Loo competed well with a few key faces missing (not an excuse, the better team won) but were crippled with an inability to win lineout ball. At least 4/penalties were kicked to the corner (excellently by the new 10 I might add) only for the ball to be tossed away. At least of those ended up behind our own try line 2 minutes later for a 14pt swing! Not blaming our stand in hooker - played out of position and we got found out. Worrying to be honest. Penrith looked dangerous with ball in hand as usual, but the score could definitely have been closer. Loo down to 13 for a while too for 2 high tackles, one of which advantage was played and a try was scored followed by a retrospective yellow card. Prett disappointed to see our captain getting stamped on right under the refs nose at the command of one of the Penrith coaching staff - poor form all round that. No complaints about the result, polish a few rusty elements and get a couple of players back in and we'll do OK. Hopefully ------------- Thread Pillager |

Lineout was a worry last week Vs Lymm tbh & definitely needs sorting asap, if hooker can't hit their man we need to get someone who can. Didn't travel so can't comment any further, but Sten usually has it bang on... but a disappointing start for sure. ------------- Family-Rugger-Beer... |

Wilmslow deserved win in a good game with the backs looking good. Ref not great but a quick game on a warm afternoon. Oh and a fiver to get in. Some interesting results elsewhere but a long way to go. |

Northwich 24 Burnage 20 Burnage played well, again and unlucky to lose. Only the referee thought that the deciding try was valid. Hey-ho we move on and get ready for our first home game next week. |

Important win for Burnage , Port obviously competitive at Penrith position now clearer at both top and bottom but I think we need to give it another 4 games given the number of close games as well as the od odd thrashing. Watching from sunny Spain at the mo. |

Thanks Bigmal. A great day in the sunshine, a decent crowd and 11 tries. Additionally it was the annual memorial game for a guy who was a great personal friend and a great friend to the club. |

Two maximums at both the top & bottom. Looks like another year of anyone on their day can win. Good win for Loo vs manx, Bro pk ship 60+ point to Loo last week then go & put 60+ on Keswick, who I fear will have a long season. Surprised by Penrith at the top & Northwich towards the bottom. Big game for Loo vs Vale this Saturday, hopefully a bumper crowd to cheer the boys to a win. Loo 20 - 14 Vale of Lune Close, tense game. Vale play some rough stuff at times and didn't have that extra little something needed to get through a tough loo defence. Certainly knew there was a ref on the pitch. Whistle after whistle, including making our 10 retake a penalty to the corner for being a few metre off the mark. Rules is rules, but come on 2 early red cards for the 12 from both teams for a brief dust-up. Didn't see what kicked it off, but the Vale 12 did come over and shake hands shortly after they left the field which was good to see. Loo lost the other centre to a concussion in the 1st half too but had enough in the locker to take the win. Left a few nailed on tries out on the pitch too. On basis of results so far Penrith are certainly beatable having narrowly defeated a couple of challengers at home. Burnage appear to be doing rather better than expected whereas one or two others seem to have slipped this season. As suggested earlier this still looks like a league with the ability to surprise so lots of tight games with the added spice of lots of derbies?

Park 31-21 Loo. Too many forced changes for Loo today including three on debut. The boys gave their all but couldn't capitalise when we went ahead, both occasions park came straight back to score, not allowing us to quieten the game down. Always difficult to lose. But positives where there against a combative BP. In the forwards Guy Byatt carried like a f'ckn pit pony, backs, Darragh & Jonny Roberts were outstanding & the new 13 looked good. The ref was indeed " very unobservant", even basics right under his nose. Loo wr on fire from the off, total control & the BP secured before ht going in 29-8. Sometimes tho 3 on the bench isn't enough, as we'd emptied it 5 mins into the 2nd half. Injuries to key men & wounded still on the pitch brought several reshuffles allowing Burnage back into the game & at on point looked like only one winner, especially when sir, some 30yds back didn't see the most forward pass yr ever likely to see to bring Burnage within one score. We needed something to change momentum & it came in the unlikely shape of our no11, who melted some lad in midfield who spiled the ball. Nervous finish for Loo support with some dodgy decisions, but a great game. Can see how Burnage rack up point, terrific back line, left wing is rapid, but the quickest lad is probably the no6 who scorched in from his own 10mtr & no-one could get near the fella. ------------- Family-Rugger-Beer... |

Wilmslow going well but a lot of close wins. Penrith dropped off only to be replaced by others pushing on. Teams in top 60% still closely matched albeit Douglas look to be in good fettle. Still everything to play for. |

Interesting game between local rivals this we. According to Port site a young side competed well against a more powerful Park xv last week but to no avail. Ex Park stalwart Rick Haslehurst will have been disappointed. Not many contributions from other teams on this thread but plenty of interest and a long way to go. The result on Sat morning could set the tone for the day.

Another tough challenge ahead this Saturday with Altrincham Kersal the visitors. Weather forecast is for rain & with the ladies playing Wasps beforehand I hope the pitch hold up for a good spectacle. We have played near every game thus far with a different back row & back line for all the usual reasons, injuries & other commitments etc. We wait for Friday's team announcement & hopefully we can get some consistency of selection. I'm assuming you weren't there RC. It was ridiculous. Of course the loo players infringed, it was the regularity of the whistle and the total lack of consistency from the official that cost us. At one point the ref looked at the Northwich defensive line, waved them back from offside, Northwich turned the ball over, he looked at the loo defensive line and immediately blew a penalty for offside! I think criticism of refereeing in the bar, post match is almost inevitable. But I suspect we all get the "rub of the green" on occasion. Certainly some Burnage members were apoplectic about the referee's performance after our game at Waterloo. However, I think continuing that on here, well after the fact, is quire poor form. We were dissatisfied with the referee at our away game at Northwich. A Northwich supporter berated the referee post match. The referee (bless him) offered the guy the number of the secretary of the referee society and recommended a refereeing course. Oddly, the bloke backed down really fast. |

A very gritty win for Loo over a strong AK side. Very similar gameplan to Birkenhead - kick to touch and roll the maul from wherever it may be. The rolling maul must be the most polarising play in rugby - possibly in all of sport! It's great fun when it's your team doing it, but almost nothing worse watching the opposition roll away from the halfway line. Interestingly (to me at least), I've just noticed that out of Loo's 8 games played, 5 of them have been against the current top 6, 4 of which have been away - our next 4 games include all of the current bottom 3, so it will good to see where we lie after the fixtures hit the halfway mark. It's obvious but Wilmslow look the team to beat, not impossible, if it were at home I think there'd be more of a chance. All depends on availability, but I can't foresee many leaving Wilmslow with a win.

So it appears that Warrington have indeed been evicted from "the fortress". I didn't realise that when Loo played them at a different ground, that it wasn't because of pitch problems, but in fact their new home. Their cricket club landlords have turfed them out in favour of a "more lucrative" local footy team. Wire have now got themselves new digs at a RL team further north in the town. Having played against them many years ago at their old home ground with a wooden hut style clubhouse - I always found "the fortress" to be a bit soul-less. I hope Wire settle and are happy in their new home. I also hope that the actions of said cricket club bites them on the bum. |

Was/is the "fortress" next to the Manchester Ship Canal? If so I made my first team debut there for Macclesfield in 1967 - we lost and I was out of my depth BUT I do recall being called up to play so late that I was forced to leave a newly poured drink on the bar which I finished after the match. It was either Guinness or that non PC favourite of the time a black and tan. Coming back to the modern world is the new ground where several players from Warrington also play league? If it is then we need to censor this thread in case any sensitive souls from the south are offended by the thought of being tainted by association with the "lesser code".

Very worrying LF although at least the first team win.Not close enough to the action to comment but according to website there have been injury oroblems. Good win for Burnage and this league continues to throw up surprises. Perhaps as well we dont have a predictons league! May be at Wilmslow in a couple of weeks so will be interested in their performance. |

Port and Burnage in action this coming weekend - the winner moves into play off territory whilst the loser remains safe-ish mid table. Both sides had good wins over the weekend although on paper Burnage take the honours for the better performance. Any forecasts....

The only forecast I can submit is that I will be there, being entertained by the Stockport President with a few other former Burnage Presidents. It’s worth noting that we've had a good run of results over the last few seasons, so fingers crossed !! |

I suspect someone will have more detail than I can supply. However, here's my sketchy and brief account. In the 70's/80's they had a great clubhouse and ground "somewhere" in Warrington. If I remember correctly, local vandals set fire to the clubhouse and as a club Warrington decided to move on (hopefully getting some money for the ground) They moved into a soulless sports centre which they shared with cricket, hockey, squash and ??. They haven't been happy for a few years. It seems they have up sticks and moved to share a ground with a local rugby league side - hopefully a happier union |

No doubt some of you will be aware of fact that South Leicester has withdrawn from Midlands Premier following a string of heavy defeats culminating in a 240 points to 0 reversal ( that is 35 converted tries!!!) Not that long ago the club was in N2N. This is a clear warning for the game in general and our level and below in particular. Once the SL backer withdrew 30 players no longer wanted to play because they would not be paid( apparently). Last week Port couldn't raise a 2nd team whereas 40 years ago the club ran 5/6 teams playing a 30+game season. This is not the only example of the drop in popularity of the sport particularly amongst "recreational" players. I know clubs pay in our league - my question is what would happen if such payments stopped? Where would local players go? There are 6 teams in a S Manchester ( for want of a better term) cluster so if ALL these clubs were non payers the options for average players would be limited. Personally I miss the buzz of a full clubhouse with all players mixing freely but those days have almost certainly gone mores the pity. I'm actually interested in what the current players think. Is this level appropriate for payment?

Another close win for Wilmslow who will tae some catching I think ? Burnage definitely the dark horses this season - Mike were you actually hiding your light under a bushel with your early season comments on Burnage's prospects? Very close in the middle third as well. Quite an exciting competition this tear with quite a few close games and no silly scores.

My early season concerns remain in place - although improving slowly I’m concerned about our defence. I missed yesterday’s game due to domestic arrangements, it would have been the first time i witnessed a win at Vale of Doom. Birkenhead Park, Gentlemen’s and Old Boys Christmas lunch next Saturday. The weight of expectation will weigh heavy on the team’s shoulders. |

I may go to Wilmslow next week as I'm staying in the town ( or is it still a village?) and Port are away. From what I saw v early in the season I think you are spot on LF.

First post I’m here - so be gentle! Just want to say a big thank you to Northwich’s hospitality on Saturday. After a couple of pre-match memory lapses (no shirts 🤦♂️) it was great to see them uphold the core values of the game, which is some cases are leaving our great sport. It was a tough match both on and off the pitch as has been the case every week this year. I wish all clubs a restful break and looking forward to more good contests in 2020! |

Fair comment for a first post - welcome to this " band of brothers". Watched Wilmslow v Keswick Sat . 3 pm ko so under lights . Keswick kept going and scored a cracking try near the end but Wilmslow were just too powerful for the visitors. Not as good a game as W v Stockport earlier this season but then it was a cold December day. Always nice to stand by the fire in the clubhouse and see some old faces. Port at Wilmslow in the N Year and on basis of Sat results the home side strong favourites. |

Wire 18 Vale 21 Wire much better side we were lucky to get away with the win and nearly stole BP last play of game. Great to see Wire have a new home. Hopefully it will be somewhere they can build some roots. |

Really good performance for Loo today vs Broughton, kicker didn't bring his boots so a fair few points left out there as well. Bad injury for Joe Bowmer (looked like a broken elbow or similar) - best wishes for a speedy recovery Finished the game with no.7 on the wing and no.8 in the centres which isn't ideal! Great win for Stockport opens things up a little bit but its all so close - Birkenhead in 2nd for a long time, lost 2 on the bounce and now down to 6th! For those wondering about the penrith v Keswick postponed games, big Richard Atkinson, universally known as Biggus had a fatal heart attack just as the team was leaving. In those circumstances the game was cancelled. For those that knew him he was the life and soul of Keswick. Rip big lad. Our commiserations to his family Geoff Penrith rufc |

Sad news indeed - puts things in perspective somewhat. Never played Keswick but commiserations to family and friends. I'll save my comments about this week until later given the circumstances. |
