This weeks match ups are:

Ampthill v Caldy
Cambridge v Coventry
Hartpury v London Scottish
Bedford Blues v Nottingham
Ealing Trailfinders v Cornish Pirates

Doncaster Knights playing Edinburgh A

Some interesting games this week.  If the weather is dry the game of the week will be the battle of the backs!  Blues at home should win this but it could be 55 - 49!

Blues have a weird situation where we have only played 1 away game in the league so far at Pirates.  Next week is Ampthill, so almost another home game.

Is that home or away?
Edinburgh fans won't be used to away games they can get to apart from the obvious.

Home. Seems like tickets are going well though. Sure I saw that there were only 150 seats left available in the stand.

Not surprised. Scottish rugby fans in England don't often get a chance to see their lads play.

Ampthill 5-2 Caldy. Always a close encounter.
Cambridge 1-5 Coventry. But this depends on which Coventry team turn up.
Hartpury 3-3 L Scottish. Totally impossible to predict until the Scottish team is announced.
Bedford 5-2 Nottingham. Possibly the most entertaining game of this round.
Ealing 5-2 Pirates. Ealing to win but their defence leaks tries so it will be close.

Ealing Trailfinders lineup to face Cornish Pirates:

Ealing ring in the changes after their poor performance at the RAG. Cornish is the best lineout thrower of our hookers, so I like that change. Rayn Smid is crucial for marshalling the troops, so also glad to see him in the side. The change that concerns me is Dan Lancaster at 10. He has real spark and talent...but his kicking leaves much to be desired.

Blues (5 tries) 35-12 (2 tries) Nottingham

Blues have the slope and wind advantage for the 2nd half.

Probably the best up the slope performance for a long time. The score could be slightly larger to Blues. The ball has been in play probably longer than some other matches and Nottingham have come to play as well.

Blues making plenty of line breaks and Nottingham looked tired at the end of the half.

Blues (5) 49-24 (1) Nottingham

Nottinghams had more of the ball 2nd half and deserved the point.

Blues weren’t great 2nd half but the damage was done in the first and also Nottingham played their part.

Hartpury deservedly win it with final kick conversion. Scottish Nil points second half. Key point in game for me - midway through second half, Pury still adrift Scottish get kickable penalty went for quick tap & go then lost the ball. Great comeback Pury.  Clap

From Ealing Twitter:

Ealing Trailfinders can confirm that today’s fixture against Cornish Pirates has been abandoned.

This is due to an injury to Cornish Pirates’ Ben Grubb, our thoughts are with him, his family and Cornish Pirates at this time. We hope he makes a speedy recovery.

The rearranged fixture will be announced in due course.

It was a head contact in the tackle. Couldn’t see which part of tackler made contact with the head.Ball carrier was much taller than the tackler but was falling into the tackle. Ref immediately blew for a penalty but I don’t recall seeing a card - everyone’s attention was elsewhere.

This was posted on the Northampton Saints forum, no idea where they got the info from, but sounds good news

Pirates “ Positive news, as Ben Grubb has been discharged from hospital following tests and scans coming back clear. Ben is on his way back to Cornwall and will continue his rehab at the club next week. Ben would also like to pass on his thanks for all the well wishes.”

The information on the saints forum came from a statement on the Pirates website. The same statement also said that the Ealing player would’ve been red carded if the game had been restarted. It also mentions that when a game is abandoned due to non weather conditions, the decision will be made by the RFU as to outcome/rearrangement. Suspect it will be rearranged, but given pirates were only 12 points down away at Ealing and would’ve had an extra player for the final 20, suspect the rearrangement works to Ealing’s favour more than Pirates. I gather the abandonment was due to the lack of ambulance after the Pirates player was taking to hospital. I’m not sure what the requirements are for this, I would’ve thought clubs should be expected to be more prepared for this eventuality.

Going on to the Bedford game, I’m not sure there’s any clubs other than Ealing that will be able to live with us this season in dry weather conditions. This is the slickest Bedford team I’ve seen since the season we had Karl Dickson and Billy Twelvetrees pulling the strings from half back. Our pack is also much improved that we shouldn’t be a pushover anymore in wet conditions. Hope the weather is as dry for the Caldy rearrangement for the game that never was. Forecast for Ampthill away next week is not great so that could be a true test for this team’s potential. We have also been pretty lucky with injuries so far this season and I do think if a few key players got injured, we wouldn’t be able to maintain this level.

I agree there is no weak link in the Blues squad this season. The young Saints have to be very good players to make the 23 weekend squad. Other seasons we’ve had some squad fillers. Also Le Bourgeois has found his attacking skills again after a quieter season last year.

I did think the Nottingham 15 looks good and we kept the other Nottingham speedsters quiet.

I saw a stat that Blues averaged 38.9 points a game!

The real test will be the away games in the muddy conditions but 100% away record (1 win at Pirates) isn’t a bad start.

Agreed, this is the best Blues squad I have seen for many seasons.  However there are some tough matches coming up.  Doncaster away is always a very tough nut to crack and Cov home and away.  Cov not woken up fully yet and they were (in my opinion) the best team to visit GR last season.  I had them down to take the championship this season, long way to go.

Replaying the match must be financially crippling for the Pirates.
If foul play ended the match prematurely by a home player rendering an opponent unconscious ,even accidentally I hasten to add allegedly through foul play, shouldn't there be scope for compensation of travel arrangements etc ?

Difficult to see how a club could prepare for this situation. Should they have two ambulances on standby in case the first is required? Hardly practical is it?

Back in the day Knights were playing at Old Deer Park and we had at least two players, stretchered of and taken away in Ambulances, not at the same time.

It looks like Saints have converted Garside into a winger, so not sure we’ll see him at scrum half this season and he’ll likely be our wing cover. Saints have a host of injuries in the back 3 atm, so he may well get some prem games. I’m slightly concerned they’re going to come after French…

And a 3rd, just in case the first 2 are used?

Hardly practical.

I am just surprised the number of ambulances that have to be taken out of action for sport. I saw that Pirates used to have a paramedics car but that's not good enough anymore.

I think as long as you have the necessary equipment, a doctor and paramedics all available within a few minutes that is a lot better than pretty much everyone else has in a workplace.

Nottingham 19 should be banned by a long time with this premeditated shoulder to the head captured by a fan.

Shame that it takes an incident like this for the Champ to merit any press coverage in a UK national...

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/dec/16/ealing-v-cornish-pirates-match-abandoned-after-player-knocked-unconscious" rel="nofollow - https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/dec/16/ealing-v-cornish-pirates-match-abandoned-after-player-knocked-unconscious

Not sure most DoRs or media managers would be super keen on an analyst talking to the press about something like this...

On a lighter, more positive note, Ampthill's decision to provide free tickets purchased in advance for last Saturday's game against Caldy resulted in a crowd of nearly 1,300, and all tickets for the up and coming fixture with Bedford this Saturday have now been sold. I would absolutely love to be there. I think the ground capacity is 3,000 but I think the are allowing in less than that for health and safety purposes.

There are insurance issues if a crowd is over 2000 and you need a crowd doctor.

One possible Health and safety issue is people rolling down the steep hill on the side furthest from the club/woodland walk.

But nonetheless, well done Ampthill in getting a few punters in.

Bit of a headline grabber statement that ‘premeditated’ - I wonder would you have posted it if it was a Blue doing the clear out? The guy does dip into it, just poorly executed, I don’t see premeditated malice in it though.

looking at video of the 19 hitting the other player  should be red  if you go on some of the decisions  at the recent world cup

"It looks like Saints have converted Garside into a winger, so not sure we’ll see him at scrum half this season and he’ll likely be our wing cover. Saints have a host of injuries in the back 3 atm, so he may well get some prem games."
Garside is a nifty scrum half, capable of creating real mayhem, but is way to small to feature as a winger.
Yes, I know, Shane Williams etc can cut the mustard at the highest level but I thought that young Garside looked lost when he played on the wing for Bedford a few weeks ago.

I thought you were taking about Goldington Rd when you mentioned " rolling down the hill the steep hill the side furthest from the club"

He knew exactly what he was doing, the Blues player didn’t move, it wasn’t like other reds card that can seem harsh and because of a size differential. He didn’t even need to try and clear out a player nowhere near the ball when the ruck was already lost. Also the referee seemed to be looking straight at it even more worryingly.

He did look a bit lost, but still managed to score.  Jake may be small but he is powerfully built and of course has that amazing burst of speed.  I think scrum half game is good, he can kick and passes the ball well.  I was expecting him to alternate with the classy Alex Day.  However Archie McParland is shaping up well and there is also ‘Jiffy’ Lennon as back up, so competition is high.

Difficult to see how a club could prepare for this situation. Should they have two ambulances on standby in case the first is required? Hardly practical is it?

Two ambulances is one of the many derided Minimum Standards for the Premiership, precisely because of situations like this.  A Cup semi final was delayed for 15 minutes at Leicester in 1992 because the medics &  ambulance was taking a fan to hospital following a heart attack & they had to wait for them to return.

I don't think adequate medical cover is particularly impractical for a sport where you are paying the players & accepting money from the spectators.

So according to your logic every club where players are paid and spectators pay money should have a minimum of two ambulances like the Premiership.

Sorry as I said before it's hardly practical is it?

Given that in most matches, the ambulance just sits there.

If you have a paramedic and a doctor and a team of physios trained in first aid - with a properly stocked medical room - then having the ambulance on call is probably sufficient - and that is what most amateur and semi pro players have.

And the only time we have needed the air ambulance to land, was to bring extra morphine for a Shelford 3rd XV player. His studs stuck in the ground as he chased down and tackled from behind, and his leg tried to move in a way legs don't.
