I notice that in the main, we get the same pool of officials at Cov (Gregory Garner crops up a lot), whereas some of the others come nowhere near us (I dont blame them). Are they allocated to matches based on geography?

This Greg Garner is from Leicestershire, but Nigel Carrick travels from Suffolk and our referee from Surrey, so not entirely based on geography. I can tell you from personal experience that the RFU referee department doesn't have a map of Great Britain to check such things.

Ealing Trailfinders team to play Yorkshire Carnegie on Sunday 10th November at Emerald Headingley Stadium: Not sure what to think of this lineup. I really dislike David Johnston at fullback. He has ghosted a lot of tackles at 13, so at 15 with him on an island...not sure. Excited to see Elijah Niko, who looks like a unit, but most excited to see Lewis Jones at 13. Jones is an excellent servant, and has been solid for years. Finally, I like Durutalo at 7. Jordy Reid has looked a bit off-form to me, with his jackalling having fallen off, and his running has often seemed to involve just diving at the ground. Hopefully Durutalo's 7s legacy will help bring the off-loading game back to life. 15 David Johnston 14 Elijah Niko 13 Lewis Jones 12 Harry Sloan 11 Reon Joseph 10 Craig Willis 9 Nathan Fowles 1 Will Davis 2 Matt Cornish 3 Craig Trenier 4 Ben West 5 Harry Casson 6 Kieran Murphy 7 Andrew Durutalo 8 Rayn Smid © Replacements: 16 Alun Walker 17 Jake Ellwood 18 George Davis 19 Sam Dickinson 20 Jordy Reid 21 Oli Robinson 22 Craig Hampson 23 Tommy Bell |

Gerg,
Although it’s early days it appears from afar that Ealing haven’t hit their straps yet. I’m guessing that this has surprised a few people but would you agree and has it come as a surprise to you (or other Ealing posters)? |

I don’t know anything about Ealing’s squad, hence my question. It was more of a general question rather than asking for views on individual players. |

I am massively surprised. They had seemingly good recruitment, low squad turnover, and a huge amount of training time. I expected them to hit the ground running and dominate. Instead, players have underperformed, and some have been left out of the squad without reason. |

I’m sure there are reasons gerg_561. Just reasons that you and the rest of the supporters haven’t been told, so that other clubs can’t plan for them until the simultaneous announcements at noon on Friday. The same applies everywhere. At Coventry we tend to be told who is out injured for over a month, and certainly who is out for over two, but it was only announced today that one player was back in training who played last week. |

Ealing's early league form has been a big surprise for pretty much everyone. The settled squad after a tumultuous start to last season plus finishing 2nd, 2nd, 3rd over the past 3 seasons suggested that we might be able to go one better this year. The fact we fell over at the first hurdle against Pirates and then stumbled again at home to Coventry suggests something is remiss (not taking anything away from those two excellent sides).
I have concern regarding selection and squad rotation, it appears that we stick with the same team until there's a bad performance then we switch half the team, where it remains settled until the next bad performance. Not sure that is the best way to manage a squad where most players feel they should be starting each week. Especially in the 9, 10, 15 positions. I was also concerned to hear Jimmy Lowe's was mouthing off during the Pirates game, not a good sign imo. |

Last year I would have said that the squad selection was almost 100% Ben Ward. He wasn't perfect, but he got better as the year went on. I don't know what influence Jimmy Lowe is having, but results say nothing good. I agree 100% with Trailfinder's analysis in terms of the strange approach to selection, with the added proviso that Ben Ward seems fascinated with David Johnston despite all indications that he is a net negative in almost every game due to poor tackling and lack of pace. The other strange thing this year is that they don't seem to be able to land on 9/10 pairings, which is disrupting the entire attack. Once again, almost an embarrassment of riches (for the Championship) seems to be causing Ealing to play as less than the sum of its parts.
