HT report. Bedford 3-0 Coventry. An absolutely awful game of rugby. We have dominated possession and territory as Cov knock the ball on every time they get it. We’ve completely butchered a few tries and really should be 15+ up. Still down to 14 for first 5 mins of 2nd half (and v lucky it wasn’t a red). We’re still giving away a huge number of penalties. I can’t think Cov will make so many unforced errors in 2nd half and if they cut them out I don’t see us winning.

Congrats pirates!

Neither team deserved to win the Bedford Coventry game. I actually think Coventry deserved to win it less as they really only got into our 22 twice and didn’t make a line break all game. Bedford knock on over the line and countless penalties ultimately cost us, although deciding penalty was v dubious.

Not sure Cov had to be any better. They only played against 14 men for an hour! Was unable to watch but the penalty count sounded madly uneven! And 3 yellow cards to none seems unusually one sided.

Well played the Pirates, but remember Saracens only have to be in the top 2.

Agree with Bluesman 11, why would you collapse a maul when you’d come through the middle, got on the ball and going forwards, surely it would have been our scrum at worse. Hey ho, such are the vagaries of rugby, and we did give far too many penalties away, butchered 3 or 4 clear cut opportunities trying for a miracle pass, roll on next week.

Brilliant result for Pirates, just brilliant, well played, and Bedford are above Sarries in the league too 😂😂😂

So you should be. What a fantastic result for Pirates. That’s got to be the biggest upset in this division for years, if not ever. Just looked and 7 of the Saracens team that started in the European semi-final last year started against CP today. In total there were 12 players from the matchday 23 against Racing that were involved in the game today. This notion that Sarries had a weak team is garbage. Pirates should get all the credit in the world.

Don't forget, all you Bedford fans complaining about the 3 yellow cards, Bluesman's comment about the one five minutes before half time - very lucky it wasn't a red.

For a tackle that was a turn head down and drop on his head, Bedford are very lucky not to have lost a player for 35 minutes red, and a few weeks ban too.

The next yellow may have been a little harsh, but I have a strong feeling that may have been the hapless Hamish Smales trying to make up for his previous error.

How Blues lost that game I am not sure. I expected to lose before the game but Coventry barely got out of their half for most of the match.

Not sure why we would get pinged at scrums for early engagement (very 1st scrum) then Cov do the same and we have 3 re-sets.

The referee even called that the Blues player had the ball in the maul and then he gets penalised for bringing the maul to the ground!

Also not 100% convinced Tupai lost the ball before sticking it on the try line, it was hard to tell from the camera. He then copied in his dad’s footsteps with the yellow.

Camera angle selection was pretty poor (one seemed to lose colour) but I am sure will get better. Best part of the commentary was when it went silent for 5 or so mins.

Blues fans ignoring the massive forward pass leading to the knock on over the line. The player passed it outside the 22 and the scrum half caught it in the 22. I was screaming at the telly for that. Good job he dropped it. Pretty even game. Reason for yellow cards was repeated offending in the red zone. I think a few Cov fans feel we got on the rough end of some decisions as well. Not a game that will last long in the memory but good to have rugby back and glad we got a win. Good luck Bedford for the rest of the season.

It's a result the majority of community rugby fans want. If Sarries don't get promoted this season, it will force the Old Boys Club to continue with promotion/relegation.

Looking at the league table, Sarries must be pleased there is no relegation.

Your 6 came through the middle fine, but then collapsed the maul, so nailed on rather than dubious.

The next yellow may have been a little harsh, but I have a strong feeling that may have been the hapless Hamish Smales trying to make up for his previous error.

First card was because he landed first on the shoulder, then to the head which mitigates it from a red to a yellow.  Another ref may have given a red card, but I actually think he was correct if what he described was correct in fact.

Second penalty - he'd just warned the teams that, because of the penalty count and field position, next one would go.  There were two offences there - 4 (binned) collapsed it but 17 had also gone in the side. Both within 10m of the goal line.  Silly.

The last one was just reeated infringements and the ref told them they could keep giving the penalties and he'd keep carding.

No errors.

There was an obstruction on the way there as well, in front of the bench, which was pretty obvious and missed, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Some slightly one-eyed views of the match from some Blues supporters which is only to be expected I guess.  On balance they managed the game slightly better but couldn't turn pressure into points - which is, I believe, how the outcome of games are judged.
I thought they were pretty cynical in the second half when Cov started to actually catch the ball and apply some pressure.
Both teams will improve immeasurably over the coming matches, and with no relegation let's just celebrate the fact that we had some rugby to watch...

True Rob, I think that we lost with the last kick of the game from a penalty I/we felt hard done by provoked the one-eyedness. Like you say it was great to see some competitive rugby again, and to be honest, it wasn’t a game either set of supporters will remember for long, not a classic, let’s hope both sides improve on the performance.

As I saw it at the time your player came through the middle onto our ball carrier - perfectly legal as the ref said at the time - but he was then deemed to have brought the ball carrier down - not legal.  A replay or the opportunity to watch the game again would have been nice...RFU.

To be fair it's unusual for Mr Smales to give us anything during a game so we'll take it, on another day it might have gone against us.

The referee said on the mic that Blues 6 had the ball in the maul, he went down like he can do and then got done for collapsing.

Cov’s defence was good and quick and never got penalised for offside (despite looking it) whereas Blues were pinged offside all day. Just a few inconsistencies.

Both were rusty not helped by the first 20 mins on injuries. Before the game I expected us to lose, so was pleasing that was a game where we should’ve won comfortably. Neither team really got their attack going, with Blues showing a few glimpses.

It would be interesting to see viewing figures on all the games.

I'll just add one thing... my wife, an enthusiastic, but by her own admission not an expert, Rugby viewer asked me where the offside line was because she couldn't believe how quickly Bedford were up whenever Cov had the ball.  Perhaps they were just too quick for their own good. Wink

So far it looks about how I would have expected. Ealing with the BP before the half, and able to make meters at will with ball in hand. Ealing defense has been a bit over-eager and that allowed through one notable Nottingham break, and has led to a number of penalties, but they've kept Nottingham from capitalizing.

...and that's how it ends after 79 minutes. Yes, you read that right. Sir decided the game was over a bit early, everyone was confused and milled around a bit. Ealing were just better drilled, more physical, and faster than Nottingham. Not a surprise given that they are professional and had 9 preseason matches after drilling together since August while Nottingham is semi-pro and a lot of their team arrived in the past few weeks.

Full time

Ampthill 17 Knight 19

A very tight game, quite enjoyable. Ampthill earned that point. Our pack really took control last 20 minutes. 4 points I will take that - we need to be slightly less scrappy

You seem to be ignoring the dodgy penalties that went your way. Can’t remember Bedford being called for offside very often. I’m as one eyed for Cov as you are for Bedford and I realise that I might not agree with all the decisions. Personally thought the two pens for your first six points were very harsh but you win some you lose some.

I agree with castleparkknight. A Good start. A draw might have been fairer.
