Predictions:
Bedford 5 - 0 Ampthill - Will be a great game but in front of fans at GR I think Bedford will finally produce an 80 minute performance and comfortably beat their local rivals.
Richmond 1 - 5 Coventry - Even though Cov got a drubbing against Sarries they should still have enough quality to defeat Mond who have faded a bit in recent weeks.
Saracens 5 - 0 Hartpury - This is just the fixture you would want when you have shipped 50 points at home... I don’t envy Hartpury this weekend, at all. This could be painful.
Jersey 1 - 5 Cornish Pirates - Jersey have really struggled against the top 4/5 teams this season and I expect that to continue this weekend, Pirates have regained some momentum in the last couple of weeks. Reds will play better than they did against Coventry but don’t think it will be enough.
Doncaster 5 - 0 Nottingham - I’M GOING TO THIS ONE!!!. I expect Donny to finish a great season on a high note. We need the BP win to guarantee third and I think we’ll get it. Nottingham will compete well but I think will be overpowered at the end. Donny by 6 tries to 3. 45-24 prediction.

Bedford 3-3 Ampthill. I have absolutely no idea how this one will go. All competitive games in the last 2 seasons have seen Ampthill triumph, but Bedford’s game will click eventually. So I will sit on the fence and predict a high scoring draw.
Richmond 0-5 Coventry. Richmond were a very ordinary side against Ampthill. An on the rebound Coventry will gradually ramp up a bonus point win.
Saracens 5-0 Hartpury. Good luck, Hartpury. The only plus I can see for the away side is if Saracens rack up a quick 50 points and then replace all their internationals.
Jersey 0-4 Cornish Pirates. Two solid sides but Pirates have enjoyed the better season.
Doncaster 4-1 Nottingham. Nottingham have improved all season but Doncaster have remained consistent and should deservedly secure 3rd spot.

Bedford 2 v Ampthill 5 Amps roll on against under-achieving neighbours
Richmond 0 v Coventry 5 Cov to bounce back after last week's drubbing
Saracens 5 v Hartpury 0 Pury will do well to keep it under 80
Jersey 2 v Cornish Pirates 5 Pirates to nick this in the sun 24- 28
Doncaster 5 v Nottingham 0 Donny to round off great season in style

Date Posted: 26 May 2021 at 10:03

Bedford 2-5 Ampthill. Should be a real cracker but Amps to win by 6 tries to 5
Richmond 1-4 Coventry. Cov to win a tight match by a handful of points both sides scoring two tries.
Saracens 5-0 Hartpury Sarries to rest ALL their first choice players but still win by 5 tries to 2.
Jersey 5-2 Pirates. Hoping for a festival of rugby in the sun down south in St Peter with Jersey just edging it by virtue of converting one more try than Pirates (both teams scoring 5 tries) Is anyone coming over from Kernow?.
Doncaster 5-1 Nottingham. Donny to cap a wonderful season in front of a horde of fans with a bonus point win scoring 5 tries in all to Nottingham' s 4

Bedford 2-5 Ampthill - I hope that Bedford is allowed a decent number of spectators to watch what is sure to be an exciting match. I think it will go very loose by the second half, and will be a beautiful spectacle.
Richmond 0-5 Coventry. Cov have the perfect fixture to bounce back on. Richmond have been rotating a lot to give their second 15 game time this season as a community club should, but it hasn't led to the best outcomes week on week.
Saracens 5-0 Hartpury - Sarries likely to rest players to match Ealing. I still think that they get 9 tries to Hartpury's 1. Hartpury's defense was woeful vs. Ealing earlier in the year.
Jersey 3-3 Pirates - In honor of CC, I'm going to pick a 3-3 draw for the last match of the season in Jersey. I'll actually be in Cornwall, so sad it isn't in Penzance from that point of view.
Doncaster 5-1 Nottingham - Nottingham have really gelled in the last few weeks, but Donny have built a very tough side and will put on a display for the faithful.

I think the last thing it will be is loose - at least if Ampthill have any sense.  All they need to do is watch the Notts match - keep it tight, plenty of scrum and kick to the corners and let Blues' inability to cope with the mauls and scrum do the rest.

I thought Ampthills definition of loose was to let the inside centre run the crash ball instead of the back row forward. (-:

I always remember those matches as being fierce physical encounters. with the backs there to take advantage of the holes the battering opened up. On the other hand, we won some of them. But if we want to rekindle that rivalry, we will need to be promoted. I do not see them coming down for a while

A beautiful sunny day in Bedford which might suit Bedford rather than Ampthill. Let's see. I cannot be there unfortunately so relying on the live video feed here in sunny Harrogate.

Not sure what happened for the Bedford try but Ampthill storm back with a try of their own.

Bedford 7 - 7 Ampthill

Ampthill give away their customary early penalty and Bedford, rather boringly, go for the posts.

Bedford 10-7 Ampthill

Posted By: Cherub
Date Posted: 29 May 2021 at 14:13
And that last move sums up Bedford's season. Attacking and attacking, but then knocking on.

Posted By: Cherub
Date Posted: 29 May 2021 at 14:15
And again. A fine Bedford attacking move with the final pass going behind the winger.

Posted By: Cherub
Date Posted: 29 May 2021 at 14:20
And finally Bedford manage to finish an attack and secure their second try.
Conversion missed.

Bedford 15-7 Ampthill

Absolutely no idea what just happened but it is one red card for Bedford and a yellow card for Ampthill.

Posted By: Cherub
Date Posted: 29 May 2021 at 14:34
And Bedford immediately do what they have been trying to do all season and that is to score a near length of the pitch try.
Simple conversion missed.

Bedford 27-14 Ampthill

Posted By: Cherub
Date Posted: 29 May 2021 at 14:50
Have just watched a replay of the sending off incident and with my very solid Ampthill hat on it was absolutely nothing. It didn't even warrant a yellow card.

Posted By: Cherub
Date Posted: 29 May 2021 at 14:59
My halftime thoughts are this. Ampthill should win as they have the extra man and the forwards have played better than the Bedford pack, securing several turnovers. They have also wasted some fine try-scoring opportunities which I think will not be repeated in the second half. But...if the Bedford backs get the odd yard they will be dangerous.

Converted.

Huge pressure by Ampthill sees a yellow card for Bedford with Ampthill immediately securing their 4th bonus point try.

I was told by a friend watching, he was being held on the floor and kicked out anS made contact to the head. Cherub I think said earlier in the thread it was harsh?

I half wondered if it related back to one of those friendliest where he was sent off against Ampthill.

Stamping on someone’s head. The Ampthill player was antagonising him, but no excuse. Saw it live, looked deserved but not seen replays.

Could be a lengthy ban. He’s a very lucky boy if he’s already signed a contract because he could miss half the season next year. Mike brown got 12 weeks reduced to 6 for pretty much an identical offence. Curry’s disciplinary record is poor (his 2nd red of the season, other for punching someone in the face, plus some yellows) so can’t see the same leniency applied. We can’t afford to carry a player that misses so many games through suspension.

It matters somewhat as it determines who gets the 2nd leg at home. Sarries will be given a 20-0 win which will see them finish top.

Agree with everything you said CC. Great entertainment yesterday. Both sides gave it their all and a 1 point margin on the pitch is probably a fair reflection of the game.
Wonderful to see the handful of Pirates supporters over and great to see the Pirates players make the effort to go over to them at FT.

Indeed they might. However, we’ve seen from pre-season and early season that they are not quite the same formidable force without their key internationals.

Find it highly improbable that Saracens might allow contracted players to go on a pre-Lions training camp (albeit in a most desirable location Wink) rather than play for their employer in a brace of games which will determine whether they return to the top flight after a season 'below stairs'...

As to home advantage, I've seen a suggestion that, regardless of who finishes top, Ealing might want to play the first leg at home as they would potentially sell more tickets when it starts 0-0, whereas Sarries may prefer the option of 'finishing the job' at home.

I don't believe there is anything in the Champ regs about 20-0 or 28-0 or 4pts to 2pts etc award for Covid abandonment & even the theoretical possibility of the Hartpury game being staged next w/e, although that seems pretty unlikely. The organising committee will decide, apparently, so I expect we'll hear from them soon...

If Hartpury were to lose by more than 43pts they would slip below Nottingham in the table & finish 10th.

If they use the same points system as in the Premiership, then cancellation would see Sarries awarded 4 points on a 0-0 tally. Thus Ealing would finish first with 45, and win the points differential by 1 as well. On the one hand, it isn't how I'd want to win. On the other...C'mon, they have 5 British and Irish Lions, and probably a bigger budget than the rest of the league put together!

If they used the same format as the Championship in 2019/20 (& all leagues below), Sarries would be ranked on their average match points per game thus far of 4.44, leaving them behind ET who have registered 4.5. There are various options for us to speculate about...

Cracking end to the match and the season for a neutral.
Says it all really. Winning matches by a single point is hopefully habit forming. I was at the last one in Penzance:

Brilliant entertainment by both teams - safe journey home to Kernow lads.

Match report including some stats analysis of narrow victory margins in games between the Reds and Pirates (there have been plenty):

Verdict:

For immediate release: Monday 31 May, 2021
Issued on behalf of The Greene King IPA Championship

Greene King IPA Championship Disputes Committee Decision: Saracens v Hartpury University

The Greene King IPA Championship Disputes Committee made the interim decision to postpone the round 11 fixture between Saracens and Hartpury University RFC [originally scheduled to be played on Saturday 29 May], after a small number of Hartpury University players tested positive for COVID-19 and the need to isolate several more players in accordance with the contact tracing protocols.

Further to the interim decision, a Disputes Committee meeting was held to determine next steps.

The Committee considered the specific facts of this particular case, relevant regulations and supporting documentation and concluded that the match should be cancelled. The Committee concluded that the match should be considered as a 0 – 0 draw, with no league points awarded to either team.

In light of the facts, the Committee considered Hartpury University RFC were not at fault for the cancellation of the fixture and noted that the only reserve weekend available for the Championship is 5th – 6th June. Hartpury University RFC confirmed they were not able to play that weekend as players still isolating under COVID-19 protocols and some injuries mean the club is unable to field a squad. While the positions of the clubs in the league table was not considered to be a relevant factor in determining the outcome of the cancellation, it was noted that the effect of the decision would not undermine the integrity of the competition.

There is a right to appeal.

A 0-0 draw doesn't affect the integrity of the competition?

If the RFU had any integrity before, it's certainly lost it now.

Utter joke.

I'm not saying I agree with the verdict, but the meaning of what I've highlighted in bold is clear, isn't it? Whatever the 'pools panel' result & whether Sarries get 0 points (or 2 or 4 or 5 or 100) they and ET are the top 2 and will contest the PO.

For what it is worth the history books will show EALING TRAILFINDERS top of the Championship ( subject to the two legged play off )

Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

A pretty weird decision, I thought a default 20-0 would have been a little harsh on Sarries! Tbh I hope that Ealing decide to have the first leg at home anyway.

Worth absolutely nothing mate whatever the table shows is totally irrelevant but I still hope Ealing make a real contest of the play offs.

Just to be pedantic for the fun of it - last season it was calculated as average points in home matches for outstanding home fixtures, and average points in away matches for outstanding away fixtures, so Sarries would be awarded five points.
