Great work for setting this back up "rugbynerd65":

I am not associated to a club, I just enjoy watching this level of rugby and live in the south east and travel to different games each week - going to go to Letchworth vs Colchester this week.

Letchworth vs Colchester: (Letchworth 0 - 5 Colchester)

Letchworth are very much looking like the Chelsea of Regional 1 SE from early showing, spending a lot of money for little returns. Their only win coming to what looks like a struggling Westcliff outfit. Colchester continuing their form from last year and look strong again. I can only see this going one way.

Old Northamptonians vs Harpenden (Old Northamptonians 1-4)

Tough one to call this, just going with Harpenden as they have probably had the slightly better results, however whispers of them losing some of there better players, could this explain the drumming from Sudbury? Time will tell. Old Northamptonians are very much an unknown quantity. Would be interested to hear from anyone who has seen them play. This secrecy around them could mean that they surprise a few teams.

Shelford vs Tring (Shelford 1-4 Tring)

Tring had a wobble first week vs Oundle, but have recovered well beating Rochford away and then local rivals Hertford at home convincingly (Apparently early red for Tring aswell?). However looking at squad lists they may have lost some players as they have a traditional 2XV back 3 (could also be injuries?). Shelford are always a solid team whenever I watch them and they took Colchester close week 2, so this promises to be probably pick of the games. I am going Tring, as they are always a tough outfit with an exceptional kicker that rarely misses and I predict this to be close.

Rochford vs Hertford (Rochford 5-0 Hertford)

Rochford me in this match up, I watched Hertford week 1 vs Colchester and they are a shell of the side they used to be, seems like they have potentially run out of money? Lots of youngsters so could grow as the season goes on but need to get a lot more battle hardened. However if the rumours of 14 men for Tring last week are true, that loss to Tring would have hurt even more than normal so a reaction could be on the cards. Rochford have had some good results and them being at home means I can't look anywhere over than a BP win.

Sudbury vs Oundle (Sudbury 4 - 1 Oundle)

Another tough call, but Sudbury to edge it for me, seem to have taken a beating from Colchester last week, so will be looking to bounce back, however they had a very good result against Harpenden early on. Could they be the France of old of Regional 1 SE? Oundle's results have dropped off after a great result week 1, I have heard their 12 is a class operator and can be the difference. Has he been playing? However head is saying Sudbury.

Westcliff vs Bedford Athletic (Westcliff 0-5 Bedford Athletic)

Westcliff seem to be really struggling so far, with a loss in the local derby to Rochford they will be hurting even more. They need to start finding some points from somewhere as the rest of the pack could get to far ahead early on. Bedford Ath have been unlucky to just lose in a couple of games but a great result against Letchworth. I think Bedford Ath will have fire in their bellies to climb the table and will get the BP win.

I think my tip regarding Old Northamptonians is to call them ONs at every opportunity and save yourself typing time.

I've watched ON's a lot over the past couple of seasons. In the league below their back division ripped teams to shreds but their pack struggled against bigger sides. This season they have beefed up their pack significantly and have lost none of the pace and youthful exuberence of their back division.

Joe Heslop, their captain and talisman has missed the start of the season, still recovering from the ankle injury sustained when they beat Horsham in the final of the Papa Johns.

They were disappointed to lose at home to Rochford, beat Westcliffe convincingly and won at Bedford Athletic with the last play of the game.

Having only lost one or two games last seaosn, they are a confident team !

Thanks for setting up RugbyNerd65

Hertford fan here, sad to say Tring did indeed get an early red. However credit to them, played a great game of rugby and have really developed from last year. They've always had a great pack that do set piece well, but their attack seems to have come on with a really strong 8-9-10-12-15 axis if they can keep them fit they will do well. Extra special mention to their 12 he is special!

As for Hertford, yes we have a younger team and have cleared out a lot of our old guard and are trying to create a lot more of our own home grown talent, Some very talented rugby players in the squad and I think as the season grows we will come into our own, some injuries haven't helped either. Look forward to welcoming the Tring faithful to Hoe Lane in December.

Predictions:
Letchworth vs Colchester  0-5

Old Northamptonians vs Harpenden 5-0

Shelford vs Tring 1-5

Rochford vs Hertford 0-5

Sudbury vs Oundle 4-1

Westcliff vs Bedford Athletic 0-5

All very true, this looks to be a really competitive league with some great clubs, with Colchester an obvious early season favourite for the title. ONs are a young mostly home grown side so very tightly knit and don't want to know or accept when they are beaten - Saturday vs a well drilled, big Harpenden outfit a great example; 13-22 probably the right result but with another 5 minutes ONs could have nicked it (before sir called it after 42 minutes!). They will get better as season progresses especially when the players out return (but bet all sides can say the same).

Late to the party but to answer your question if Hertford have potentially run out of money, the answer is No.
Some course changes over the last couple of years resulted in some reflection on where we want to be, why, and what do want when we get there.
Time will tell if we we made the right choices but generally the reaction from members and players alike is overwhelmingly positive with 9 or 10 young 'homegrowns' in the 1s each week.
Pre match lunches are pretty much sold out for 160 every home game with two requiring additional marquees in the car park making it well over 200 diners (and drinkers)
We are spending the same on the squad overall but supporting the wider squad with lesser focus on just the 18 shirts on a Saturday.
Can all clubs do it this way? No. Will we always be able to do it this way? Probably not. Does it mean we are not open to players from elsewhere? Of course not.
We belive we have young talent at the moment who can play at this level and that  they will grow together. and attendences show the wider club, despite results not as good as previous years, support the strategy.
As we all know, and has been painfully demonstrated again this week, a sustainable business model is vital for any club to thrive at any level.
So, in short, no major money worries, ambition in a sustainable way and you're all welcome to 'The Lane' to boost the bar receipts.
I hope this answers the question.

Sorry I have been quiet, had a busy few weeks.

Harpenden V Rochford Hundred

Hertford V Letchworth Garden City

Shelford V Sudbury

Tring v ON's

Oundle V Westcliff

Colchester V Bedford Athletic

Some shock results of late, would be good to get peoples take on the teams they have watched.

I watched Letchworth V Tring this weekend.Great game of rugby, Tring should have stole it at the end just a mindless offload after a great break. Tring had a fair few changes to their usual pack.

I think Tring didn't look like the Tring I have seen in the past, they were not their usual hard nosed clinical selves. Letchworth looked ever improving and are beginning to click. Few standouts from the game were Letchworth's 7 & 13, and Tring's 6 & 9.

This league is ridiculously even going into Xmas. Really is a case of anyone can beat anyone.  This goes all the way to last day I reckon.

Happy Christmas all.

If you like your stats:

12 points between 1st & 2nd
12 points between 2nd & 9th
12 points between 9th & 12th

No other L5 league is anything like as close.

Half the clubs have games in hand vs others (or one less rest week to look at it another way!)

As you say 'Carlos' anybody can beat anybody so the table can change week to week, with 9/10 games to go those bonus points are going to be even more valuable, as well as depth of squads

So that's that then. Predictions of a tight end to the season were way wide of the mark like most of my efforts.

Congratulations Colchester,  commiserations Westcliff and Rochford.

Now everyone else is safe, do we start to see old hands being rested and youngsters given a go?
