Reading on the Nat 1 week 2 thread championship clubs have agreed a reduction in DR/loan numbers.
"Championship clubs are imposing limit of 6 on DRs/loanees this season, I believe. It was 13 last season, with large numbers of Prem players regularly imposed appearing in LS colours, often in Ampthill with Bedford Blues/Saints link also worrying. " Copied from the thread. Can anyone in the know confirm if this is true or not

A lot depends on the circumstances, giving U18's or U20's experience at this level of adult rugby is good for the game surely? Players going to Championship sides has happened for decades, I remember Tom Varndell being loaned to Bedford to get his try scoring mojo back. Tom Youngs went to Nottingham when he converted form centre to hooker are two I remember. Now I agree eight does seem a tad over the top, it does the club fielding that many loaned players no good at all, I think it can put a club in a position they cannot sustain, if club players are injured and loaned players taking their place is different to loan players blocking club players.

No idea where that information has come from. I do not believe there has been any change to the regulations since last year.
Bedford very rarely, if ever, had more than 2 or 3 saints players in the squads last year. They were usually bench cover due to injuries, apart from Henry Pollock getting a bit of a run. We were heavily reliant on them during Covid and the subsequent season to survive, but ran a larger core squad last year with the same squad size this year. I know at times Ampthill had as many as 12 Saracens players in their matchday 23 last year. I’m not sure on the Scottish/Quins numbers so can’t comment on that situation. But I do agree there is a balance to be had and over half your matchday squad is too many. A Saracens stacked Ampthill team beat Ealing, which could’ve had a huge influence on the final standings. There is definitely some benefit to the English game as a whole in giving promising youngsters game time. At Bedford, we also often end up signing some of the players permanently that get released by saints that have featured for us. I also think it is not viable for most championship sides to have minimum 3x contracted players in specialist positions (front row, scrum half) so it is just sensible to cover these spots with DRs in case of injury.

I've only got into rugby over the last couple of years but I find the whole structure of domestic rugby bizarre.
The domestic game seems to be totally focused on putting all the resources into the hands of a few clubs. Even in the prem you have clubs going bust regularly and Newcastle unable to even win a game. With championship teams like Ampthill and London Scottish effectively being B teams for Saracens and Harlequins and no promotion there's just a status quo and smaller clubs have little chance of progression. Imo there should be a cap of maybe 3/4 loans allowed to a club. Limit the amount of players the prem clubs are allowed to have and hopefully other clubs will have more of a chance of competing with them in future (if they're ever allowed to get promoted!)

Should a proper Premiership "A" league be re-instated, then there will be less loaning of players, the problem for English rugby is there are players not getting any game time, that is stopping players progression, which is not good for the game in the country.

Good morning And there’s the rub. If they are not getting regular game time, sadly and I’m being brutal here they are not good enough at that time or there are other factors work/home life whatever that is effecting thier game. If they actually dropped down a level to maybe reset or find thier level as a club signing then this can only enrich the game at all levels but more importantly the player to get regular and consistent game time. We are supposed to be in a competitive league tier structure (sic), ring fencing either competition, aspiration or players has no place or benefit in either case, to the cause and development of rugby. In my very humble opinion. Enjoy your Sunday All the best ST.

Most of the Leicester and Northampton players out on loan are under 21 years of age, they are apprentices, at Leicester they go to college in the day, train with the Tigers or with the club they are loaned to. An example Leicester Lions had two dual registered players in their squad this weekend, both young players on the rise in their careers. Some players are let go by the Premiership academies and do indeed sign for clubs at a lower lever, Leicester Lions had Oli Crane on DR last season, he was let go by the Tigers academy and he has now signed as a Lions player.
