Rugby Inside Line reporting that next year will see a combined Prem/Championship cup with 4 pools of 6. Not sure how accurate that will be, but fingers crossed.

Northampton 3xv v Bedford/Northampton 2xv?

😂

The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.

Quite. Certain Championship clubs would be er, disadvantaged by this potentially. Some fixtures could end up looking like probables v possibles for both clubs - except that for the level 2 clubs some of their usual probables might be in the opposition shirt...*

*not knocking it - it's the same at National 1, but I'm not sure the consequences of this proposal have been completely thought through...

In the ideal World we would have retained a knockout cup, like Rugby League Challenge Cup (yes RL which some see as the lesser variant of rugby).

Knockout cups did attract the biggest crowds, but you get knocked out, so most clubs saw one big crowd.

It is fortunate that Worcester have not taken up their place, leaving 24 teams across the top two divisions. It would have been more awkward with 25. Five pools of five anyone.

Had that been combined with no relegation, 26 is a really difficult number, its only factors are 13 and 2.

The 2nd VX things is an issue, and perhaps it is time to look at both the number of loan players in the Championship and the academies, especially as two are already being run by the RFU, Yorkshire and Midlands.

But, it could be worse, Sale FC could get promoted. A FC v Sharks fixture could be quite tasty.

Add 10 pool fixtures to 26 league fixtures (14 team league) equals chaos totally against the protection of players. unless clubs have BIG squads.

So five cup matches until mid October.

So guessing Championship starting circa 21st October or late as first weekend of November.

So with two byes should see season end last weekend of April.

Pool stages of the new comp concludes by 8 Oct, so would expect Champ fixtures to start w/e 13-15 Oct - can’t see why it would be delayed beyond then…

I have to say - well done to Rugby Inside Line for knowing this months in advance.
