Gone are the days when this was just a bit of fun. I now feel under enormous pressure

Ampthill 5-2 Hartpury. I have learnt that whereas Ampthill have the ability to score lots of points, they also concede lots. I am going for a home win, with a likely score of 51-49.
Jersey 4-1 Cornish Pirates. An intriguing fixture between two solid and professional Championship sides. I just think home advantage will be the trump card.
Doncaster 1-5 Ealing. I think Ealing will grind out a 4 try bonus win, but I think Doncaster can also score 4 tries. This is probably the pick of this week's fixtures.
Bedford 5-2 Nottingham. Bedford play so much better at Goldington Road and I am a great admirer of their running backs. Nottingham though will not roll over.
London Scottish 1-4 Coventry. One day soon LS will claim their first win. But I don't think it will be this week. A reasonable Coventry performance should see them over the line.

I can see two possible upsets. Doncaster might upset Ealing's donkey cart, whilst London Scottish might upset the mighty but currently under-performing Coventry.

Predictions
Ampthill 5 v 1 Hartpury - At home Ampthill should win this one. Hartpury have faded a bit recently.
Jersey 4 v 1 Cornish Pirates - This should be a great game, very little in it i would think.
Doncaster 4 v 1 Ealing - I’m probably being a homer but if we carry on how we’ve been playing at home so far, a Donny win is a real possibility. At the very least, we’ll push Ealing all the way.
Bedford 5 v 1 Nottingham - As usual with Bedford, a points-fest is in store.
London Scottish 1 v 4 Coventry - Scottish may sense an opportunity here but I think Cov will just about do enough.

Ampthill 4-1 Pury - Should be close but I think Amps will win at home by 4-5 points
Jersey 4-1 Pirates - In my dreams Jersey by a single point and the sun will shine - it could happen.
Donny 4 -2 Ealing - At home Donny to edge it by a couple of points and kick a shed load of pens but Trailfinders score 4 tries
Blues 5-1 Nottingham - Bedford backs run the show
London Scottish 5-1 Coventry - Scottish overdue a good result and Salad to get a hat-trick of tries.

Ampthill 4-1 Hartpury. This could be a tight one and go either way - home advantage takes it.
Jersey 4-1 Cornish Pirates. Going with Home advantage but quite a fixture
Doncaster 1-5 Ealing. Ealing will probably have enough in the bag - Knights would have to keep their noses clean (low penalty count) - sustain rock solid defence - and patiently build up momentum to have a chance of winning. TBH - I cannot see that happening but I will be there cheering the knights on.
Bedford 5-1 Nottingham. Bedford are masters of the slope
London Scottish 0-5 Coventry. Although misfiring occasionally I think Cov will have done their homework and take this one home.

Ampthill 5 - 1 Hartpury - Ampthill are finding their form, and scoring loads of points. I think that they'll continue that at home vs. Hartpury.
Jersey 2 - 2 Cornish Pirates - From an Ealing supporter perspective, I'm hoping for this outcome to minimize the table points for our nearest rivals. 4-1 to Jersey more likely at home.
Doncaster 1 - 5 Ealing - I reserve the right to change this depending on line ups. Ealing has a lot of injured players, and I'm not sure what squad they can put out for what is sure to be a tough test.
Bedford 5 - 1 Nottingham - From what I've seen, Bedford is worlds ahead of Nottingham on the field, even if not especially far on the league table.
London Scottish 0 - 5 Coventry - The exiles are on their way to being unexiled, and that is the only good thing for them this year.

Ampthill 5 - 2 Hartpury  - Very hard to call this one
Jersey 5 - 2 Cornish Pirates - MOTD - two excellent teams . . home advantage in front of a passionate crowd
Doncaster 0 - 5 Ealing - Ealing need to be on their game, still should be a cracker
Bedford 5 - 2 Nottingham - High scoring try fest
London Scottish 1 - 4 Coventry - Cov should have too much but have stumbled along so far

I would caveat all of the above my saying that I dont think I got one prediction right last week!!!!! Hopefully no injuries, great weather, lots of tries and no dodgy decisions!!!!!

I'm as baffled by that one as you are mate a simpler solution seemed to be to charge a lot more for tickets on the gate and have a single gate selling them with a long queue. It seems to me better to encourage punters to buy tickets on-line if it makes business sense rather than simply turn people away.

There's an ongoing track-and-trace requirement for those staging events in Jersey and that's the prime driver behind the 'advance tickets only' directive...

Ealing Trailfinders starting XV - Ealing team to play Doncaster at 1430 tomorrow. This is not the team that I would want to see put out for what I think is one of the top two or three toughest matches of the season. I would love to see Will Davis in the front row, and Matt Gordon in the centres, as well as Al-Jiboori or Digby at 6. Northcote-Green was extremely underwhelming at 6 last week, and looked gassed after 30 minutes. JCR is a stalwart coming out to the wing, and great under a high ball, but I'm not sure he has the wheels anymore to really outrun Doncaster's wings. Also, surprised not to see Burns on the bench. On the plus side (and it is a big plus) Uzokwe is fit enough to play after going off early last week. Wish I could get up to Doncaster to see the match.

1. James Gibbons

2. Shaun Malton

3. Lewis Thiede

4. Bobby De Wee

5. James Cannon

6. Max Northcote-Green

7. Simon Uzokwe

8. Rayn Smid (c)

9. Craig Hampson

10. Steven Shingler

11. Luke Daniels

12. Reuben Bird-Tulloch

13. Max Bodilly

14. James Cordy-Redden

15. David Johnston

Replacements

16. Jan-Henning Campher

17. Dylan Smith

18. Kyle Whyte

19. Simon Linsell

20. Malon Al-Jiboori

21. Stephen Kerins

22. Craig Willis

There be pirates ere!

And most welcome they are. For once, we will not be playing in 20 degrees plus heat (well, perhaps in F not C) and the wind will be blowing hard. Should be a cracking game....can't wait!

The half time score at Ampthill is Ampthill 5-29 Hartpury. Hartpury have scored 4 tries with the wind in their backs. Hopefully Ampthill can do better with the wind in the second half.

Unfortunately I will not be able to keep you up to date in the second half as I am being dragged off to the local village Xmas market and to see the lights switched on.

How did our boys get on in the second half? FT score suggests a close game in the end, although perhaps the weather was the cause of that.

A strong wind always mars a rugby match but today there have been some cracking results with Doncaster and London Scottish vying for team of the week. I am not anti Ealing Trailfinders. It is just they are such hot favourites to win this league that it is good to see them toppled……..again. Well done, Doncaster. And at last, London Scottish get their first win. Well done them.

With regards to my team, Ampthill, well I was getting excited after 50 minutes. 29-5 down at half time, they scored three tries in the first ten minutes of the second half to make it 29-24. Then it all stopped. I can’t wait to read the match report.

Bedford dominant today, some great tries scored. Have to say Nottingham are the poorest team I’ve seen this season. Offered nothing in attack, don’t think they made a line break all game and pretty much just played one up runners off the 9 all game.

Some very interesting results today. With the resources at their disposal relative to rest of the division, Ealing should not be losing any games let alone 2 before Xmas. I really think they need to get a better DoR if they want any chance of being competitive in the prem because it certainly isn’t due to lack of playing talent. Did Bobby De Wee get sin binned?

I’m sorry (but not) to say that the score line reflected the weather, which made scoring difficult. However, the game was dominated in large parts by Jersey.
The Pirates defense was very good in the 1st half and Jersey gave too many pens away (not all justified if I’m honest) which allowed Pirates to clear their lines, only for Jersey to come back at them.
Neither sets of backs got any ball of note, with the exception being for CP’s try, which was a very fine score in the corner.
Other than that, all Red I’m afraid.
I did think that the Pirates 10 had an awesome game. Some brilliant clearances in impossible conditions.
Makes the table look interesting though.

A really tight game between two well matched teams down South in St Peter. IMO Jersey just had the edge throughout and played the windy conditions and slope better as they should as the home team. Jersey's line out in difficult conditions was better than good and defense was awesome. Pirates play right on the limit and their midfield and maul defence was exceptional. The yellow cards probably cost them the match but if you push that hard they will come. I think they "lost" the referee's patience by disputing decisions - I think they were marched back 10 three or four times and that's just too many. I still think they are most likely to push Trailfinders all the way and that should be good for rugby. Safe trip back lads - your club are the one I always measure Jersey's progress against and look up to.

Doncaster were magnificent. Especially in second half into the wind, defending a 10-0 half time lead which nobody thought would be enough. The defence was awesome, disciplined and conceded no penalties for 38 minutes. Ealing were clearly shocked as the Donny scrum were always in control.
Best game at Castle Park for a long time.

Good assessments above on the Reds/Pirates game from Brizzer & CC. Alan Paver was gracious in defeat & said he felt the home side seized the key moments for a deserved win. In the top 3-4 worst weather conditions for the 150-200 Reds' home league games I've seen... Donny supporters may remember the New Year's game here in 2016 - similar to that apart from wind direction

Sounds like Pirates struggled to gain possession for much of the game, which has been the story of many of our games this season.
As the Jersey supporters above mention, Pirates always seem to play right on the edge of what's legal, which is why our penalty count is always so high every game, which doesn't help the possession side of things.
I like to think when we get the penalties sorted we'll be a real force.

My own worst conditions in recent years:

Home -  https://www.jerseyreds.je/match_report/rotherham-h-26-1-13/" rel="nofollow - Rotherham (H) 26.1.13 - Jersey Reds
Away - Ayr away in the B&I cup - a snorkel & flippers day

My own worst conditions in recent years:

Home -  https://www.jerseyreds.je/match_report/rotherham-h-26-1-13/" rel="nofollow - Rotherham (H) 26.1.13 - Jersey Reds
Away - Ayr away in the B&I cup - a snorkel & flippers day

although of course I played in far worse

I was at the Rotherham game, but not Ayr [ https://www.jerseyreds.je/match_report/connacht-eagles-10-jersey-40/" rel="nofollow - LINK ] altho' I recall Finn Russell played in the latter match...

My original post referred to weather conditions, rather than the state of the pitch. The Rotherham game featured a terrible pitch, but as I recall the weather on the day was ok. For Reds' away games I'd mention the following:
  • https://www.jerseyreds.je/match_report/cornish-pirates-5-jersey-reds-7/" rel="nofollow - Pirates on St Piran's Day 2017 (also the lowest-scoring game I can recall)
  • https://www.jerseyreds.je/match_report/cornish-pirates-19-jersey-15/" rel="nofollow - Pirates again two years earlier - LINK
  • 1= coldest (but pitch fine as it was/is plastic) - https://www.jerseyreds.je/match_report/newcastle-falcons-38-jersey-reds-7/" rel="nofollow - Falcons Dec 2019

Ah Rothman2, it’s good to see you frequenting this forum again. I see that Roth are going great guns in N2N which is good to see. I still hold out hope that we’ll see the Derby back one day. I miss the Roth and Leeds fixtures, they were always a bit special. Anyway back to the suitability for the Prem, well when Donny applied for the audit in 2016 we used the Keepmoat as our ground in the event that we were promoted. I assume that arrangement could be resurrected again. I still think it’s scandalous we couldn’t play Premiership Rugby at Castle Park as it is now. I’m biased but it’s the best ground in this league by far. It’s better in terms of supporter experience than a lot of Premiership grounds. We should be able to play in the Prem at Castle Park without having to improve it. It’s good enough already.

Only a BP win between the top 4, this season is looking competitively tight this season, with Bedford not too far behind in 5th.

Having been there once for a N1 game, I would agree it is a great ground with Potential to be developed into a Premiership facility - presumably the Keepmoat option would be temporary while Castle Park is developed?

Correct the keepmoat option was always temporary, while the ground was fitted with the temporary erected stands.

That's right - and a bargain at £7. If you wait until later, when the game is over, it's only £2 I think.
It's another thing the RFU tried to scupper. The first game was streamed, then they decided to impose some kind of minimum criteria regarding cameras etc. Presumably they backed down as it was reinstated fairly soon and I think only one game was missed as a result. Coverage is very good, although be prepared for a somewhat one-eyed commentary because the commentators are usually players who are injured! That said they do a bleddy good job IMO.

Brilliant and a bargain. Begs the question why don't other clubs do it? There are three cameras recording every match at St Peter and the big screen in the NW corner where I stand streams the game live as I assume TVs do upstairs in the clubhouse for the proper people so they can enjoy the game and still spend money in the bar. Clubs regularly claim they have no money but I would gladly pay to watch streamed games. The radio Jersey/Cornwall coverage on Saturday was probably well supported but punters would surely pay for a live-stream service.

Live streaming is easy these days you can even do it with a mobile connection.
The main difficulty is combining the Camera feed & commentary and then uploading the data to a host like FB who enable you to monetize it.

If you want action replays you need the software, a competent operator and comms between commentary and operator.

All doable if you have the skills available - and if so, a lot more

£7 for a live stream is a pretty good deal I reckon. I might stream the game next Sunday when Donny go there and see what it’s about. I’ve heard a lot of people on RM have done it in the past so I might give it a go. I’m surprised more clubs don’t do it when they probably have the capability to stream live. I guess they want to protect their matchday gates.

I don't have the skills, but I know very many West of the Tamar that do have the skills, and who were streaming Pirates Games with a 3 camera set up quite some years ago.

An Example of this is a Highlights Package from Pirates TV from 24/11/2013 - Cornish Pirates 21-15 Bristol

Part of me is desperate to write this off as a weather-related aberration, but I'm concerned about the ability of Ealing to create opportunities when they can't just overpower the opposition. Shingler is technically excellent, and rarely makes errors, but he also doesn't create something from nothing. Overall, the team that ran out on Saturday for Ealing was very similar to the one that beat Donny in Ealing in the final game of the season 6 months ago.

What I found is that Ealing tried to persist with kicking the high ball, even when it came back at them, so they gained no advantage in the first half, in the second half the Knights used grubber and torTomato kicks where necessary. Ealing tried to force play and as such made a lot of handling errors, the knights retained possession and were at times driven back until such time as they could find gaps that they then made the most of. The defence by the knights was solid, to keep the scoreboard to nil for 70 minutes says a lot about that - without analysing the try you got in slow motion I suspect that the guy at the front of the breakaway maul detached from the maul and it could have been construed as truck and trailer (offside) if anyone was there to stop it :-) - it was a lovely little breakthrough to be honest.

The Knights Team that ran out this time was quite different to the one 6 months ago though, as the vast majority of our older seasoned players have gone. These guys are just young, hungry and eager to play - I guess that was what made the difference. I am sure we will face a different challenge when we come to yours in a few months time.....

CastleParkKnight I think you are 99% correct on your take on the game . I’m a Ealing supporter who made the journey up on Saturday 🙁, I don’t get all this kick, kick, kick especially in the conditions we had on Saturday. Doncaster certainly fully deserved the win , unfortunately for Ealing you wanted it a lot more than we did . All that said I’ll still think we will beat you at vallis & end up top at the end 🤞😎

You could well be right on that - we cannot seem to find a bonus point for love nor money - no bonus points no win this league for sure. However I hope to be at Vallis way to witness us taking the double 😜

I also think Ealing will end up top and with the massive investment that has been made in their squad it should be by at least 10 clear points. Its absolutely right that other clubs make them earn it and Pirates & Donny showed how its done. Jersey fell just short of that standard a few weeks ago but will absolutely be trying harder in the return leg and every club target their games against them. Ealing have some great supporters and their owner has delivered the investment so its up to the players and coaches to deliver the result. They will probably never get a better chance.
