It is indeed shocking but I would suspect not uncommon. It is reported that prior to this Heenan referred to Marler as being mad which some might think equally shocking given Marler's publicly admitted mental health issues.

What will be interesting is whether we see a raft of suspensions for similar incidents as I suspect it will be far to much to hope that those behaving like children actually grow up.

It is sad when things like this are said in any sport, as banter or to wind up opponents.

I cannot believe Marler got away with just 2 weeks ban.

Must be down to his past squeaky clean character

Marler needs professional help.

Marler has gone public with his mental health issues and has received help. Possibly time to cut him a little slack. He did something stupid and has been punished but he is far from the only one in the game (or more noticeably amongst those commenting on his recent behaviour) who it could be argued would also benefit from professional help.

Is there any report/evidence about Heenan making this comment?  http://www.englandrugby.com/dxdam/e1/e1377b78-d60a-4d2c-b839-bb4c3ffc8132/MarlerHarlequinsJudgmentDec22.pdf" rel="nofollow - Marler made no reference to any such comments in his submission to the RFU.

Heenan said "you're better than that brother", in reference to Marler kicking him in the previous ruck.

RE:Coleman earlier in the thread one of those red cards was rescinded on appeal, so it is actually 2 red cards in 2 seasons.   Not a great record by any stretch but not as bad as portrayed.

The transcript I read (and I couldn't find it when I originally posted) referred to Heenan saying you must be mad to Marler. Of course this is commonly said when someone does something daft and usually said without much thought and not because it is thought the person is genuinely mad.

My point was that with Marler's well publicised mental health issues Heenan's comment could well have been misinterpreted. The fact Marler apologised after the game and then admitted his guilt at the hearing and didn't seek to use Heenan's comment as mitigation is at least to his credit even if he was a pi11ock for saying what he did in the first place.

Read an article earlier which stated even Marler's wife won't defend him.

Just think his ban would be acceptable for a first offence - but it is far from that.

Listening to the Jim Hamilton podcast this week, Andy Goode was saying that the RFU charged Marler under their own laws rather than under the World Rugby regs which have much stricter bans for low/ medium/ high-end severity.  This is why they were able to suspend four of the six weeks (due to his clean record and good behaviour...?)

Marler deserves a much longer ban . . . that was not sledging or banter it was totally offensive and contrary to every value rugby espouses. Karl Dixon could obviously hear it and should have taken action before the flare up!!

A lot of analysis on this going on - can anyone say that Marler knew that his mum had cancer and was in hospital? We know sledging exists and no doubt probably experienced it at some point in time.

Yes, it wasn’t a nice thing to say especially once we are aware of the mother in question and her sad situation. He has been punished, he shouldn’t have said it, and is likely wishing he hadn’t. Perhaps instead let the powers that be use this situation to educate and promote better standards and set higher values for our international ’ England’ squad players to portray at all times.

In my day if you swore at an opponent in any way it was a penalty . . Dixon obviously heard him say his mother was a f@cking betel nut and should have intervened then!!!

Pat Lam’s view which of course won’t satisfy the “hang him high” brigade:

Lam is happy the matter has been dealt with and still holds a lot of affection for Marler who has apologised several times to Heenan, privately and in public.

“It’s been handled,” Lam said. “As I said at the time, we love Joe. It was handled very well in the sense that he apologised to Jake straight away, that evening, and Jake accepted it.

“The formal process went through and he apologised again. As far as we’re concerned it’s closed and we all move forward.

“There’s still a lot of love for Joe and I think he’s shown a lot of remorse. Apologies are good but I think forgiveness is the best thing, so let’s all move on.”

It is nuts you can get punished more for saying a naughty word than for taking someone out late, injuring them and ending their career.
