I've waited until teams were announced to create this topic. Basically, I'm very happy with the Ealing side that I'm seeing announced. I am assuming that they have done all relevant admin in regard to players being cup tied, as there are several players on here who I don't believe played in the pool stages, though the Jersey walkover may have allowed them special dispensation.

Here is the team - the only surprises for me are not having Shingler at 10 or on the bench, but it worked well against Pirates, and I'm sure we'll hear twenty times on Sunday's broadcast that Dan Lancaster is Stuart Lancaster's son.  Also surprised that there is no Tom Collins after his recent run of form, but he may have picked up a niggle. Happy to see Andrew Davidson in the squad - he is a massive presence to have coming off the bench.

1 Will Goodrick-Clarke

2 Matt Cornish

3 Biyi Alo

4 Bobby De Wee

5 Barney Maddison

6 Rob Farrar

Here's hoping that Ealing can make a statement versus Tigers this weekend.

The "rules" on player eligibility for these games have me confused. I have seen comments about having to have previously played in the competition and also, from Gloucester, that Charlie Atkinson is cup tied, having played for Leicester earlier in the pools.

Then I see Will Rigg on the bench for Exeter. Can't work out how both can be correct. Or perhaps Exeter are about to mess up and Gloucester can appeal even if they lose on the pitch. Just seems strange.

Agreed - Will Rigg on the bench for Exeter is very, very odd given that he was in another club in the same competition for the pool stages, which, at least to me, is much more concerning than someone who was on the same club but didn't feature due to world cup duty or similar.

Yes, Rigg did feature heavily in Cov's cup matches, so it does seem rather odd to me.

Standing tickets are now sold out for the match, with c.1000 seated tickets still available based on the Ealing ticketing site.

I've checked this with our team manager out of idle curiosity, and as long as they've played in the pool stages of the cup they can then play in the knockout phase, for any team.

The 'cup tied' element seems to have been removed altogether.

As a new signing, Will Rigg can only for Exeter in Semi final if

He played for Exeter in the pool stages - No
He was selected for a match that did not take place - N/A Exeter played Jersey
He was injured - No, he played for Cov
He is a front row player needed to prevent uncontested scrums - No, he is a centre
At the discretion of the tournament organiser - Must be this.

I recall Charlie Clare celebrated a significant birthday in Dublin after playing for Jersey in the B&I. The positions are Tight Head, Lock, Flanker & Hooker (Jersey occasionally produced a few decent forwards).

Tigers were under no illusions here, they knew a match sharp unit like Ealing would be a handful and so it appears to be, pleased the Tigers didn't over cook the side, but they wanted a win so picked a side that was up to doing the job and Ealing made it very difficult.
Good advert for the competition.

Two Ealing breakaways and  we managed to spoil the last pass for two open try opportunities. Then we give two interceptions for two Tigers tries.

It was such an enjoyable game but goes into the history books as a win to Tigers.

Great summary mate of a really good contest - both teams pushed it to the limit. I was proud of Ealing lads today.

He really is well past his sell-by date nowadays. He has turned from an insightful analyst into a tabloid one with his constant hysterical interjections. "He is very seriously injured" generally means the player recovers and carries on within minutes. "That's a definite red card" is usually followed by a review in which no foul play is the result. He adds very little to a game in my opinion.

He is also quite happy offering lightly veiled criticism based on inaccurate facts. On commentary he twice quoted an attendance figure of 2700. This I believe represents just the sold out standing tickets, to which must be added approx 1700 seating tickets (approx 500 unsold) to give a more accurate estimate of attendance.

Sadly there is a clear bias against anything not PRL, you don't want to read some of the carp on the Leicester Tigers official forum, there are some very embarrassing posters with attitudes reminiscent of Victorian Mill owners. It is all about them being entitled and looking down from their ivory towers being more than just disdainful about clubs "beneath them".
I have tried to mediate and offer the middle ground, I shall not being defending the fans on there on this forum anymore, the attitude some have is really disappointing, I remember when rugby fans used to claim the higher moral ground above the likes of soccer fans, they don't hold that ground anymore.

I took a look at the Tigers forum, and I have to say that it is a bit frustrating, but there was more sympathetic feedback than I had expected. That said, I was incredibly disappointed by the crowd. I do think it was under-reported (something Ealing has huge problems with), but definitely was not a sell-out, and certainly wasn't as well-attended as the Championship Cup final against London Irish in 2019. That said, that cup final was before the ring-fence went up - I believe that is directly depressing Championship crowds.

It certainly didn't help that the tickets were £40 for seats, and £10 for kids. I know half a dozen folks in my son's mini's group didn't go because the tickets were too dear.

The one thing that I would say to all of those tigers forum supporters, is that Ealing just built a £3.4m indoor training pitch, it is only about 200ms from the playing field. So whoever thinks there isn't investment in the facilities is wrong - Ealing would build stands tomorrow if they could get planning permission.

Sport reflects life sadly, keyboard warriors who speak(type) without putting their brain in gear first, they would not talk like the way they do on line, when in the club house face to face.
Rugby is still alive and kicking in the leagues below the Premiership, but I am more disillusioned each year by the professional game and those who follow it, orangesging their own players/coaches/management, demanding results and frankly out of touch with any sporting ethos, money really did change rugby union and for the most part, it wasn't for the better. They ridicule the Championship because they don't have large grounds and large crowds, but when I ask them what they thought of the game last season where Sale hosted Bristol in a premiership game and the crowd was below 4000, not the end of the world, but it illustrated that rugby is not a sport that draws huge crowds. no one answered my question as to how we address it.

Ealing lost it in the first 20 mins. They had massive scrum pressure and 2 penalties 5m from the line that they decided to go for 3 points. Ben Ward said he was pleased they took the 6 points! Jersey would have hammered home the advantage, got some yellows cards and 14 points on the board.

Instead De Wee (who would be in the bin every game in the Premiership unless he learnt) got the silly yellow and then a couple of mauls later by Tigers more than cancelled out the 6 points.

It was a good effort by Ealing but a game they will reflect on that could have been won.

Oh and about crowd size, yes it was disappointing but so are Newcastle and Sale.

Exeter were c. 2,500 in the Championship, now look at them.

However Ealing don’t need the crowd, they have what most Premiership teams have, a rich backer happy to lose a load of money and no back up plan if they were to disappear!

It's disappointing that so few turn up to support Ealing. What they've achieved over the last 10 years or so is impressive. OK, they have the committed backer who has spent a lot of money - but the squad they have and the facilities at Vallis Way are to be admired. Not sure why more punters don't come in - is it that there is simply too much opposition for fans with football and Premiership rugby nearby?
As others have said, that game was there to be won, small margins with two kicks hitting the posts and a couple of interceptions. So they are not far off being able to compete at the top level.  They should be given the chance if they win the league, but we all know that isn't going to happen.

I have no connection or special knowledge of Ealing but I suspect their back up plan if and when the worst were to happen would be to continue with the flourishing amateur club in a much improved and secured environment thanks to their rich backer.

Not sure why we have the over sensitive Ealing fans attacking me.

Is it true that Ealing had massive scrum ascendancy in the first 20 mins and didn’t make it count.  Is it true when De Wee got a silly yellow and Tigers got a couple of maul tries shortly after.

Ealing have an owner that gave £7,667,888 last year alone to fund the rugby operations, so the money is there.

If you take Bristol they have a turnover of £14m of which £5.4m is from league income and £4.8m from ticket sales.

Looking at Newcastle they have a turnover of £12.2m, £1.2m comes from tickets, £7.85m from RFU and Premier Rugby.

Sale only have income of £11.7m with £7.46 form the RFU and Premier rugby.

Add on the £7.7m the Ealing owner provides to either the £7.85 or £5.4m they are there. It just shows the crowd do not matter for Premiership Clubs and naturally they would be larger with more away supporters in the Premiership.

Upon further review, the crowd wasnt nearly as small as Austin Healey made out. The 2700 quoted was the sold out standing capacity. As Trailfinder said, there were likely only 500,  or so unsold seats, so attendance was likely c.4500 or so.
