TBA                        Mond 3-3 Sarries  Local derby so in my dreams probably a close affair

Saturday

1.00pm                 Blues 0-4 Jersey Amended following team announcements

3.00pm                 Donny 3-3 Pirates Surely one of the games of the series hoping for 5-2 either way

5.30pm                 Notts 4-1 Cov Another match that could go either way.

Sunday

3.00pm                 Ealing 5-0 Pury Banker

Bedford 4-1 Jersey - Still worried about Bedford’s pack with both tightheads and Onojaife injured. Not sure if any of Jersey’s back absentees will be back. Going for a tight blues win
Doncaster 1-4 Pirates - Game of the weekend. Hoping Pirates come out with the win to keep the pressure on Ealing and Saracens (can’t see Doncaster beating either)
Nottingham 0-4 Coventry - Nothing to change my view that Nottingham will finish bottom
Ealing 5-0 Hartpury - Ealing to rack up another 50+ score
Richmond 0-5 Saracens. Richmond to put up fight in first half before Sarries pull away

TBA                        Mond 0-5 Sarries  Sarries get their internationals back, and I think they've whinged until this is now moved to Sunday to give them more time to rest. Not that it looked like they played much against Ireland anyhow.

Saturday

1.00pm                 Blues 1-4 Jersey I've not been impressed by either team, but I think that Jersey has the better experience and it will start to come together here.

3.00pm                 Donny 1-4 Pirates Will be interesting to see how Pirates fare after some key injuries, but I think that they'll be too strong for Donny, even after a 6 hour bus ride.

5.30pm                 Notts 0-5 Cov I'm starting to struggle to see Nottingham winning a game this year - thumped by Ampthill today. Coventry played very well in first half vs. Ealing.

Sunday

3.00pm                 Ealing 5-0 Pury - Ealing at home on the plastic pitch will take care of business unless it suddenly finds itself playing Gloucester, though given how bad they are, it may not make a difference.

With 28 first team squad players out yesterday, I doubt Gloucester are in any position to bolster Hartpury.

Predictions:
Mond 0 v 5 Sarries
Bedford 4 v 0 Jersey
Donny 1 v 5 Pirates
Notts 1 v 4 Cov
Ealing 5 v 0 Hartpury

Would expect Sarries and Ealing to pile on the points. I don’t think Jersey are the team of old and Blues should win at home. Nottingham have looked mediocre so far so I would expect Cov to do a number on them. I think Pirates have looked better than Donny in their 3 wins so I would expect them to make it 4 out of 4. If the Knights win this weekend then we could be real contenders.

Sarries moved the game from Friday because it now clashes with the six nations finale. They won’t have the England players available because they’re all contractually obliged to have a rest weekend regardless of whether they play Friday or Sunday. I’m all for Sarries bashing but I think accusing them of whinging to get this game moved due to the England players availability is wide of the mark and I would suggest they will be plenty good enough to dispatch Richmond without them.

There's still a really angry anti-Saracens posse - noticed this when we (Jersey) played them in round 2, quite a lot of of people who'd never previously followed the Reds or interacted with us on social media piling onto social media posts and stirring up all the politics with high levels of bile. I'm not defending Sarries in terms of what they were convicted of, but am inclined to want to get on with things now that they have taken their place at level 2 and the season's underway. But some people have long memories - still plenty of people west of Offa's Dyke chuntering about Andy Haden taking a dive out of a lineout 43 years ago...

Agreed. Remember the Mannetjies Roux tackle on Richard Sharp in 1960 something?
Still considering my predictions. It is more difficult currently because some teams are still finding their feet, while others are almost in mid season, based on number of matches played (who? you ask). I expect an evening out to occur, although perhaps Saracens will surge ahead. I hope not.

Richmond 0-5 Saracens. A good result last weekend for Richmond but still.....
Bedford 5-2 Jersey. I envisage a close but high-scoring game with home advantage telling.
Doncaster 1-4 Cornish Pirates. The Pirates might have peaked during their first game of the season but I feel they are better equipped than Donnie.
Nottingham 0-4 Coventry. I think Coventry will grind out a win in this Midlands derby.
Ealing 5-0 Hartpury. Another home win, probably by 50 points again.

Richmond 1 v 4 Saracens Hope Sarries have an off day
Bedford 4 v 1 Jersey Bedford more enterprising but if Jersey get it together could be other way
Doncaster 1 v 5 Cornish Pirates Not seen Doncaster so going by results
Nottingham 1 v 4 Coventry Coventry looked good in first half against Ealing. Not seen Nottingham.

Bedford 4 v 1 Jersey Bedford like their home patch and Jersey to suffer again
Doncaster 5 v 2 Cornish Pirates Donny's form to continue, confidence is high. Plenty of tries.

If you are still referring to the Pirates/Bedford game I wonder if you actually watched it as there were seven tries in that game and only two were Rolling Mauls, one to Pirates and one to Bedford.

I thought it was a general observation that Rolling Mauls would be the cause of a high quantity of the tries across the weekend - but then I am trying to be glass half full, rather than half empty.

I am looking forwards to the Knights vs Pirates clash this weekend where we will hopefully be having fast flowing rugby, no injuries, good officiating and we widen the gap on Sarries (Sorry CC I still feel that they have not received punishment for their improprieties, yet, and an additional season down here would just about suffice).

It wasn't a comment particularly on the Pirates vs Bedford game, and yes i watched every minute of it.  It was more an observation of the comments from all games really.  Seems to be the route one, safe option to score a try which is a little tiresome. I feel I must respond to Bedfordian's comments on scoring tries from rolling mauls, even quoting Ampthill in his comments. If Ampthill get a penalty say on the half way line, and kick to touch to get an attacking lineout only 5 to 10 metres form the opposition's try line, then win that lineout, form a rolling maul, and stroll forward and score a try, then I for one am a very happy bunny. Scoring tries is what it is all about and Ampthill are skilled at this ploy. So they use it.

What Ampthill don't do is kick for goal when in range. Now that would be tiresome.

They do have a Good kicker. He seems to nail conversions. But I am convinced that if Ampthill were playing Saracens and the score was 0-0 in the 79th minute, and Ampthill get a penalty bang in front of the posts, they would kick to touch to set up a rolling maul.............

I'm also minded to now predict a Jersey win as well mate but I think the Jersey forwards will be the key difference between the teams  even with a back row without a natural open side flanker in the Jersey side.

Blues (2 tries) 17 - 20 (2 maul tries) Jersey

Blues were up the slope into the wind, will be very pleased with the halftime score, with 2 good tries.

Looks like Jersey have gone back to what they know and away from a more expansive game from the last 2 years.

Referee could be more communicative to stop some of the penalties for both sides, like telling players to they are in the side of a maul to leave it or for Jersey when they kicked a few were in front better referees would tell the players to stop advancing.

Bedford giving away pens at every scrum. Until at least one of our senior tight heads get back from injury it’s going to be a massive struggle to win many games as, I don’t want to single out the poor fella, but the current tightheads we have available are unfortunately out of their depth at this level. So essentially, every knock on on the half way line becomes a lineout in our 22. Feels like we are basically starting every game about 14 points down (especially as we can’t defend mauls...)

I would disagree with that Prowse had done really well and looks solid considering he would be 3rd choice, it is 4th choice where we then struggle.

We are just lucky that Jersey took 5 mins mins to work out 3 man advantage means that they should have a huge overlap.

Blues back up to 14 now.

Blues 17 - 25 Jersey

Blues accepted defeat and took 3 for the losing bonus point.

Blues 20 - 25 Jersey

Only real comment is with no relegation and no chance of promotion from 2 sides, only 1 side wanted to go outside of their forwards. There may be a reason in normal times why some clubs have seen their crowds decline.

Personally I have no issue with a maul, Blues have used it too, but there is a difference to using it as a weapon and relying on it as the only weapon a team can do to get any points.

2nd half wasn’t helped by the Blues tighthhead being carded at a maul, the replacement was binned within 5 mins from a scrum and then we had 5 mins of debate of what should happen, putting the Blues down to 12.

Referee lacked any communication with the players which added the start stop nature of the game. The better referees would have advised players to not go in, or to get out and would have stopped penalties and yellow cards etc.

Back to basics for Jersey to get a much needed win with super game management.  That will help with confidence and I'm sure they will build on this going forward.

The only thing I will say on the maul is that I don’t think it’s coincidence Bedford consistently comfortably average the highest attendances (ex prem club) and are renowned for playing expansive rugby. You’ll get your core supporter base who will watch every week come what may and a subset of these supporters use forums like this. But the casual punter will be put off if the brand of rugby is stale. There are plenty of these types of supporters at Bedford, but they are unlikely to be the sort who come on rolling-maul. So whilst you as a poster might not care, you might find your club attracts more people which will help them in the long run if they try and play good rugby.

As others have said, other than the top 4 I don’t understand why teams don’t try and play a bit more expansive, entertaining rugby with nothing at stake this season. Our tv deal has run out and the league is in desperate need for sponsorship and exposure, but we won’t have to worry about losing tv rights at this rate...

Whatever works for everyone though and ultimately a maul try and a 90m try are worth the same number of points. I know that, personally, I don’t get the same level of enjoying from both and would rather Bedford lost 40-35 with some great tries than won 7-6 with a maul. If Bedford ever learn how to defend them and/or score them then maybe I’ll change my mind eh? Been waiting 15 years but I’m sure they’ll have fixed it for next week if you ask the coaches...

Looking forward to the Doncaster Pirates game, hoping that will
be a good advert

Not sure why Pirates didn’t get a penalty try there. If he doesn’t tackle him high he’s definitely scoring

agree with this and yes it was an ugly win, but when you are on a losing streak (only 2 competitive games this season, but another 5 more in 2020 pre-Covid) then the result is everything, and yes of course you're going to play to your strengths. Reminiscent of March 2016 Cup Q-F at Goldington Road when the Reds won 15-19 and scored multiple mauled tries. Some Blues' supporters have never forgiven us, even tho' our next 2 visits to GR were absolute thrillers featuring 138 points, 10 Blue tries + 9 from Reds (mostly from backs). Hard lines Blues... or should that be hard cheese?!

A good match so far updates for yellows:
Pirates tip tackle but a tad harsh he did go over vertical so his responsibility to bring down safely
Knights Jerry Sexton high tackle player was on way down but it is what it is
Knights Guido Volpi- collapse maul??? Couldn’t see it but sir could

I am a Blues fan and not a fan of the maul. However you play to your strengths. Bedford backs had the ball 3 times in the 1st half scored 2 tries should have had a 3rd but for wrong option. Jersey made the decision at half time to keep it tight and fair play to them. The one criticism I have will the rolling maul is the referring off them very seldom are the attacking side penalised for early drives/ break aways

That is a serious win for Donny. We don’t beat Pirates very often at all!. Didn’t watch it but sounds like a fantastic game. Just wish both of these clubs were actually given the platform to go for a place in the Premiership. Both would be great additions. Sarries we’re coming for you!.

So it's Donny 17, Ealing & Pirates 15. Ealing have a game-in hand... as do Ampthill, who are =4th with Bedford on 6pts. Any other contenders I should have included?! Wink

Well for a brief period the Knights are top of the table on 17 points

Ealing yet to play are on 15 as are the Pirates

Bedford and Ampthill on 6

Sarries are on 5 but played 2 games less

A rest for the Knights next week, then we are home/away to Jersey bring it on

Interesting contrast in styles at GR today when imo both teams played to their different strengths. Jersey seemed to have a clear edge in the forwards but Blues were the only team with any real spark and pace in the back line. The key reason why Jersey won today however was probably not the relative efficiency of their maul or strength in their forwards but the Blues lack of discipline and the yellow card count.

Didn't realise there was such an award? Doesn't really matter how many nominations you might have the main objective of every competitive sport is to win. If you can win in style great but if not you play to your strengths. Yes it would be nice if the sole purpose was to entertain the punters but history is not on the side of gallant losers. Most, if not all players, enjoy winning more than they do scoring nice tries

Posted By: Bluesman11

Pretty sure the sole purpose is to entertain the punters. Professional sport only exists for this reason

Bedford discipline is certainly an issue, but one of my bug bears is getting yellow cards for repeated scrum infringements. This isn’t indiscipline, it’s not being very good at scrummaging. It’s like yellow carding a centre who keeps missing tackles or dropping the ball. The prop that got binned for popping up in the scrum wasn’t trying to cheat, he just was being outscrummaged by his opposite number. Them the rules but I’ve always thought yellow cards for technical scrum offences are harsh.
