Alright, 21-22 in the bag. What do we know about 22-23 pre-season friendlies? According to the Telegraph, Ealing have lined up Zebre and Biarritz so far.

No clue, just going off of the information in the long Telegraph article on Ealing yesterday.

Ealing have now confirmed:
Biarritz away Thursday 18th August
Rosslyn Park away Saturday 20th August (guess that won't be first team?)
Richmond away Friday 26th August
Zebre Home - Saturday 3rd September

Really disappointed not to see a Premiership team on the list as I've enjoyed the visits from Saracens, Falcons and Gloucester the last few years.

Jersey will have 3 x home games: TBC on 3rd w/e Aug, London Irish on Sat 27/8 & Bath on Fri 2/9

Jersey Reds will test themselves against Gallagher Premiership opponents as they build up to the 2022/23 league campaign with home fixtures against London Irish and Bath Rugby.

London Irish will visit the Island during the last full week of August, culminating with a game against the Reds on the afternoon of Saturday August 27th. It will be the first meeting between the clubs since they locked horns during the 2018/19 Championship season, which included  https://www.jerseyreds.je/match_report/jersey-reds-17-london-irish-14/" rel="nofollow - a memorable 17-14 home win  for the Reds against their table-topping visitors.

The Reds last played Bath in a pre-season game at Stade Santander International in August 2014,  https://www.jerseyreds.je/match_report/jersey-10-bath-34/" rel="nofollow - with the visitors winning 10-34 . A number of players have moved between the clubs since then, the most recent example being back row man Wes White earning an opportunity at the top level and leaving Jersey at the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign.

Jersey Reds against Bath will be played on the evening of Friday September 2nd.

Director of Rugby Harvey Biljon said: “We’re really looking forward to the new season and want to really test our new squad ahead of the Championship kick-off – that’s certainly what they’ll get against both London Irish and Bath.”

The Reds are set to have a further pre-season match, to be played on the third weekend of August, with details due to be announced shortly. The first round of the 2022/23 RFU Championship is scheduled to take place on the second weekend of September.

I am still living the dream that Ampthill are about to enjoy a third season in the Championship.

This is a very serious league. I note that Jersey have lined up three preseason games against London Irish, Bath, and some team called Leicester Tigers. All in preparation for Jersey’s first proper match away to the mighty Ampthill.

Ampthill of course have lined up three similar games against The Wallabies, South Africa, and The All Blacks……..not.

LOL

That is some serious pre-season by Jersey - they will either come in to the start of season hot and be raring to go, or feeling a little bit battered and bruised which means opportunity knocks for Ampthill. We are still awaiting official confirmation of our games but two Prem Teams allegedly lined up - I would hope we have a run out game against a Nat 1 Team or a Welsh Prem Team but who knows.....

Spot on CPK Jersey have had pre-season friendly injuries to key players in the last couple of seasons. It's great for the local fans (and Jersey tourism) to have premiership opposition pre-season but on a personal basis I would have been just as happy to see old friends from Mose or Plymouth together with an away day in Brittany against a French club.

I recall a few years back Ealing played Harlequins. It was extremely exciting to go to the Stoop, but then-Captain Sam Dickinson picked up an injury that kept him out for half the season. However, it is hard to argue for the professionalism of the Champ and then shy away from friendlies with the big boys.

Hear what your saying, however a good few years ago Donny played Glasgow and Newcastle pre season and lost about 6 key players for the best part of that season, which was devastating with the squad size we had.

Is there any evidence/guarantee that an Ealing player would be more likely to suffer an injury against Harlequins than, say, Rosslyn Park?!

I don’t think many will turn up.

Sadly I heard we had 3 lined up originally, but as Saints progressed into the playoffs they wanted to move the game which then messed up the plans, so they had to try and find replacements.

We are missing a more “equal” team

I walked down to Blackheath v Richmond last night. It looked like both teams started with their strongest fifteens which was the closest contested of the three thirty minute sessions. Blackheath seemed to be a handful at the breakdown whilst Richmond's offloading game caused a good number of line breaks and they were more clinical in their finishing. Blackheath appeared to  use a few youngsters whilst the Richmond squad seemed to have a good amount of depth. One of the Blackheath supporters told me he understood they are running a regular 2nd XV this coming season. The game was probably a bit closer than the score reflected. A thoroughly enjoyable evening of rugby.

Very entertaining match in the heat of the BPA.
Merthyr ran up a 0-17 lead die to the weight and experience of their pack. By half time though their were tiring badly in the heat and Coventry pulled back to 12-17.

In the second half, both teams having made 15 player changes Cov brought on a more experienced pack, and the game was much more even, and much more mobile.

A useful outing for both squads.

They looked young and fast. This was good in the backline, less so in the pack.

On a hot very dry pitch!!! I bet the backs looked very good. I would hate to be in the front row. Not nice at all.

The best of luck to Coventry and Doncaster in the season ahead.

First post ahead of the new season and first proper post in the Championship forum.

Caldy take on Sale Sharks tonight at Paton Field and they are probably hoping that a wooden hut and an open (...ish) field will so discombobulate the visitors that it will give the Ravers a slight advantage.

Cady Chairman Gary Devaney and Director of Rugby Gareth Davies have themselves undertaken a period of intense preparation ahead of tonight’s game against Sale Sharks.

Caldy’s two senior men have just returned from participating in the Caldy RFC Shark Fishing tournament off Falmouth. This prestigious catch and release tournament organised by Caldy supporter Derek Salisbury using specialist big game boats and skippers is fast becoming a fixture in the UK Big Game Fishing calendar.

Gareth’s team eventually won through after a hook up late on the second day with the tournament’s biggest Blue Shark caught by Jake Lyon on big game boat 'Anglo Dawn'. Anglo Dawn skipper Andy Howell was impressed by a couple of firsts racked up by Caldy 2nd row 6ft 7 inch giant Richard Bradshaw......who landed the first 'bonito' skipper Andy Howell has ever seen in UK waters. Richard was also the first big game fisherman ever to bring his own spew bucket and disinfectant spray onto Anglo Dawn.

Richard Bradshaw is a man who needs to be prepared "just like the Ravers who need to be thoroughly prepared for what they are facing tonight, it was important for me to be ready for big seas 25 miles offshore......the bucket was a very essential bit of kit, I had a little difficulty keeping my Pot Noodle under control"

Braddie was keen to point out the good omens thrown up by the result of the Caldy Shark Fishing tournament "The younger team led by Gaz Davies outperformed the established pre tournament favourites of Gary Devaney, Derek Salisbury, Barrie Pilgrim and Paul Harrison. Once we heard from the skipper of the 'Seawatch' that Barrie's sea legs and ankles had gone and he had told skipper Nigel "......We need a bigger boat"............we knew that we just had to ignore the rough seas and power through to get the win."

"Bring it on ........the more Sharks the better" " said Richard 'Quint' Bradshaw

5-28 at HT. 3 Tigers rolling mauls and a forward move try. TBH Jersey have done alright. The defense looks pretty good, although they did tire at the end of the half for the 4th try.
Jersey playing with the breeze 2 nd half and 30 changes could make it an interesting 2nd 40

I see Caldy v Sale finished 5-40; great to see BE landing properly on the Champ forum & hopefully a good crowd & derby atmosphere at PF…

Brilliant to make a start to the new season and after my migration south I can report that the walk from the ground to my new abode took 23 minutes! Plaudits due to Sean for keeping the bar going after the late surge of interest in tickets and Milo for his efforts in producing a pitch that looked picture perfect and for tirelessly filing in in the overworked bar at the west end. The Tiggers fans are exceptional and always welcome.

Great to be back at Caldy after a few years.
Beautiful sunny evening and big crowd. I'm guessing about 1500? Big Eddie where were you hiding?

There's many a side would like the Tigers to visit every week, very good travelling supporters(me included on occasion), trouble is with them just 4 miles down the road, Leicester Lions are always going to struggle to get a large crowd.

Ealing looked powerful, but Park had the best looking tries with a number of ducking, dodging breakaways.

2,600 tickets sold online about 400 walk ins so around 3,000. I was on the gate and then worked on one of the outside bars. Caldy were like rabbits in the headlights for the first 15 minutes or so and were quickly 20+ points down. They rallied and had a really good showing in the 2nd half. Caldy had three of their biggest forwards unavailable so will take a lot of positives from the hit out

Ampthill’s preseason game away to Cardiff this Saturday has been cancelled as Cardiff cannot raise a team. Let’s hope Saracens can muster up a full squad the following week for Ampthill’s final warm up game.

That’s such a shame and a nightmare for Ampthill’s preparation. Pre season is so important. I’m sure that the squad will have a meaningful game amongst themselves, but it isn’t the same thing as playing proper opposition

Agree totally - I think this is what cost the Knights winning the league last season. We treated our early league games as pre-season and the points lost there cost us dearly.

We hopefully play WASPS this Friday and Newcastle the following Friday. We have had a "training" day with Sale last week with a couple of live full contact training sessions in between the breakouts, so I am more hopeful of entering the season less green. We just have to get past Ealing on day 1 of the season, away.....wishful thinking I know Smile

It's a great shame that Wharfedale and Ampthill couldn't hook up to play one another this Saturday. Both sides have now had their original opposition cancel. And if it had then been played at Wharfedale I would have been able to attend. Just daydreaming.

Richmond 12 (2T) - Ealing 21 (3T) HT. Ealing have played freeflowing to the point of looseness  Richmond has scored with a couple 14 man pushovers. Entertaining match for the 1000 or so in attendance on a balmy Friday evening.

Richmond 26 (4T) - Ealing 35 (5T) - Richmond very spirited, Ealing flashy, but ill disciplined. FT
