Redruth's powerful open forward play wins the day against Leicester Lions.

Leicester Lions started their 2021-22 season with an away trip to Redruth in Cornwall. West Country rugby has a reputation for teams with strong packs.

Reds started taking the game to Lions, almost scoring during the opening phase of the game.

Lions then put some play together pressurising the Reds’ line, but could not break through the Reds’ defence.

Reds then opened up their game putting Lions under pressure scoring three tries by No 8 Sam Stevens (17, 29) and scrum-half Jack Oulton (32), a conversion and a penalty by Fraser Honey, all in the first half.

Half-Time: Redruth 20 Leicester Lions 0

Redruth continued their driving forward play after the break and added their fourth try by Jack Oulton (49), converted by Fraser Honey.

Lions showed some resolution by coming back into the game towards the end of the second half with scrum-half James Stubbs (75) skipping past the Redruth defence for an unconverted try.

On 79 min Reds’ Jack Oulton was yellow carded for a technical offence.

Final Score: Redruth 27 Leicester Lions 5

A well contested game, with a deserved victory to Redruth.

Lions head coach, Gareth Collins, said, “Redruth made a good start with some effective open forwards play. Lions stuck well to their game and much to their credit they came back to compete and score in the second half.”

Next week, on Saturday 11th September 2021, Lions open their home season playing Clifton at Westleigh Park, Blaby, with a 2.00 pm kick off.
