Did anyone read McGeechan’s view on the benefits of no relegation from the Premiership? It was in the Telegraph today:

Positive trend of the season: The emergence of youth

Adam Radwan, Tommy Freeman, Louis Lynagh, Alfie Barbeary, Raffi Quirke, Henry Arundell... I could easily go on. There are so many exciting young players coming through. There are a few reasons for that; the decision to dispense with relegation for a couple of seasons has emboldened coaches….”

Hmmm...did he perhaps miss that Radwan's breakout season came in the Championship?

That was always touted as one of the potential benefits of ring-fencing, so it's an easy line to fall back on.  Most of those players named actually broke-through before this season, and I'm fairly sure that young players have been fast-tracked into the England team by the press since the dawn of the professional era.

How is it emboldening coaches? No relegation = no incentive to fight or innovate.

Lynagh played in last season's final. I am n ot sure Quins have felt a lot of relegation pressure, more like pressure to retain a trophy.

The party line is that no relegation means no risk, therefore coaches can throw untried players in at the deep end with no consequence.

Radwan's breakthrough came in Nat 1 with DMP . . after Newcastle had lost interest in him!

That's right Kimbo, the clubs in leagues below the Prem' have been doing this for decades, sometimes it's the only option and often pays off Smile
