It wasn't the Ealing backs making the difference but the Ealing forwards
dominated the lineouts and the scrum so Chinnor rarely saw the ball.
I'll post the usual match report tomorrow

The big question is what did poor Josh Hallett do to now make the team, they could have moved or dropped Strachan to make it 11.

Is there an Ampthill Rugby Club Championship squad?
Is 10 DR a record? Any Ampthill members here with an opinion other than it's in the regulations?

I played for Ampthill in the 1970s and early 1980s. It was a wonderful club. And since my retirement in 1985, and then moving away from the area, I watched its growth and rise through the leagues with great interest. Such a small club taking on the bigger boys one by one and beating them. I was delighted when they got into the Championship and hoped they would do really well. And they did.
However, this season especially, I get the feeling that something has gone wrong. It is just my perception as I have no idea of anything behind the scenes, and I cannot attend their matches as I now live too far away, so cannot pick up any vibes from the supporters. But I do not like the current total reliance of another club supplying players on a week in week out basis. Today's team, as an example, contains two debutants, both from Saracens. How can a team gain cohesion and togetherness if there are new players at every training session? They might do very well at Bedford today but it is not what I call an Ampthill team when it contains so many mercenaries. COVID upset everything and in addition we have a RFU boss man who takes home as much money every year as the entire pot handed out to all the Championship clubs put together. I genuinely fear for the future of this great game outside the Premiership which is why today I will be attending the National League 2 game between Wharfedale and Otley. The standard of play will be good, the crowd will make their presence felt, and the ground is picturesque. And the squads will consist of home grown talent who play for the club week in and week out. |

Cherub,
The gossip locally is that Lavery is stopping his backing of the club. Obviously it's a very wealthy town so someone else might fill that gap. For mini and junior rugby Ampthill remains massive around here, generally running two sides at every age group. However the challenge will always be that most local rugby fans will go and watch Bedford and Saints before thinking about paying to go to Ampthill.

I'm probably wrong but I seem to recall there being a limit on how many Dr players can be in the starting 15, which I think is 10.

A really nice write up. The only thing that I would say is that Matt Cornish is former London Irish, but originally Trailfinders Academy, who earned over 50 caps for the first team before moving to Irish, then coming back when they went bust.

My understanding there is no official regulation in place, however a gentlemans agreement was made between all clubs not to include more than 6 in a match day squad. This will become a regulation next season I believe. I think three clubs were unable to agree to the gentlemans agreement.

I presume London Scottish and Ampthill are two of the suspects here, but who is the third 'ungentlemanly' club with regards to this matter, Hartpury? I think it's all been said before, but so long as the rules (or lack of) allow for it, there will continue to be Harlequins, Saracens and Gloucester (?) 2nd teams turning out each weekend. As mentioned previously, the logic of it all escapes me and I'm surprised the supporters at these clubs tolerate it.
