Do any clubs have pre-season plans?

Although the preparatory work had to take place (mostly) behind the scenes, Cov & Jersey have been looking to stage a game this weekend - and it's on: KO at the Butts Park Arena is at 2pm tomorrow (Sat). And it's possible to watch online, albeit the attraction of watching England box-kick to the Italians may be the preferred option for some, esp as £9.99 cheaper. Details below:

I realise that there are two rounds of the Trailfinders Cup to go & a few others already lined up:
  • Sarries v Donny tomorrow 4.15
  • Cov v Sarries, Sat 20/2 3pm
  • Eal v Donny, Sat 20/2 3pm
  • Sarries v Cov, Fri 26/2 6pm
Getting fixtures against Premiership opposition is challenging, so the options appear limited...

Not impressed with the view to the railway/Broomfield Park corner (keep missing the action there) and the cameraman needs to move a bit quicker at times, but early days.
Good to see a bit of rugby, whatever.

Yes it was a good match, plenty of good tries and I think Cov just deserved it after scoring 6 of the 11 tries. Both clubs' Twitter accts made it 34-33 at FT

The stream was a good picture with replays, team-sheets and decent commentary. Shame the scoreboard lost track in 2nd half, but that's what pre-season is for to work these things out.

I fully agree with this and full credit for the way both teams and the match officials approached the game. The streaming quality was easily the best I've experienced with pin sharp picture and the commentators did their best but probably need someone from the visitors in there. I would have loved to have been on the touchline crunching the advertising boards but money well spent in my book. Thanks to Cov for hosting it all and safe flight back tonight lads.

I understand that there was a Jersey guy nearby, who did help out with some of the player questions, but there were so many changes it must have been impossible to keep up!

Yes, I was somewhat confused when Cov's score went up by a conversion's worth when I could have sworn the flags stayed down.
Maybe it was shown wrongly on the screen.
It'll come out in the wash, not that the scoreline matters much at all.

Is this a player welfare issue? If the Nottingham pack have had no competitive scrums/mauls/full on tackles before they play Ealing should this be a concern? Full time v part time has happened for some time in the Championship but never with the part timers having had no pre season friendlies.

My thoughts on Bedford game:

We were in complete control of the game for first 50, then tapered off with our 2nd XV (or in fact 2nd XIV) in the last 30 after Ampthill gained set piece superiority when the 18 year prop came on.
Our backs looked v slick and will cause every team in this league problems. We are definitely going to chuck it around this season!
Most of the saints lads looked good. Tommy Matthews looks a real class player at 10 and Tui Uru (no 8) was probably the stand out player in the first half.
Oli Curry completely needlessly got sent off and will likely miss the opening couple of games through suspension; not really something we can afford. If I was Mike Rayer I’d be absolutely fuming as the amount of effort and money to get this season on, and he throws a wild punch in a sodding pre season game meaning he’ll probably miss 20% of the season!
We definitely lack depth in a few positions so it’s crucial we keep our first choice props (McCarthy/Paul), Onojaife, Rich Lane and possibly even the saints number 8 available all season.

Overall, pretty happy with what I saw and optimistic if we’re able to field something close to our strongest XV most weeks then we can push for “best of the rest”.

Afraid it was Islander - very nasty injury to Pat Howard caused a 15-20 minute delay. Had to be stretchered off. Fingers crossed for Pat.

I thought Donny were excellent considering they’ve only played a couple of matches. Their pack was dominant at times which is quite something given how strong the Ealing scrum has been. They also put us under a lot of pressure and forced quite a few errors.

However Ealing have a get out of jail card with their rolling maul which is a real weapon. shame we had to rely on it so often but when things aren’t quite clicking it is a go to option and they all count at the end of the day!

The real downer though was the Pat Howard ko, I love watching rugby but every time i see a player face down out for the count it really tests my conscience. I pray it looked worse than it was.

Trailfinder that maul is phenomenal it is by far the best I have seen in this league for many years. Clubs will have to remain squeaky clean and avoid the penalties, those penalties were our undoing.

Ealing Trailfinders team to play Richmond in a pre-season friendly on Saturday 27th February at the Athletic Ground: A relatively young squad, and it looks like the presumptive starters are all taking a break. Interesting to see that Harry Casson is playing, as that would tell me that (unless he is coming back from an injury) he has been pipped to his shirt by some of the newcomers.

Ealing 33 (5t) - Richmond 24 (4T) FT - Not sure what to make of this, Ealing started their 2nd team with a sprinkling of Academy lads, but Richmond are obviously amateur, so I think that Richmond are probably going to come away happier form this than Ben Ward's men.

Pirates 14 (2T) - Jersey 6 at HT. Pirates playing with more flair, Jersey looking strong in the set piece. From a neutral, both teams look well drilled. Agree GJ, Ampthill good for the win, too many penalties from Bedford in the first 25 minutes meant they took that 19 point lead we gave them the opportunity to. On a positive, we looked good in parts, but rusty, if we gel well as a team then we will be very hard to beat. I thought the live stream was excellent this afternoon, well worth the £10.

The referee didn’t have any excuse for rustiness either.

Bit of a weird match, Blues clearly using it as a practice, while Ampthill wanted to win. If felt like Blues were pretty dominant but need to work on the breakdown and sometimes making the extra pass from some of the younger Saints players.

Blues were looking to run it all the time, so should be pretty entertaining to watch this year. Clearly the players were still getting used to playing with each other.

I agree with all of this. Pirates well worth the win today but will need to beef up their forwards before Sarries next week. The Pirates fly half was exceptional and work rate throughout exemplary. Jersey's fringe of ruck/maul defence was really poor today which in part explains the G861 remark about quick ball. The commentator today ascribed the fault to the Pirates scrum half try to the centre not guarding the ruck but surely a Prop or Flanker MUST GUARD the fringe of a breakdown not the centre who was marking his oppo. Jersey forwards did their job in scrum & lineout but they sorely missed a real open side flanker going forward. Jersey selected a back row today with three lads who could all have played No8 - strong defensively but going forward Pirates had the edge imo. I agree with G861 about the Blue Shirt - in St Ouens I wore Red.

Believe it was Adam Leal. Very experienced but better than the Frenchman that did the Wales v England match.

Ah yes... looks similar to Garner.

Did he do the match last week as well as I heard on the ref mic him mention something about last week?  I couldn’t watch that match.

My dog would have been better with the whistle than Gauzerre!

I understand England are not going to complain - but a sound track of Butler/Davies should be sent to whoever appoints referees.

Pirates 10 was Luke Scully, who only arrived a few days ago on loan from Cardiff Blues. Very impressive.

I’ve also seen the ‘England won’t complain to WR’ line, but why should a review of dreadful officiating need to stem from one of the competing teams? You’d hope WR would review officiating as a standard matter. We wait to see when M. Gaüzère is next appointed to a meaningful fixture...

Also the TMO or whatever they're called for "I can't see a knock on"
Didn't even refer to the best camera angle to make the decision
It's a tough old world but that should be the end of their international officiating - just incompetent no other word for it
