Despite the huge amount of time we have waited for rugby I fear that the league will be really skewed this season.

Doncaster, Ealing and Sarries have been able to train throughout and have played a number of competitive games. The rest of the clubs will have very poor preparation going into the first few games . .  so should be expect cricket scores and lots of injuries?

How many pre-season games will each club have? As contact training has had to be limited?

Most clubs, because of the cost of testing, have limited themselves to 30 players in a squad, if there are injuries and they need to add players what are the protocols?

Bedford and Ampthill meeting twice, one home and one away.
Obviously Premiership clubs not available and National 1 clubs still not playing. So no Cambridge option for Bedford.

Friday evening the RFU wrote to all Championship clubs saying they were not to play any National League sides pre season.

The Championship is regarded as " elite" sport. Hence why they were able to play in Feb.
I understand talking to my source at a National league 1 club, they received the same some weeks before.

So the question is ... How do sides like Richmond, Ampthill, Jersey play players in the 2nd xv's to get them game time, or if they are coming back from injury or if they have been dropped.
Many clubs are part time in the champ now, you could have 2 people working in the same office sitting next to each other all week, only for them not to be allowed to play against each other on a Saturday,

We all know that Richmond run a 2s ad 3s in the Zoo leagues. So how will they play players in those sides that have had no game time ?
Also how are those sides going to get a pre season fixture or even train?
Because they are classed as and train with an "elite sport squad". You cannot train with the 1st xv on a Thursday night and one set of players be ok to play sides that are not elite on the Saturday and the other set of players not be allowed to.

They have again not thought this through.

The next point will be how can a side in National 1 receive loan players from a side that is classed as "elite"
If they cannot play against each other how can they then loan a player to them.

Blackheath have announced a loan deal with Ealing, Chinnor loan from many sides every season, Cinderford use Gloucester, Plymouth would not get a side out without Exeters younger players, Taunton the same with Exeter, sale with Sale Sharks, Stortford with Saracens the list in National 1 is endless, with most sides having "loan players" in their xv's each week.

How can "elite" sportsman play and train at full time clubs in the week, but be ok to go out on loan on Saturdays to clubs they cannot even have a fixture against pre season!

I'd like to know peoples take on this!

I would imagine for example Premiership players loaned to National 1 clubs  are season long loans so they would train with that club.

Sorry, nothing is a season long loan!.

What if the mother club has injuries, player is recalled, simple!
And also, there is not one National 1 club full time, so what does the player do, train 2 nights a week and play X Box a lot during the day?

Sorry but the players train all week long at the mother club and are loaned out at weekends, only to return on Mondays.. Yes the agreement may well be to loan this player for the season, but you can bet as much as you like he's training Monday to Friday where he is paid.

Probably wise not to as well given the players will have had such a long time off below the championship. A few injuries from the games against championship clubs in normal pre seasons gone by.

So how will an "Elite" player registered to a Championship club be allowed to go out to a Nat1 or Nat2 club on loan or via dual registration?

Posted By: Halliford
Date Posted: 22 Jul 2021 at 22:36
That is being discussed at the moment but it may be at the discretion of the parent club and how they intend to use the player. Players won’t be able to do 3 or 4 matches then return to the parent club for 1. Loans and d/r will have to be season-long or in long blocks, as I understand the current thinking.

You have a 19/20/21 year old.
In his first year at a Pro club, that's is getting told.

We will pay your wages, don't bother turning up during the week. just rock up and your loan club on a Tuesday and Thursday night for a couple of hours.
Monday to Friday get your X Box skills up!
Oh by the way as none of our coaches have seen you train with us, we cannot push you on or improve you. Also as most clubs are, we are in the position to be able to pay your salary for you not to turn up!

What a load of rubbish.....

The NCA/NLR to whatever they call themselves are better of to say there will be no loan/dual reg players this season as we cannot mix Elite and non Elite sport.Get that out there now, not wait till the week of game one!

It will cause some major problems for some sides, Plymouth, Taunton, Chinnor, etc because they have the max allowed most weeks, but it will make it a better comp and a level playing field!

Flipside of that argument is that these youngsters will not actually play any rugby for 12 months.  Very few players get thrown into a Premiership game without having played at a lower level on a loan/ DR basis.  Louis Lynagh is one exception that springs to mind, but look at how many of the current England squad have Championship experience.  Maybe ring-fencing will change this - the idea that no relegation means no pressure and more chance to experiment - but for clubs chasing the play-offs or European qualification I think the onus will still be on experience when it comes to selection.

So that opportunity to farm youngsters out - and the Academy coaches do watch them and report back - is vital to their development.  Whether they need to sweep so many young players up and put them into academies rather than letting them play for their school or local club, thereby removing all enjoyment and making them a product of the system, is another argument.  One criticism of the Championship is that it doesn't develop England internationals, but that's impossible when the academies hoover up any and all players who are anywhere close to county standard by the age of 15.  And I bet sides like Plymouth, Taunton and Chinnor (in fact, every club in the National Leagues) have suffered as a result of the best local talent being harvested by the big boys.

Posted By: Rabbie Burns
Date Posted: 23 Jul 2021 at 14:23
Completely true Mark and it goes lower as you can imagine county sides have players from further down the pyramid so some never get any chance of natural progression. It’s also interesting to look at how many starting Lions have National League experience

Discussions are taking place. It is likely that long-block or season-long loans will be allowed and how those players train from Monday- Friday will be down to the parent club.

And they'd continue to be terrible for a long time. Look at what happened to Harlequins RL in the other code when they had a closed shop. The last few seasons, they just took pounding after pounding to the point that relegation was probably a welcome relief.

Raider you raise an interesting question. The RN are not elite as defined by the RFU ie not playing in either the Premiership or Championship. I am sure the Champ clubs/Nat 1 clubs who arranged pre season fixtures with eh other but then had to cancel them and scramble around for replacements would be very keen to find out how/why this game has been sanctioned. To be honest the RN 1st XV, especially at the beginning of the season, is nowhere near the standard of Pirates so it may be a Pirates Development team rather than their 1st XV squad-which would be allowed. A Coventry side may well be playing the Army in March but it will not be their Championship 1st XV and hopefully by then all the testing at elite level will have disappeared.

Dropout, I was responding to Marigold when he suggested the fixture would be permitted as Pirates could play a ‘non’ professional ie Development XV vs RN. I was merely stating that the Pirates do not have such a thing.

As you state they did play players from neighbouring clubs in previous cup competitions but I would suggest this would not be permitted currently as if there cannot be pre season friendlies between the pro game and semi-pro then surely guest players are not allowed either?

CQ they will have to have their own players surely. Leeds Beckett play in the BUCS Super League which is a very high/tough standard. Nat One is tough and getting tougher. It would certainly be against player welfare considerations for players to be regularly playing two matches each week.

Ampthill have announced two more preseason friendlies and it comes as no surprise to see the opponents are Bedford. The first game is at Dillingham Park on 28 August with the return match at Goldington Road on 11 September. Apart from being a stern and therefore useful test against what looks to be a very much improved Bedford squad, both clubs should bank excellent gate and bar receipts.

What a game.  Jersey nearly score at the final play but 28 v 28 is a result that will get us invited back.  So good to see ProD2 v ChampRugby.

Wow just seen that last turnover and breakout, great chance to win the game at the death but I guess a draw was a fair result.......

It was a belting match at La Rabine tonight, a privilege to have been among the 2,960 crowd. So proud of the way the young/new-look Reds side hung in there in the first half, battled back in the 2nd and then could have won it in a pulsating mad-cap last play when the match could have been won and lost by both sides but eventually finished 'as you were'...

A cup competition between ProD2 and Championship teams would be brilliant and generate big crowds and lots of us travelling to some great places. Unfortunately the RFU don't have any desire to back anything that would be a success, it seems they want The Championship to fail.

A great idea . . but RFU has no interest in investing in Champiosnhip

Does it have to be the RFU to organise?  Yes, they need to sanction but not necessarily organise?

Jersey might do really well in the French D2. There could be some brilliant away trips. I wouldn't want to miss the curry and cow pie at Castle Park tho.

I agree there would be some excitement in this type of competition... but it's an entirely unrealistic concept sadly - Pro D2 sides already play 30 games from end of August to end of May, followed by a couple of rounds of play-offs.

Some more Reds v Tigers info - including team line-ups - in http://spark.adobe.com/page/Drlc84gKQbB1X/" rel="nofollow - the online match programme

The game is being streamed live for anyone who can be away from the grindstone by 5pm. Info https://www.jerseyreds.je/news_article/live-stream-option-for-tigers-and-sharks-pre-season-games/" rel="nofollow - HERE . The cost is £10, which has been described as 'extortionate' by the admin on the Tigers Fan Group page on FB. Another way of looking at it would be a host club providing a service to those who can't attend and charging a fee to cover the costs of so doing...

FT Reds 7 Tigers 17. Both sides left a few points out there, it was certainly committed altho' also a bit scrappy with all the to-ing and fro-ing with the bench. But a good hit-out on a lovely sunny evening
