More great news coming out from DMP today, club stalwart prop Ralph Appleby resigns for next season for 13th year with the club - amazing that Ralph who has played more than 300 games for the club since 2008, and almost 100 in the first 15.

Not bad for a lad who I am told is still only 30ish.

Given Nat 1 and Nat 2 structure is staying the same for 21/22, clubs taking part in those leagues are known and there is no relegation from the Championship would it not be a good idea for the fixtures to come out soon so that clubs can plan pre season /pre-season friendlies plus any other potential fund raising activities they might wish to run. Not sure the reason for having to wait? Halliford- any thoughts as the man in charge is at your club?

Date Posted: 13 Apr 2021 at 18:43
I believe that John Inverdale mooted that we will get a fixture list in May for the N1/N2 leagues for 2021/22.

I think they are waiting to see that the roadmap is progressing as we can't even have scrum/maul training until at least Stage 3 of the Government roadmap, with full contact matches no less than two weeks after so no non-adapted law games could take place until 31st May at the earliest anyway.

I'd rather wait a month and know we have a more settled schedule than get a less settled schedule early. Hopefully we could get some friendlies going late July/early August so we can then stay after the game in the clubhouse to watch the Lions Tests.

I have seen a schedule that says we will have fixtures by the end of April. Clubs’ special requests went to the NCA in March so there shouldn’t be too much delay. I’m not aware of any Level 3/4 Clubs folding yet.

Another great re-signing for DMP with BIG V - Talite Vaioleti carries on for his 9th or 10th season at DMP in excess of 140 1st 15 appearances.

Seasoned in the 2nd or Back row the powerful Tongan international has for the last couple of seasons also expanded his skill set to cover front row. There must be at least 5 years left in V at prop lol.

Amazing to see V re-signing a real character and an all-round gentleman.

DMP going for an invite into the Championship next season? Where are the other Nat 1 Teams and their news? Or are they saving it up for the closed season?

P.S. I wouldn't complain, as I would love another northern area club in the league - being a travelling supporter all those trips to the big smoke gets me down.

Hmm. Re-signing players that only made sixth, and twenty plus points off promotion last time out? Wink
Doubt that'll turn all that many heads. You need to evaluate any new signings first, surely?

Re-signing core players may not turn heads but provides a great base to build from. Same players in seasons before finished higher than 6th and maybe bar Hartpury and Coventry they could of or should of been promoted.

On that - another re-signing -

Brandon Asher-Wood the electric South African Winger has signed on for next year also - fantastic player to keep a hold of -

Kimbo the point raised is they are looking at keeping their core squad and taking some action to be in a state of readiness for the season ahead. Unfortunately, I am not seeing much movement by other clubs yet, and if they are doing so they aren't making it public knowledge. If that is to continue (unlikely I know) then a solution would be as alluded to previously.

Tongue in cheek and all that.......

Another re-signing.
One assumes there will additional, better, players too?
I was rather expecting to see DMP mounting a challenge before now.
Unless the pandemic has truly caused a severe hiatus in the ambitions of the other clubs, then the old sporting adage of 'standing still is going backwards' could well be self-fulfilling here.
Still, there's plenty of time, so maybe not all is lost yet.

The issue you have is that the championship haven’t finished this season and will not have released players or recruited any for next season so there is probably a lot of players unsure what is going to happen next year which probably adds to the inactivity in Nat 1. Players who joined for last season haven’t played yet so the likely hood is if you were happy with your signings for last year and they have agreed to stay this year probably won’t be much movement

Come on Kimbo...... a little to early in the process to be trying to get bites from us? I am sure there are new signings on the horizon however all about a good solid core and backbone.

I'd be exceptionally surprised if they weren't tbh.
Although with only 10 teams in the league it probably doesn't need to be quite so deep!

Completely agree - impossible to plan or develop a competitive squad. RFU is so focused on ringfencing the premiership its beyond belief -

even if you just look at the front row requirements - it seems every Prem team need 12 props in a squad excluding academy as seemingly a modern day prop cant switch from tight to loose or vise versa. Regardless that at the start of the game the ref calls all front rows - hooker, tighthead or loosehead. In the case of injury you should be able to cover.

It seems the RFU and Premiership are trying to make Champ and bellow, amateur level at best and dare I say it even all leagues to be local level only

https://www.mowdenpark.com/news/mowden-resign-fisher-2612705.html" rel="nofollow - https://www.mowdenpark.com/news/mowden-resign-fisher-2612705.html  Dave Fisher has also re-signed for next year, always playing with his heart on his sleeve

Both gentleman have developed some core routes in Darlington now with young families, this is where our level of rugby should be heading people you want to be there.

Any playing debating their future for next year looking at the current retentions of the DMP core squad they should seriously consider a move up north.

News I hear is 2 development squad back rows and a 2nd row are moving up the west cost.

Mr Knox is moving on along with 2 backs I can’t recall the actual names but for what I can remember is it a centre wills/Willis maybe and a utility back (sorry no idea of the name)

Any chance you could confirm any of these?

Nah. No recruitment (or otherwise) news whatsoever.
I'd be surprised if Knocker moved very far, although I wouldn't be all that surprised if he did move on, assuming a few of the missing backs become available for next season
As for back-rowers, that's certainly our strongest suit this season (even if two first-picks were unavailable yesterday; injury for one and out for the season, and new baby arrival for the other, so hopefully available for the Jersey trip unless he's suckling Wink).
It'll be interesting to see the size of the squad given the reduction of league size.

The Chinnor side to play Esher today in a behind closed doors friendly under the adapted laws. Only Kieran Goss was a regular last season, although Oscar Heath made one substituute appearance

Rhodri didn't make a particularly good fist of his time at Cov even though he played 7s for Jamaica while there. Had a few games and was loaned to Nuneaton.
However, I liked the lad, and he's clearly done OK on his subsequent travels, so good luck to him.

I liked him, Cambridge were blessed for 9s though, with Kieran and Finn, so he only got 6 starts last season. I seem to recall his family were from Hampshire, so they will have an easier drive to Esher.

What was out there yesterday for Chinnor is what they have at the minute I believe? I would presume/hope there will be some strong additions added during the summer? Other wise it will be a horribly long season when it comes around.
A tad embarrassing being beaten 33-0 at home regardless of what team/squad was out there. Unless Esher were extremely good?

My personal view is that his versatility is his problem. I am seeing him as a 15, although he faces stiff competition there. Obviously he can cover 9 which gives flexibility in terms of replacements. I am delighted he is with us, one of a number of Level 2 and 3 players already joining us for next season. Our side at Chinnor was about 50% of a 1st XV, IMHO. Looking forward to this week’s replay!

Hardly a game of touch was it? However by the sounds of it Chinnor must be glad that there was no scrums or mauls. Especially if that was Esher at 50% of a first team squad.

Interesting definition of "local" there, it being about 45 miles from Darlington to Corbridge.

Darlington Mowden Park are delighted to announce the signing of Tom Broadhead ahead of the 2021/22 National One season. The young scrum half joins from Northumbria University and becomes DMP's fourth new signing of the summer. Asked about his switch to the Arena, Broadhead said: "I’m excited to be joining DMP and look forward to getting the new season underway!"

Broadhead signs having been an integral part of Northumbria's last BUCS Super Rugby Campaign in 2019/20. Speaking about the latest addition to his squad, DMP Director of Rugby Garry Law added: "We're really pleased to have Tom join us after his time at Northumbria Uni. He is definitely the kind of 9 we like at DMP and will fit in very well. He will add real competition to the group of scrum halves we have for next season."

Agreed. It would be funny if a young player, perhaps after watching a Joe Marler interview, said "I'd love to play for [insert nearest Premiership club here], but one step at a time. Maybe next season – onwards and upwards!"

Yes, considering it is not so long since the Club was sold and the new owner halved the playing budget.
Maybe players are appreciating the difficult financial circumstances that most Clubs find themselves in and accepting reduced incentives.

My understanding was the reduced funding was outside the 1st team and in other areas of the club

I'm very happy with the signings. We have often been shorthanded in the front row department so, with Ralph and Alfie re-signing and these new additions, the scrum might be an area of strength this season.

To the best of my knowledge, Gerald Quinn is on the Board of Directors and the club is still owned by members.

I don't want to cause any issues here but Fake Shemp's DMP website report is from 2018 when Quin joined the Board at DMP. The Northern Echo report and the postings under 'Darlington Mowden Park Sold' are from 2020 and,  they report that the Club is now sold to Quin.
I can't imagine that there is any reasons to withold the facts so, could some one confirm what the facts to date.

From what I understand a proposal was put to members in an AGM in 2020 which allowed Mr Quin  to take control of the asset (stadia etc) and take ownership control of the club. A number of changes have since occurred senior officers (MD etc) leaving the club.

The club launched a new community team DMP Elizabethans which plays separately from the 1st XV in the local league structure.

It could be there is now 2 separate clubs operating - one which may have the ability and backing to become a championship level - professional potentially, which would be completely separate from minis juniours elizabethans etc which would remain a amateur community level club. I believe a number of championship clubs operate a similar model?

Sid don't let it worry you!! The Northern Echo as per usual printed what they thought was going to happen without checking their sources first. Ged is indeed a board member but has not bought the club, circumstances have changed since the Echo guessed what may be happening. Best wishes to you and Ionians enjoy your forthcoming season.

I am not worried. Simply concerned for a good northern Club.
There are definitely conflicting messages eminating from the north east with regard to the actual ownership of the Nat 1 Club.

Did DMP split the 1st XV and stadium off s separate companies from the member owned club?

It would not be a stupid thing to do, as if one goes bust, and we have seen that happen, the other is saf.

There are VAT benefits in separating team and the pitch they play on, as well as other tax benefits from separating team from club, as well as the legal protection.

The grounds and stadium were sold to businessman Ged Quinn last year in order to pay off crippling debts. Yes it's a members club, but without assets. A long way from the millions they got from the sale of their  Yiewsley Drive ground. Some say 4 million, some say 6, I don't  know.

They gambled on the local council building a sports village on their site, but that collapsed.

Do you remember a scrum-half at DMP called Adam Nixon?  I believe he played one year straight out of university, around 2015/16 before heading to Guernsey.  Just signed for London Welsh.

I do vaguely but think it may be around 2014 same time as Sam Stuart etc trying to fill the void left by Zylon McGaffin if I remember correctly? But I am happy to be corrected if my dates etc are incorrect.

Darlington Mowden Park are delighted to announce the signing of Isaak Welch ahead of the upcoming 2021/22 National One season. The young centre joins from French side Stade Niçois and has already linked up with his new teammates ahead of the new season. Asked about his switch to the North East, the 20 year-old commented: "I’m looking forward to getting involved at DMP, and excited for a new challenge in Nat 1!"

The former Exeter Chiefs Academy player becomes Mowden's eighth new arrival of the summer. Asked about the latest addition to his squad, DMP Director of Rugby Garry Law added: "I believe Isaak to be a very good fit for our squad and backline in particular. He brings a couple of attributes that we have maybe lacked in this department so I'm looking forward to seeing Isaak get up to speed and make his mark this coming season."

From the footage on his http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN8wQDN9jxc&ab_channel=IsaakWelch" rel="nofollow - YouTube highlights video , he looks able to play 10, 12, and 13, which is very useful versatility. He appears to be a hard-running player who can distribute the ball well, including out of contact. Additionally, as a left-footed kicker, he could be asked to kick to touch on the right side of the field, with Warren doing those kicks on the left side.

Not sure that is the case Rabbie. These certainly were not announced for last season:

Ross Gladdish - Back row
Marcus Kershaw - Back 3
Tom Georgiou - Centre
Harry Dugmore - Back Row
Jake Hennesey - 10/12
Fergus Jemphrey - Winger
Andy Denham - Wing
Sam Evans -10/15
Oliver Walliker- Hooker
Oli Evans - Centre

Leo Fielding, Mark Cooke and Tom Baldwin will be at London Scottish next season, Tom Burns is going to France, Luke Peters will be at Esher, Craig Dowsett is moving to Saracens Amateur, and Mike Perks will be at Richmond. Alex Pickersgill, Steph Liebenberg and Ben Ransom are retiring

Looks to be a pretty strong squad on paper. Full squad details on the Club website

Moseley sign brothers Sam McNulty (hooker) and Isaac McNulty (centre), the former from Cov, the latter from Ayrshire Bulls in Scotland.  Both were coached by Mose coach Pete Glackin at Coventry College.
