I have no great love for this competition. It is merely an excuse to fill in fixtures for a too small league. I doubt if all coaches will field their strongest sides and there is only a watered down incentive for players to win as giant killing results rarely occur in rugby.
But I will gladly offer my predictions if they count towards the overall season standings.

I guess when your sports national team are playing, you want to avoid playing the same time.

Of an age where I remember Bedford entertaining Scottish clubs ahead of Calcutta Cup games at Twickenham.
Or that Autumn would see three tests and English Divisions play a touring team…now tourists rack up the air miles across Europe. Although the size of Australia distances in Europe I guess are not that bad.

Would I prefer more league matches. Yes.
Unlike the EFL Championship, I don’t think we have a proliferation of current international players in the Championship.

However the wk 2 fixture Bedford v Coventry on Armistice Day Evening has me next week begging 🙏 the boss for a half day holiday.

Still no love for the competition though.

I’m going to keep a separate predictions table for the cup games and then maybe add the totals to the league scores later in the season. I’ll see how many people get their guesses in, if we get enough interest, they’ll count towards the overall league.

Anyway, here’s my guess on what might happen this week, with all the usual caveats about team selections etc.

Pool A:
Nottingham 5 v 2 Jersey
Ealing 5 v 0 Hartpury

Pool B:
London Scottish 5 v 2 Bedford
Doncaster 5 v 0 Coventry

Pool C:
Caldy 5 v 1 Ampthill
Richmond 5 v 1 Cornish Pirates

In Pool A , I think Nottingham will just edge out a Jersey team that I think could rotate their squad this week. Ealing will be too good for Hartpury whoever they pick.

Pool B - I think LS could use the cup games to kick start their season and I think they’ll start with a win against an inconsistent, and probably not full-strength, Bedford. I also expect Donny to continue their impressive home form and beat Cov.

Pool C - Caldy will go for it in every game this season and they probably don’t have the luxury of making mass changes so I’m tipping a win for the Ravers. Amps will still be tough to beat though. I know Richmond normally give the cup lip-service but with the group they have, I expect them to really go for it in this first game and I think they can beat a transitional Pirates team.

The only way to do this is to pretend they are league games as there are just too many unknowns as to what strength of side each team fields. I start off by saying Ealing will win the cup and Ampthill won't.

Nottingham 1-4 Jersey
Ealing 5-0 Hartpury
L Scottish 2-5 Bedford
Doncaster 4-0 Coventry
Caldy 3-3 Ampthill
Richmond 1-4 Pirates

Nottingham 0-5 Jersey ... The Jersey 'fringe' are no weaker than the starting 15 and are all playing for places. I think that the Reds take this.
Ealing 5-0 Hartpury ... So many strong players in the Ealing squad. Cannot see past a comfortable home win here.
L Scottish 4 1 Bedford ... I can see an upset here if Bedford rotate and LS don't. They have been improving.
Doncaster 5-0 Coventry ... It's Donny at home innit?
Caldy 4-1 Ampthill ... Caldy to take revenge from a few weeks ago.
Richmond 4-1 Pirates ... Both teams to rotate. Close home win.

Shocking rain squalls during the game but Caldy had too much power up front for Ampthill. Huge penalty count against Ampthill and their scrum was comprehensively dismantled. Some stand out performances for Caldy including both scrum halves Nye Thomas and Joe Murray who managed the conditions better than the Mob.

Nye Thomas was a constant threat behind a dominant pack. Up front Rushton, Sanders, Crowe and Higginson were stand outs for Caldy and although only on the pitch for 10 minutes an act of phenomenal skill and strength by Aigbokhae could have snatched the man of the match award away from the diminutive Nye Thomas who in my view deserved the award. (I do not know whether Nye actually was awarded MoM)

As the Mob's driving maul pushed towards the Caldy line the Ampthill second row broke to dive over the line with most of Ampthill driving behind him. Aigbokhae twisted the big fella onto his back and despite the weight of Ampthill bearing down on him there was no way for Ampthill to ground the ball.

Adam Aigbokhae is a freak of nature.

Ealing 24 (4t) - Gloucester b 0 - HT Not as close as the score suggests. Gloucester B have made maybe 10 meters with ball in hand. Jack Grant ended the half with a 90 meter solo wonder try, leaving half the opposition jock straps on the pitch.

Your son is Right, what is the point of this cup, unless Ealing send out their 3B side then there is no point in turning up to take a hammering, clubs are already resting players ready for the next round of serious fixtures in the league. The decision not to go to a 14-team league was a mistake. 12 plus the cup is the same number of games and they would be more competitive and attract bigger crowds, the excuse that it would mean spreading the RFU money thinner no longer applies as clubs are only getting £140 less insurance now.

Oh my. Did Blues put out an experimental team?

I think the lack of any comment from Bedford fans , win or lose shows exactly how little support there is for this cup competition in its current format. There would usually be in depth analysis by knowledgeable Blues supporters but absolutely no response is surprising . No try of the day, no disputing referees decisions and mention of the Blues opposition tries from rolling mauls.
I am not overly keen on this cup competition but I did attend . It is a rugby match and there were some new combinations and debuts.
There seemed to be a uplift in defence and a collective resolve and determination to hold the line. The Forthcoming game against Jersey will be incredibly interesting from both teams. How much will be given away or retained for the league games. Will Jersey dominate the set piece ?. I am looking forward to that game but dependant on long haul flights to make the game at Ealing Trailfinders.

Some clubs appear to adopt this approach, but Ealing certainly don't - they want to win it and their squad is so strong they can rotate the squad and still do the business. Jersey travel to Vallis Way in round 3 and I'm looking forward to seeing that match far more than a league game against one of the clubs in the bottom half of the table. Ealing will be strongly fancied to win but I'd be surprised and disappointed if they didn't have to work for it.

This could have been a lot more interesting if we had a competition involving Champ teams and Nat 1 teams. Something different for supporters of all those clubs and a chance to visit different places and meet new rugby people. The only benefit of the current cup competition is that some "fringe" players get a chance to show what they can do and impress the coaches.

Pictorial evidence suggests Blues fans visited RAG for our second trip in a week.

It was also biggest night of the year at Goldington Road as we hosted the annual fireworks.

Interesting hearing spectators saying they didn’t know what the ground was like, or it’s drinking facilities. Some hinting they might come down for a game.

Blues biggest weakness, imo, is not having a second team. A Wanderers team, with active promotion might bring some new faces to our club. Although I might have the conflict of Wanderers or Bedford Ath.
