In the professional game just how important is the skipper on the park? Not just making the best decision on a penalty but motivation, leadership and hazelnut kicking?

Maybe a pointer is Martin Johnson injured and Neil Back took over as captain of England, pretty disastrous!


This is an abstract query, nothing whatever to do with any particular side!


In the 'old days' it was the 10 where possible but now often a forrad.
