The Red Reds
Great feather in the cap and a real honour .... I know that Russia are not a major force in world rugby, but still, what a great pre-season game that will be.

You should be ok - they have been opposition for Oxford University RFC in the last few years so Jersey ought to be able to cope with them!

Ealing Trailfinders team to play Bishop’s Stortford in a pre-season friendly on Saturday 24th August at Trailfinders Sports Club: Really happy with this side, especially to see Craig Willis fit enough to be on the bench after apparently being injured earlier in the offseason. The only ommissions that surprise me are Alex Lundberg and Jordan Els upfront. I thought that tandem (with Walker) were far superior to Elwood and Davis last year - but it is the preseason in any event. Also - hope Jordy Reid is fit, otherwise can't see why they'd leave him out. Thank goodness rugby is back!

15 Peter Lydon 14 Seb Stegmann 13 David Johnston © 12 Harry Sloan 11 Reon Joseph 10 Steven Shingler 9 Craig Hampson 1 Jake Ellwood 2 Alun Walker 3 George Davis 4 Dave McKern 5 Harry Casson 6 Shane Buckley 7 Andrew Durutalo 8 Oli Robinson

Replacements:

Matt Cornish, Harry Seward, Josh Pieterse, Ben West, James Cannon, Rayn Smid, Harry Dugmore, Jordan Burns, Nathan Fowles, Craig Willis, Pat Howard, Charlie Dearman

A good runout for both sides I thought Kimbo and a good game to watch.  Cov deserved the win.  Here's to being in the same league (level2) in the not too distant future.  we need this fixture!

On 60 minutes we had a kick to put us in front against a full time pro side. Shortly after that we put on 2 young props, having lost both second rows one in the build up and one after 15 minutes. The back rower that moved to lock was then taken off injured so we had a hooker at 8 for the last 15 minutes with 2 flankers in the row so taken into context was a decent performance. We scored 4 really good tries and if we had converted those it would have been closer (kickers 1 from 5). So while no one likes to lose its pre season and about the systems and processes which for 75% of the game were very good against a good opposition.

I would imagine that it was pre agreed that Ealing would not put out their first or second pick props. Bishop's Stortfords coach,Andy Long,ex England hooker would understand the potential danger in a mis match of props.

Ealing started with ex Loughborough prop George Davis and Jake Ellwood who was loaned to Chinnor last season.

A decent Championship team should always look to put 50 points on a ND1 team.  With the Premiership not providing pre-season games it has been tough for clubs.  Normally one against ND1 for attack and one against a Premiership team for defence is how most clubs will do it.

With the cup games first that is going to be effectively the pre-season games.

Blues played last Friday night and then their next game is 3 weeks later against Cardiff Blues the Saturday before it starts at home to Ealing.

agree Brizzer. Reds need to back up the performance in Moscow - interesting to see how close we can get to a PRO14 side, albeit with plenty of players missing on RWC duty (Reds also have 2 absentees who'll be en route to Japan). Also interesting to see how Russia get on when they host Connacht on the same day...

Good pre-season match for Coventry albeit only winning 35-0 at Cambridge (5 tries not the seven quoted in the Cov match report Wink). I understand from knowledgeable supporters that this was almost a full starting XV for Cov so judging by comments above about the ND1/Champ differential, Coventry's full time squad must be somewhat disappointed at the result.

However there was good slick handling in Cov's backline with James Stokes being the stand out player. Coventry's Oceania players looked useful (Junior?? was one). I'm sure the squad was rotated throughout the game to give everyone a chance for this audition. In the second half George Oram gained yards time and time again to keep Covnrety in or around the Cambridge 22. Cambridge certainly disrupted the Cov line-out and showed some good defence but Cov kept up the pace and looked the business in the tight.

I was disappointed to see the Coventry coach has got CCS (Championship Coaching Syndrome) - challenging and shouting at the ref from the stands, standing up and gesticulating. As mentioned by Coventry supporters around me, the more you shout, the less the referee takes notice of you. Big smile

A good day out with a dry pitch, reasonable temperature (22C) and no noticeable breeze. Good to see the Coventry faithful making the journey - apologies for the A14!

I think Mikalcius steadying the ball for a conversion by Maisey says enough about the negligable breeze TBH.
I'd say it was close to a full strength squad, but with Purdy, Wallace, Forsyth and Halaifonua still to come in, it's probably debateable in some respects.

The core of the squad were very much last season’s core, with a few new players, key amongst them Rory Jennings at 10 at the start.
I agree with the comments about George Oram, from when he came on he had a massive ball carrying game. Stoked and Knox looked good to me - although I’m having to get used to his tidy haircut.

I’m not sure from where this idea of no wind came. It was a fair breeze from the start, getting stronger as the cloud came over. Maybe the stand was sheltered by the bar.

Where I was sat was sheltered by the clubhouse so there was virtually no breeze of which I was aware. I did wonder why the ball was held for the final conversion!

Very enjoyable match with some knowledgeable supporters around.

I understand the point, but I'd note that there are other teams in the Championship who set up some really challenging pre-season fixtures, such as Scottish playing Edinburgh, or Jersey playing Russia.

I hope that the obvious derision with which the Championship and Premiership Cups are being treated is enough to get them killed off after this year.

The game against Russia added huge interest locally in Jersey and I was surprised to note that a couple of other clubs turned the opportunity down. The match against OEs was always competitive and I remain convinced that the top Nat 1 sides can push most Championship sides - probably with the exception of Falcons & Trailfinders. A premiership A or French second tier team would seem to be the ideal pre-season fixture but I am really looking forward to the Scarlets match on Saturday. Even without their RWC players they should be outstanding. In Jersey if they really want to create local interest a pre-season match against Portugal might fill the ground at St Peter - particularly if they stock Super Bock in the bar!

Indeed, I would say that Ealing is in danger of having too much of a good thing. There are lots of positions where it isn't obvious who is the best player. In particular, they weren't able to put out their best props or No.8s to avoid battering the Nat 1 teams. In addition, finding the best 9/10 partnerships could be difficult. Jordan Burns/Craig Willis looked deadly last year by the end of the season, but you don't bring in guys like Shingler and Fowles on the side line.

Reds taught a bit of a lesson by Scarlets today. Visitors had 17 men absent due to the World Cup and another handful through injury but were still much too strong, scoring 7 tries & winning 17-49. Disappointing for the Reds but they should take a lot from it...

I thought Scarlets were far from strong but a lot smarter than Jersey today. Jersey mixed their squad up in both halves and probably didn't have more than 8 or 9 first choice players on the field at any point, Despite that Jersey's scrum were hugely dominant throughout and lineout and breakdown functioned well imo. Jersey's Achilles heel was the rush defence at 10, 12 & 13. Scarlets passed around the "rush" to the second wave and the Jersey wingers looked ever so lonely out wide. I hope Falcons watch this video and the Jersey defence coach has the sense to adapt the plan (drift?) because if I can see how obvious it is at my age Falcon's will certainly do it.

Scarlets were certainly more savvy & also very fast in more ways than one. A 16 man bench might have helped as well. I hope Kuki is not injured, I saw him on crutches later & hope that it was a precautionary measure.

The Scarlets outpaced Jersey in legs, hands and support play but I'm happy with the 3 tries we scored and dominance in some areas as CC described. In summary I think there are things that were pleasing and some things to aspire to.

Agree with everything said so far. I thought that the Scarlets line speed in defence was quite astounding, played on the right side of offside, but only just and came up as one at great pace. Was a pleasure to watch....just a shame that it was against The Reds.
I hope that the Scarlets player is ok. He was out cold for 3 or 4 minutes and it looked a nasty one. Fingers crossed that there is no lasting concussion.

Reds v Scarlets highlights:

Scarlets the better in attack. Reds better at the scrum and lineout.

Some great jackalling by Scarlets too.

Can't complain at the result, they were a step above the Reds.

That Scarlets winger Conbeer at 5:16 looks electric!

Blues 0 - 29 Cardiff

A dull game so far.

Blues going down the slope in 2nd half.

Referee hasn’t helped the game, not sure what the point of yellow carding us for a scrum offence in a pre-season friendly, just giving them the penalty try, amongst some other dodgy decisions.

Blues have gifted 2 tries in first few mins and then after a promising attack at the end of the half, which hasn’t helped.

Blues struggling without any centres and now the starting winger playing fly half.

Sounds like the real Blues took their better players off - what happens in pre-season friendlies.

Still, I would have expected a comfortable win for Cardiff.

We actually brought some better players on! Temm, Atkinson and a few of the new boys impressed in the 2nd half - Wrafter from Moseley.  The slope makes a difference and plus when you do not gift 12 points in the first few mins.

It's not much of a drop in standard when you are bringing on players like Olly Robinson, Gill (former Saracens), Dacey (played 8 times for Wales).

Biggest concern is that all 4 centres are currently out injured.

Got to agree, that is a worry, are they minor / major injuries? Will they be better by the start of the league games.....

I think league games they will be back (or at least 2), so it will be a case of getting through the cup. The only fit one was taken off with help in the 1st half.

Well at least there is some light at the end of that tunnel - I hate to see injuries to players (although inevitable).
